SYNAPSE CIRCUIT:
2013: A REVIEW.
#Technology2013 #Google #Android #KitKat #Nexus72013 #Nexus5 #Motorola #MotoX #MotoG #Chrome #Chromecast

Good late afternoon / evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! What’s happening with you? Right now I am happy to be sitting in the warmth of my home office while a storm continues to rage outside! So much for a white Christmas! Well, I hope tomorrow will see the storm go away as there is one more day of Christmas shopping to do and contend with!

Here I am, again, looking at what I see as the highs and lows of 2013’s world of Tech!

PART FOUR: THE RISE AND RISE OF GOOGLE.

THE BIGGEST & BEST TECH HOUSE 2013: Google
THE SECOND BEST HIGH-END HANDSET: Nexus 5
THE BEST 7” TABLET: Nexus 7 2013
THE BEST MIDRANGE BUDGET HANDSET: Moto G
BACK FROM THE BRINK: Motorola
While Samsung are actively putting out a mass of handsets and tablets and running away with the Android ball (out of all the other manufacturers on the playing field) it is all down to Google and their awesome Android operating system. In a nutshell, Google has given all manufacturers a blank cheque and they seem to be doing remarkably well!

MOVED
Yes, I was moved by Larry Page’s speech that he gave at the i / O conference of this year. I love the fact that he’s not into creating rivals but unity through technology! And what’s more is that Google are doing their best to provide that bridge across the different platforms. Google is like the Karate Kid to the Apple and Microsoft rivalries that will take very opportunity to let slip a verbal attack. It’s one of the reasons I find it painful to watch an Apple product launch, “Pointless smarmy attack, pointless smarmy attack, pointless smarmy attack... Oooh, we’ve opened a new shop somewhere in the world and it’s fantastic... Smarm, smarm, smarm...” That’s boring to me!

However, it is Google who are doing the most interesting things with technology and part of that technology is on your handset alone! Maps, Gmail, Translate, Search, Now, Drive, YouTube and Chrome to name a few (on the top of my head). Then we get to the Chrome browser and operating system and the many apps available for it that could potentially lead people away from both Apple and Microsoft computers and software. Then we get to the driverless vehicles and the promising Glass wearable computer technology! Where will it end? You may know that Google has recently acquired Boston Dynamics and 7 other robotics companies! I can only imagine that Google is planning on delivering domestic robots as promised to us by many o’ Sci-Fi movies amongst other uses for robotics! A flash of the Will Smith movie, iRobot came to mind... Lol! Another thing that comes to mind is the issue of Singularity when man becomes machine – or something like that... Then you see folk that claim the idea of Singularity is the work of the Devil and the platform they use to spread that gospel is YouTube! Lol! I dunno... <shakes head>

ANDROID
We are seeing the Android operating system go strength to strength with the release of KitKat, 4.4! I think many, many mobile phone users in general do not stop to think about the role of Android in the mobile devices world. Android drives a myriad of handsets and tablets that come in different sizes which is a phenomenal achievement. Perhaps the consumer doesn’t look into the phenomena aspect and is more interested in having a choice. However, many budget handsets have been mis-sold by unscrupulous retailers... We’ll get to the budget Android handset in a bit.

Then there’s the issue of fragmentation... What fragmentation? A majority of consumers do not know or care regarding the issue of fragmentation. What most people want to do on their phones is to connect with their social networks, make free texts, voice and video calls. Consumers are hardly going to notice the differences between Gingerbread and KitKat – especially when they are wrapped up in another manufacturer user interface. Perhaps KitKit will go see many devices united under this one Android operating system. On the other hand fragmentation shouldn’t be an issue in the future simply because handsets have grown to a level of ubiquity whereby it squeezes out the old handsets of bygone years! This brings me to...

THE BUDGET ANDROID HANDSET
It is purely down to Android why there is a budget market for handsets. I can’t imagine a world whereby the only choice is the iPhone or the dire Windows phone! And thank God that I don’t have to imagine such a world where I am forced to buy an over expensive iPhone or a half-baked Windows handset.

In the not too distant past there were some very cheap Android handsets on the market that costs anywhere from £50 to £99! They looked promising and we were told that apps could be saved on a microSD card when we paused to consider the lack of memory and storage on these cheap phones. We spent our money on these handsets in order not to be left out with the hordes of people busting out their iPhones, Samsungs and HTCs or to replace a broken handset. In a nutshell these budget handsets were a load of horsepoop! Only a select few apps were able to run from the microSD card and not before downloading an app to do that! Then there was an issue of speed... Forget it!

Thankfully, Google Motorola gave us the Moto G! The Moto G came out just in time to save the world from these awful budget handