SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
IT’S THAT UPGRADE TIME!
THE SYNAPSE CIRCUIT GOLDEN RULES

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s great to see you as always! Yes, indeed! I hope the weather has been treating you well as it has me here in bonnie London, UK!

Yes, it’s that upgrade time of the year... Okay, okay... It’s upgrade season all year round! Anyhoo, if it just so happens that you are due for an upgrade and unsure about where to go next then this is article is for you! Read on!

#Upgrade #Upgrading #Samsung #GalaxyS6Edge #GalaxyS6 #MotoG4G #Nexus6 #HuaweiAscendG7

THE SYNAPSE CIRCUIT HARD & FAST SET OF GOLDEN RULES UPON UPGRADING
Upgrading can be very, very stressful as you want to make the best possible choice for your money. Your friends will tell you this with the greatest of enthusiasm but what is good for your friends may not be necessarily good for your purposes – we’ll come to your purposes in due course... Here’s a set of Synapse Circuit Golden Rules upon upgrading...

1. Always look for the best deals with a network / carrier. The best way to ascertain whether or not you are getting a good deal is to look at the same make and model of any handset that you are interested in and see what all the networks are charging on a 24 month contract basis. Look at the inexpensive handsets on offer right up to the most costly; doing this should make you familiar with the differential factors that affect the price:-

The 64-bit Octocore processor is the highest standard on Android and iPhones these days followed by Quadcore and then dualcore and they are priced accordingly. Not all 64-bit smartphones are the same, so if you see one that costs £199 it may not be as powerful and as fast as one costing £750.

Then there is the camera; if the picture and video quality is of great importance to you then you can expect to pay for it. These days it’s the Android handsets that contain cameras with the largest megapixels (MP); from 13MP to 20MP. At the moment the iPhone has kept the camera at 8MP.

RAM is a very important factor. These days the premium Android handsets have a minimum of 2GB to 4GB of RAM. RAM helps to make interacting with the interface effortless thus avoiding slowdowns and stuttering = “lag”. RAM will also allow you to multitask between several different applications opened at once on your phone i.e. with enough RAM you should be able to go from one memory intensive app to another and another and another without the phone slowing down or stuttering the applications. Again, not all phones are made equally – not even at the top of the range!

Internal Storage is very important for not only the operating system i.e. Android, iOS (iPhone & iPad) and Windows it also stores your downloaded apps from respective app stores, photos, videos, sounds and downloads (pictures, video, PDF, sound and document file from other sources like Facebook, web pages and so on). These days the trend for the high premium end of Android phones is to start with 32GB of internal storage. Many manufacturers still have a 16GB minimum standard. The iPhone and some Android manufacturers have the following options for internal storage: 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB of internal storage. Naturally, the larger the internal storage capacity the higher the cost! Lately Samsung has jettisoned the 16GB standard for 32GB on its flagship premium handsets.

I think that the iPhone is ridiculous for the asking price to have 16GB as standard.

External Storage can be an important factor if you take a lot of pictures and videos. Then there’s storing files that you have downloaded from the Net! External storage options come in the form of a microSD card. Some manufacturers do not provide the option for a microSD card such as Apple and the iPhone and those that do tend to specify a capacity i.e. some allow up to 32, 64 and 128 GB. Usually the more expensive the handset allows for the highest microSD card capacity. Not having access to an external storage microSD card may be a deal breaker for you. But 32GB isn’t bad, plus there is a solution that is known as USB-On-The-Go which is basically a USB stick with a micro USB connector. Most Android phones will make use of USB-On-The-Go.

Screen Sizes & Resolution can also affect the cost of a handset. These days the typical screen for a handset starts out at 4.7 up to a little over 6 inches. 6 inch phones are known as phablets (phone meets tablet). Android phablets does not necessarily mean that you can negate an Android tablet as there are tablet specific applications that you will not get on the 6” handset.

Most Android phones can have a High Definition (HD) resolution from 720 x 1280 to full HD 1080p and Quad HD which is 1440 x 2560 also known as 2K. Another important factor of the screen is the pixel per inch = ppi. Currently, the highest ppi rating on a phone 577 on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge! The higher the pixels per inch the less you’ll be able to make out the little dots (pixels) that make up what you see on a screen. Let’s get it straight right now; the iPhone retina screen is dead!

It’s not as complicated as it may first appear but get to know the individual components of a smartphone to understand what it is you are paying for. Don’t think that that an inexpensive handset is going to be the equivalent of the top of the range if that’s what you are looking for. Otherwise budget handset can be a good thing!

You will find all the important attributes of a smartphone within the “specifications” section if you are looking online.

2. Don’t feel that you have to be loyal to a network you’ve stayed with for ex-amount of years! Get the best deal. If you want to change your network / carrier then don’t let the person at the other end of the phone change your mind. Again, look at the amount of data (Internet usage), calls and texts you are paying for and compare with other networks / carriers and the kind of phone you could have (rule number 1).

3. Make sure that when you cancel a contract you do it over the phone! Do not go into a store and cancel because the sales assistants will seldom tell you that you must cancel with Customer Services over the phone. And be sure to stop the direct debit on the same day that you cancel because the chances are the network you are with will take it regardless! I had that problem with Virgin Mobile. Never again will I take out any form of contact with Virgin Mobile.

4. It’s always a good idea to pop into a store to check out the latest handsets but do not feel under any pressure whatsoever when a sales assistant tries to use sales selling techniques on you. Just laugh at them! Most of the time these sales people are confidence tricksters; the trick, if you don’t know, is for the sales assistants to get the customer to keep saying “yes”. No! Do not fall for it. See what happened when I went with a friendto check out the possibility of a new handset (and to get a free power bar)with the network EE. Remember: There is a reason why the sales assistant is called precisely that and not Customer Assistant. All these tricksters want to do is guide your money into the cash register. It’s sad but true!

5. If you are going to pay more than £40 each month for a top notch phone then you better had get an unlimited something i.e. data (Internet usage), voice and / or texts.

6. Haggle! It’s worth trying to see what a network will offer to keep your custom or to have it. “What are you going to offer me to stay?” “I am thinking of leaving my current network because I am paying too much for such a small Internet data allowance... What can you offer me as a new customer?” If you decide to go with Three or Tesco mobile mention my name, Blue Gene / Synapse Circuit, and see if you can get a discount. “My friend, Blue Gene, says that you could do me a good deal as he has contracts with you...” I can’t guarantee anything but it is worth a try! Three and Tesco can be quite good by the way of offering an incentive. I have found that EE, Virgin and O2 aren’t flexible at all.

PURCHASING OUTRIGHT
Because the standard of Android handsets are increasingly high it means that what was once considered high-end is now available at a mid-range price. Such handsets are affordable and that means you can take out a SIM only contract that should give you more for your money!

Above: The Motorola super-budget smartphone, Moto G

I would advice to stick to known brands like Motorola and Samsung. I will give you a wholehearted recommendation to purchase outright and that is the Motorola Moto G 4G model. It features a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, a 5” 720 x 1280 HD screen resolution with a 294 ppi rating, 8MP main camera that can record HD video up to 1280 x 720p, 8GB of internal storage, up to 32GB of microSD storage and the latest Android operating system which is version 5, codenamed Lollipop. Sure, the internal storage isn’t that great at 8GB but that is quite enough for most of – if not all – social networking apps like Facebook, G+, Instagram and so on plus a good amount of those free video / voice calling apps like WhatApp, LINE, Viber, Tango, etc. Besides, how many of those calling apps do you need? I have the 3G version and I can tell you that I’ve got a load of apps on it with 1.96GB to spare!

If you are able to purchase a handset outright for around £150 - £200 it will save you a bit of cash with a SIM only deal. Look for a good deal that offers unlimited Internet data as you can feel free to use those free video, voice, text and multimedia messaging apps without worrying that you have gone past your limit thus incurring extra charges!

Above: The brilliant Huawei (wha way) Ascend G7

The second handset that I will recommend checking out is the Huawei Ascend G7 for £199.95 you get a 5.5” 720 x 1280 pixels with a 267 ppi pixel density rating, quad-core 1.2 GHz, 16GB internal memory, 2GB RAM, 4G, and a potentially good 13MP camera that can record full HD video at 1920 x 1080p!

If I can find some other good bargains I will let you know! I try to review as many different handsets as I can!

TIP: Synapse Circuit Readers UK, watch out for a good deal with TalkTalk. I spoke with a representative on the street who stated that there is a possibility of an unlimited everything SIM only deal for £20! Hopefully this possibility turns out to be a reality!

LAST YEAR’S MODEL
If you are not the type of person that feels the need to get the very latest model then I would recommend that Samsung Galaxy S5 as it comes with a great 16MP camera and the LG G3 which has a 13MP!

Above: The Galaxy S5 launch. The Galaxy S5 is a great handset and very underrated. If someone gave me a free iPhone 6 or 6 Plus I would trade it in for the Galaxy S5. You know I would!

On the Three network you can get the Samsung Galaxy S5 with unlimited Internet data, texts and 600 voice minutes for £37 with an upfront cost of £9!

Sticking with Three you can get everything unlimited for £40 and no upfront cost!

Above: The stunning LG G3

Again, with Three the LG G3 is everything unlimited (Internet, calls and texts) for a brilliant £36! No upfront cost!

Above: The gorgeous Google / Motorola Nexus 6

You can’t really go wrong with those two handset mentioned above. I could also recommend the wonderful Google / Motorola Nexus 6 at £35 per month with Tesco mobile but you get 2GB of Internet data, 3000 minutes of talk time and 5000 texts. Try and haggle for 3GB of data for £35!

iPHONE?
I would advise anyone thinking of upgrading from an older iPhone model to the latest iPhone 6 & 6 Plus to forget it as owners of these models are getting rid of them in computer exchange shops around London! Why? In a nutshell Apple have taken the equivalent of the Robin Reliant, stuffed a V12 (a 64-bit processor) engine in it and given it a new shell. You would be paying good, good hard earned money for what I consider to be a “hacked” job. Apple is not a company of engineers nor is it a manufacturer. The iPhone is comprised of Frankenstein bits from other manufacturers such as Samsung! Apparently, Samsung is going to help Apple develop a decent screen for future iPhones. 200 Samsung employees are said to be tasked with the job of developing a new iPhone screen!

The iOS operating system seems half baked as it is unable to make proper use of full 1080p HD let alone Quad HD at 2560p! As for the apps? The Google Play Store have caught up with quality apps for the Android operating system for both handsets and tablets. The iPhone is out of date in its current state.

Above: More and more iPhone 6 & 6 Plus handsets are being traded in for better Android handsets.

Here’s proof that people are trading in the latest iPhone models (presumably for the latest Android handsets). iPhone6 / 6 Plus gets CEX’D up!

HIGH END
At the moment I can only recommend the following:-

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the standard Galaxy S6 – the cameras should be the same! I have been taking the time to review it of late and I am enjoying it thus so far. I was hoping to bring you the last instalment of the review but I had such a busy day that I will deliver it to you later on today, 23rd April 2015. Thank you for your patience.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4; I reviewed it last year and it packs an almighty punch! Here’s the review: Synapse Circuit Galaxy Note 4 Review

I hope to bring you more reviews soon! I would like to get a hold of the LG G4, HTC One M9 and the Sony Z4 to name a few! Standby!

CONCLUSION
You should be able to look at what all the networks / carriers are offering to decide what’s the best option for you! I have gone with Three and Tesco Mobile as they had the best deals on the handsets that I were interested into at the time. Also I test many phones – not as many as I would like – so I have a bunch of SIM only contracts should I get the latest handsets to review!

I found Virgin Mobile to be conniving and troublesome. EE prices are way too much for what they are offering. O2 may be in the process of being bought out by Three and I can’t say that I like what it has to offer. And TalkTalk could be offering some good prices on SIM only contracts – especially if you have a broadband service with them!

I hope that you have found this article useful! If you have any questions you should know you can reach me through G+. And some of you know my Facebook profile. Look forward to chatting with you!

ZOOMR SELF-DESTRUCTING IMAGES COMPLETE ANONYMITY SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
NEWS:
NEW APP FOR iPHONE: ZOOMR AVAILABLE ON APPSTORE, WINNING AUDIENCES WITH SELF-DESTRUCTING IMAGES, CHATS AND COMPLETE ANONYMITY

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope that you are well! It is always great to see you! Well, this is the last article for this session! I am so glad that you are enjoying my work!

Here’s some great news for iPhone users!

#iPhone #Zoomr #SelfDestruct #Privacy

MISSION POSSIBLE
The Zoomr App for iPhone lets you post self-destructing photos, comment and rate selfies of other users, chat in private – all with full anonymity and confidence that all content will be gone in 2 days.

Sydney, Australia –March 10th, 2015 - A free app for iPhone, Zoomr has just been released on AppStore and is quickly gaining an audience. The main features offered in the app are complete anonymity and self-destructing posts, comments and chats. Although some features are similar to popular apps like Whisper or Snapchat, Zoomr promises extended functionality that should be interesting to a broader audience.

“There are many fun ways to use the app. For instance, you can gather opinion on your new hairstyle, outfit, accessories and such by posting a selfie for everyone to see,” says Anna Clark of Zoomr. “You can be sure the anonymous feedback will be genuine, unlike what you’d hear from your friends who may want to spare your feelings. Knowing what’s hot and what’s not can help your self-confidence and make you the star of a party or social gathering. Likewise, you could get comments on home design ideas, hobbies or crafts, and pretty much anything you may want independent opinion on. The app’s purpose is very versatile!”

Zoomr lets a person create an absolutely anonymous profile that is linked to the user’s iPhone and can’t be accessed from any other device. Starting with the app takes seconds, as it automatically suggests a username and profile picture. Users can post photos that can be viewed, commented and rated by everyone. Posts can be sorted for viewing by popularity, timestamp or location. Private chats let users make new friends and set up IRL meets.

The main idea of the app is that all posts, comments and chats are erased in 48 hours, which helps keep content from spreading online and helps users remain anonymous. When someone wants to keep certain posts or comments, they can take screenshots to save on their device for keeping.

Company Background:
Zoomr is an Australian startup that began as a project within a well-known publisher of PC optimization software for Microsoft Windows®. A team of 6 driven individuals had been working on the Zoomr app for iPhones since September of 2014 and finally launched it this February.  Another successful iOS app project by the Sydney-based Zoomr team is ShutterBee – a photo-sharing and trip-logging app for travelers. The Zoomr app is available for free from the Apple AppStore. More information on the app can be found at www.zoomr.com.

iPHONE SALES FABRICATIONS

Above: Here is an assortment of iPhone handsets that include: 5C, a few iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models. Apple has kept a tight lid on the sales of the 5C and I suspect that either the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus isn't doing so well in Europe. The markup on the iPhone is high and therefore profit is assured.
Do you think that Apple exaggerates its iPhone sales to give the impression that there is such a high demand? I'd like to see the real sales figures.

The tech related media have it mind that iPhone sales have outsold Android in the fall of 2014 yet Android still dominates by far. If anything Android sales have slowed with the anticipation of 64-bit handsets this year. All eyes are upon the Samsung Galaxy S6 to restore order to the Android marketplace.

Thank you for reading Synapse Circuit.

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT APPLE TALK FALLIBLE

How can you not love Bender? Bring back Futurama!
What a hoot!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE TALK 10:
APPLE...
...
CRUMBLE!

Or should that be ‘bent’? Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? I hope that you are tip top and that your projects are going exceptionally well! What? You mean to tell me that you don’t have a project? With this beautiful tech at your disposal you mean to tell me that you aren’t doing anything with it? Well,
I guess I ought to ramp up the reviews! Believe me... ...they are coming!

I think it’s pretty safe to state that Apple is going through a tough time of late. Dare I say that things will pick up; lessons should have been learned – we can only hope so! Whether you like it or not I have exposed Apple and its freaky hypnotic PR machine that includes the collection of tech media around the world pretending to be independent both on and offline i.e. TV magazine-like programmes that places Apple on top of the competition! Paper magazines geared towards general technology and specifically mobile devices have done exactly the same thing: placing Apple product on top! I had noticed something very fishy from the Samsung Galaxy S2 and that made me look into what was going on... I reckon I opened up the eyes of others and also confirmed what others had started to notice too!

I am one of the few independent writers that clocks when the wheels fall off that juggernaut of that Apple bus and here I am doing it again!

#Apple #Samsung #Google #SteveJobs #TimCook #iPhone6 #iPhone6Phablet #iPhone6Plus #AppleWatch #GalaxyNote4 #GalaxyAlpha #GalaxyNoteEdge

FALLIBLE!
I think what has happened to Apple is a good thing! Once again, I find myself using the analogy of the Karate Kid movies whereby that awful annoying blonde kid is Apple and the Karate Kid is the competition! Hahaha! It’s true! The lengths that Apple will go to ensure the world thinks,”iSomething” is scarily astounding! Apple loves to divide and conquer! “I’m and Apple...” “And... ...I’m a PC...”

“We’ve been robbed! Someone has come into our house and stolen our technology!! Watch out for inferior copies of our products!!!”

“If someone does everything then what is left for us to do? Feel sorry for us and buy our products...”

“Er... Uhm... We’ve done a phablet! Whoohoo! It’s not quite as good as the originators but at least now you have a landscape mode! That it comes from us, the 6 Plus, you should buy it! Yay!”

You know what they say about imitation... Ha ha!

It is said that under Jobs ‘Bendgate’ wouldn’t have happened but I am not so sure... A great possibility is that Apple would have eventually become bankrupt through losing patent battles outside the USA! They did use Obama to overturn a vital Samsung victory! Apple wouldn’t have been in any position to release a handset beyond 5S! And still to this day there is no confirmation that 5C was a success. I predicted that both the 5S and 5C weren’t going to be the greatest sellers of that time.

Or it could be that Jobs would have been ousted yet again from his own company in order to save it from his death dive with Google in his jaws. Jobs or not it was clear then and now that Apple has to up its game big time – literally! In order to maintain some credibility the tech media has had to admit to Apple being way behind Android handsets but as always many find a way to have the iPhone and iPad edge out a little. This fools nobody but iDevice fanatics.

I don’t know about you but I started to clock a pattern that occurs before and after an Apple keynote! Let me show – if you haven’t seen it...

BEFORE...
In the run up to the next iPhone we get to see a bunch of “leaked” images that factory workers allegedly “sneaked out”. Apple can’t say outright that it, in this recent case, is going to release a bigger handset simply because it looks like defeat (because it is). As a result the constant “leaks” starts to feed the collective populous mind. It works two ways:-

A: The iPhone fan will get it into his / her head that, despite Apple’s scientific research and painful design ethos, what they really wanted was a bigger handset. That’s right, iPhone fan; it’s YOU that’s driving Apple against its principles! But, obviously, it’s really Apple!

B: Non-iPhone users will be expecting to see a larger iPhone – in this case two – and it won’t come as a surprise.

Now that you are thinking in the “right” direction you will see the usual suspects holding physical parts of the iPhone and blogging / vlogging about them... “If this... If that...” These blogger / vloggers may or may not realize that they are part of the PR machine ramping expectations, excitement and curiosity. These tech bloggers / vloggers are help to keep you guessing. Whether you’re a fan or not it becomes a part of your consciousness.

DURING...
During the keynote the expectations reaches a fever pitch so much so that some of us momentarily forget about the competition (as this is the purpose) and focus upon the wonderful gifts that Cook is about to bestow... This is how Cook is able to make the new products seem as the inventions of Apple when in fact they are anything but. We know this. We also know that when Apple reveals a new iPhone or phones they’ll be in the shops soon after!

Oh, one more thing... The reveal of another device; I thought it was going to be either a smartwatch or iPad or both! I feel that because the iPhone is seriously lagging behind Android handsets Cook and co quickly defocuses onto something else. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a “free” U2 album and the Apple Watch – complete with the “Digital Crown”. And it gets worse... ...the Apple Watch is coming sometime next year. How many smartwatches have Samsung released in a year?

AFTER...
We get to see a standard aftermath...

1. News of people queuing up outside Apple stores for days when they don’t have to. The only thing different about the queue reports this time around are that some of the people queuing are looking to sell their places to the real fanatics!

2. News of record sales... Every time there is news of record sales and then later on we see a different result.

3. Odd headlines to state that a record number of seemingly only Samsung trade-ins and that many Android folk are jumping ship! Get onboard before you look silly! Ha ha! But it turns out that the buyers are repeat customers of Apple. I don’t think repeat customers aren’t enough hence the larger iPhone handsets to make some more gains. If Android has over 80% of the world market then where does it leave Apple? It is clear that Apple needs some more sales!

GOSH! THAT’S NUFF GLITCHES!

Putting such a large phone in your pocket is assking for trouble!

I can only imagine a rabid Tim Cook cursing like it’s going out of fashion over “bendgate”. Could this derail further sales? If the prices for these new fangled iPhones aren’t off-putting then perhaps the fragility of the products will; however it appears – through independent testing – the standard iPhone 6 isn’t so easy to bend.

A bizarre thought entered my head... Could it be that the fragility of the 6 Plus was designed as a get out of failure clause? I mean if it turns out that the iPhone user prefers the standard over the Plus Apple could say that the “bendgate” scare was a major cause (for disappointing sales). Maybe the newly acquired designer can redesign the iPhone for today’s market as Android keeps blazing the trail for innovation. Once upon a time Cook would claim “fragmentation” regarding those “other guys” when it is apparent that iOS has scaling issues when it comes to the development for apps; this is why the standard iPhone has an odd resolution: 750 x 1334 pixels. It seems as though iOS developers have their work cut out to reach Android app scaling standards so that one day iPhone users will enjoy QHD screens!

Then there are issues with iOS 8! To be honest whenever there’s an operating system upgrade there are opportunities for bugs but considering Apple have only a few handsets to take care of that upgrading iOS should be a chinch! Android is a huge contrast with regards to the sheer number of handsets it has to take care of! Is it any wonder that Google takes its time with Android updates?

HUMBLE (APPLE) PIE

Ouch! That's gotta hurt!

As I was saying... I think these unfortunate occurrences can be good for Apple as I would imagine that Cook and co can relax and not have to worry about having to be this infallible machine. Humans are behind Apple and humans can make mistakes. However, it’s how the mistakes are dealt with that makes all the difference. Apple has, in the past, used various techniques to deflect the blame when things have gone wrong. You can fool some of the people some of the time...

Apple has a great opportunity to turn things around! There’s nothing like admitting fault and refocusing. You know for yourself that when someone can’t admit to being at fault that you can’t trust he / she won’t make the same mistake(s) again.

I would love to see Apple making good product that don’t need the smoke ‘n’ mirrors nonsense. I would also like to see them making an effort to be more like Google in the way they create products across the mobile device platforms. Apple Pay is just a step backwards for NFC payments that we’ll stick to using our credit / debit cards. C’mon, Apple! Show us some of that gigantic big, big love!

That’s something to think about!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT APPLE TALK THE FALLOUT 2

Above: The iPhone 6C - not!
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE TALK:
THE FALLOUT 2

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers. How are you? How was your day? Ready for the Bank Holiday Carnival Festivities? Heck! I can’t handle the crowds... If you are still going through your day I hope it’ll finish up on a good Note 4 (hee hee hee) and that you will have a relaxed evening!

Apple Talk Fallout is what usually comes after an Apple Talk article; I tell you I get some interesting to downright mad responses from mainly iPhone users when their beloved handset and iPad gets criticism.

#Apple #Samsung #Google #SteveJobs #TimCook #iPhone6 #iPhone6Phablet #iPhone6L #GalaxyNote4 #GalaxyAlpha #Premium #Nexus6 #AndroidL #AndroidLemonMeringuePie

THEY REALLY BELIEVE
THAT IT’S PREMIUM...
Gosh! I am amazed by this discovery: iPhone / iPad users really think that their handset is a “premium” one! Wow! Initially I was asking about the notion of “premium materials” that make up the iPhone / iPad and the fact that the metal is not as durable as plastic. One guy admitted that he dropped his iPad and it now has a dent in it; typically he sidestepped the issue of vulnerability...

Another guy said something along the lines of the iPhone / iPad being likened to a Rolls Royce and that it may “...not be practical for driving the kids around in the back...” However, the adverts have it that the iPhone / iPad can enable children to be creative... I then stated that the top of the range Android handset can be likened to a Ferrari or Lamborghini super-sports cars and Mr. Rolls Royce was not happy about that analogy and had it in his mind that I was belittling the Apple mobile devices. Nothing of the sort!

What I meant by using the Ferrari as an analogy to describe the top of the range Android handset is that it is made from non-metallic materials that such as plastic that makes the Android handset very practical for everyday use! The Ferrari is made from carbon fibre in contrast to the (as far as I know) metal that makes up the Rolls Royce. So, therefore I conclude that many iPhone / iPad users believe that the impractical materials that have gone in to it / them is money well spent. Cool – if that’s what they are happy with.

The first guy who skipped the issue of vulnerability launched into a massive missive about the “premium service and functionality” that he gets with his iDevices. He also mentions that he can move seamlessly – I am paraphrasing – from the iPhone / iPad to the Mac computer. Well, I have news for you mister...

PREMIUM ANDROID?
Another guy just lost it when I stated that, according to analysts, Android have sold over 1 billion handsets compared to 150 million iPhone units. He said something along the lines of, “You can’t compare 1 billion Android handsets to the iPhone...” and... “...iOS and Android would have been a better comparison, blah, blah, blah...” further still... “You (I) should compare the iPhone to a premium Android handset...” Yawn! Why am I being so blasé? I will tell you if you haven’t figured it out already...

The notion of the “premium” Android, from my observations, pertains more to the specifications and – at a stretch – functionality. To the guy that suggested that I should compare the iPhone to a specific Android equivalent... How about the cheapest quad-core Android handset from Google Motorola? Look...

C’mon... ...you’re not going make me write out the spec of the iPhone 5S are you? What are you people like? Lol! Incidentally the Motorola G 4G has a variation known as the Ferrari edition. Hee hee... Put that in your pipe!

iPhone 5S

FEATURES
OS: iOS 7, upgradable to iOS 7.1.2, planned upgrade to iOS 8
Chipset: Apple A7
CPU: Dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone (ARM v8-based)
GPU: PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics)

The spec is similar but obviously not the same... A main difference is beyond the CPU and operating system is the camera; the camera on the iPhone features an 8MP sensor to the Moto G 5MP that only manages HD video at 720p! Oh, the screen size of the Moto G is bigger by half an inch with a 326ppi pixel density to the iPhone 5S 4” screen with the same pixel density. I almost forgot that the Moto G storage is expandable via microSD whereas the iPhone 5S has fixed storage options starting at 16GB! Now let’s look at the prices of these babies!

Moto G 8GB 4G, £150 vs. iPhone 5S 16GB 4G, £540
Me? I have come to the realization that many Android handsets from £150 to £250 are premium! And dare I say it, the prices are set to fall slightly come 2015 due to the influx of Chinese manufacturers. LG have already announced its new budget L series and the L Bello model boasts a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 5” 196ppi pixel density and an 8MP camera! Not bad, huh? I wonder how much it will retail at... Under £140?

Make no mistake, many Android handsets are indeed premium and that’s how it is able to dominate and sell over 1 billion units! Handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S & Note; HTC One M8 and LG G3 are what I would call superphones in that they go all out to give the consumer so much more: DTP quality pictures for printing resulting from great cameras (aside from the HTC One M8 – the pictures are ok but not of the same quality as the Galaxy S, Note and G3! Video recording at 4K (again, with the exception of the One M8) and very useful interface features! Maybe the superphone is a niche market as not everybody needs such hardcore tech! Me? I love all that tech! I want as much tech as possible squeezed into my superphone! Have you seen the Vin Diesel 'XXX' movie and the bit where he tells an uber-nerd technician to, "Put all that (tech and weapons) in there (pointing to a Mustang car - I think)..." That's me with Samsung, LG and any other manufacturer that wants to wow and woo me! I gotta get the Galaxy Note 4! It's not long now...

NEED A PC / MAC?
One can argue that the PC and Mac are essentially the same in what they are capable of. You can make music on a PC; you can make it on a Mac. The same goes for video, DTP, photo editing / manipulation etc. But it is very possible that you may not need either when using the iPhone / iPad or the Android handset / tablet.

I was asked by Mr. Premium Got-A-Dent-In My iDevice, “Is it possible to do use an Android handset or tablet in conjunction with a projector to do presentations...” Of course! There are projectors that allow the Android user to project via Wi-Fi with an app; it’s also possible to use a big flatscreen panel using HDMI and Chromecast and some handsets allows for the Screen Mirroring with or without a dongle. You won’t need the dongle if, for example, you intend on using a Galaxy S or Note with a Samsung smart TV!

Then there is much iteration of apps that can edit Microsoft Office documents – including PowerPoint presentations. Google has them all: Slides, Docs and Sheets! And there are a few apps available only for the tablet that enables the creation of eBooks!

And should you need to transfer files to be completed on the PC or Mac you can! I guess that’s what you’d call premium functionality! I can’t think of any Android handset above the £130 upwards price range that can’t do any of the above! Personally, I haven’t had much time with budget handsets at the low-end of the market. I had a couple that cost £80 at the time and I had to get rid very quickly as I found them too slow and the screen too small!

BREAKTHROUGH
I think I may have made a breakthrough in understanding the iDevice user psychology! They actually think that the Android handset is unable to perform office tasks such as word processing, projecting slides with the aid of a projector / screen-panel for example. You can also edit video; make high quality professional music... I can’t think of anything that I can’t do on a smartphone / superphone! Okay, I concede that the camera quality can vary on an Android handset – you get what you pay for! Lol! But you are still paying less than you would for an iPhone! Once again, I do not see metal as being a premium component of a handset. My beloved Galaxy S2 looks pretty much like it did when I took it out of the box some years ago! I am pretty proud about that! Now my nephew’s iPhone 5S... Ouch! Hee hee...

Anyway, it was good to read the responses from the Apple Talk articles!

I do think that Android 5, Lemon Meringue Pie, is going to be a major breakthrough for the Android industry! While iOS is catching up to Android it will fall behind again this fall! We could be seeing a new Nexus handset, Nexus 6, to usher in Android 5 which, I predict, will the crème de la crème of mobile operating systems! It should be faster, leaner and even more versatile than before! I think it will have manufacturers doing away with heavy user interface overlays for even more responsiveness! Roll on 64-bit Android! The premiums just keep getting higher!

Hey! If you are happy with your iPhone – and I do hope that 6 and 6L is all what you want it to be – that’s brilliant! It’s all good! But some are marginally better! Wink, wink! Ahem, Galaxy Note 4! Ahem! Wink!

That’s something to think about!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT APPLE TALK 3 PREMIUM?

Above: Could this be a new design departure for the iPhone 6?
Above: Are these the iPhone 6 and 6L?
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE TALK 3
Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers. What’s happening in your wonderful lives? I hope that all is well with you and yours!

Yes, the saga continues with Apple...

#Apple #Samsung #Google #SteveJobs #TimCook #iPadAir #iPhone6 #iPadMini #iPhone6Phablet #GalaxyNote4 #GalaxyAlpha #iPhone6L #GalaxyTabS

IS THE IDEA OF “PREMIUM” REDUNDANT IN TODAY’S MOBILE DEVICE MARKET?
It should be common knowledge to even the most ardent iPhone fan that Apple needs the iPhone 6 to be a success as their market share is constantly being eroded by Android handsets. Through my articles I get a bit of abuse from the Apple disciples and it makes me chuckle a bit because the problem or problems doesn’t lie with me... Uh-uh... The problems lie with Apple itself.

I read and watch opinions / reports from many tech-news sources and the one thing that keeps coming up when talking of the competition i.e. Samsung. And Samsung has responded with the Galaxy Alpha that has been met with mixed reviews. But I like it because of one factor: the non-metallic removable battery cover.

If the iPhone 6 retains the non-removable battery which proves to have a short life then this could have a great impact on its sales. However, I find it strange that tech-journalists (sic) do not make much of an issue regarding Apple’s stance to keep the battery non-removable. I would imagine that this is to retain the “premium” look. I think this is going to be the last time I bring up the subject of “premium” but I feel that I have to address this issue with this article.

Tech-journalists are a funny bunch... ...one minute they claim that the iPhone is a symbol of supreme design (even though I can’t see how this is true) and that is worthy of the word “premium”. I had a friend who always claimed how the expensive materials make her feel that her money is “well spent”. Yet very often she would tell me that her battery is about to go any minute and have to cut video and voice calls short whilst being out and about! I do not get it; when I tease her that she’d be better off with a Samsung handset because she’d be able to swap out the battery for a fully charged spare she is repulsed by the very idea of leaving the Apple nest. Yes, she is also a Mac computer owner and in some respects I understand why she would want to remain faithful to Apple. However, her reasoning does not explain this idea of “premium”.

Inexplicably many tech-journalists marvel at the glass and metal materials that make up the iPhone but surely a “premium” handset is more than the outer materials??? No??? I find it baffling to have read reviews on the Galaxy S range to the present day where it goes something like this:-

“The Samsung Galaxy S5 has the best screen on any handset but the iPhone 5S is the one to get...” Huh??? Why, I even read an issue of ‘What Buy’ magazine on the subject of ‘Best handsets’ and despite the Galaxy S5 having the best screen, best camera, removable battery and power management, etc the iPhone 5S was weighed up as being the best option. What???? This is supposed to be a consumer oriented magazine that gives an objective evaluation on consumer products. Hmmmm... I think you have to be “special” if you can’t work out and evaluate the specifications between the iPhone 5S and the Galaxy S5.

Similarly, tech-journalists that make claims to say the iPhone 5S is better because of the materials alone are lobotomized or receiving gifts from Apple. Tech-journalists must be braindead if they can’t understand that they are holding a premium device that is the Galaxy S5 or Note 3! Seriously, who wants to watch video or view websites on the tiny iPhone 5S screen? Seriously, are you trying to tell me that the Galaxy S and Note range do not feel premium? You gotta be nuts if you think that a handset that consists of 95% screen that is sharper than the retina and sporting a fast quad-core processor, over 1GB RAM and expandable storage via microSD card!

Above: Is this the Samsung Galaxy Note 4?

As I have said so, so many times... The iPhone and iPad suffers terribly from the metal and glass being unable to absorb the shock of a drop which usually results in scratches, dents and broken glass. What is “premium” about that? I tell you, when I hold my Galaxy S1, 2 & 4 and my Galaxy Note 2 in my hands they do not feel cheap! When I am watching a YouTube video, for example, I do not think to myself, “You know... This video would look so much better if my Galaxy Note 2 if it were made from metal...”

Somebody brought to my attention that 85% of Apple’s sales are devices that cost over $400. And somebody else has responded to my last article on Apple, APPLE TALK 2 WINNING?, by saying that Apple has won the battle against Samsung because its profits are up while at Samsung executives have given their bonuses back because they missed financial targets... OK... Let’s take a real look to see if my understanding meets yours...

Once again, if Apple’s strategy is to sell 150 million iPhones be it the 5S or 5C or combination of then that’s a good thing – obviously! But if Apple wants to sell as many iPhone units as possible then they are trailing behind Android’s over 1 billion sales and counting. Oh, but what I am saying isn’t fair because of the inexpensive Android handsets out there. Surely that’s down to Apple, right? You iPhone fans say you want to pay through the nose for a small handset even though you are delirious at the prospect of a larger screen just because it is made out of metal and glass. So, then you can’t blame that on Android if Apple seeks to serve your needs. You want premium materials and you expect to pay for it. Fine! What’s that got to do with Android handsets being able supply quality inexpensive handsets that are mainly plastic with some great metal handsets from HTC, Huawei and now Samsung! However, I DO NOT want the future Galaxy S and Note to feature metal if it is going to bring the prices up! No, Samsung! No! Ha ha! I would rather pay more for a futuristic design based around the indestructible YOUM screen. Did you see those foldable Samsung designs of the not too distant future?

Imagine a scenario whereby your expensive premium iPhone 5S has stopped working for whatever reason and sadly your warranty has expired before your upgrade is due. Are you going to shell out £569.95 to replace it??? Oh, you will opt for the £449.95 5C? Me? If one of my Galaxy S and Note handsets proved to be too expensive to repair I can either get a second hand one or opt for something like the Motorola Moto G with 4G for around £130 or make do with a low-end LG handset such as the L5 for £99 or something even cheaper while I am waiting to upgrade. Sure, it is likely that if you are under contract you can get the handset repaired for free but this is just to illustrate why Android is so popular and iPhone iOS is not.

Take the beautiful, Sci-Fi looking Aquos Crystal from Sharp as an example that the idea of “premium” is like the proverbial King and his new clothes! Yes, it’s transparent that you are superficial! Ha ha! I am only kidding! You like what you like and you pay for what you like! But if someone offered me an iPhone for free I’d sell it to get the Aquos Crystal maybe an Android tablet with the change!

DID APPLE BEAT SAMSUNG?
I still say a resounding NO!!!! Why? Okay, I will tell you why!

Samsung has done and is doing so much in terms of design and meeting different markets from high-end premium, mid and low-range! What has Apple done? One boring handset! One boring handset that is in desperate need of a redesign! Oh, maybe the iPhone 6 will actually be a design departure! Goody for you, the iPhone fan!

If you are prepared to do more then you have more to lose, no? If you keep playing safe you won’t lose much by the way of finance but a whole lot of adventure and innovation. Who dares wins is good motto!

That’s something to think about!
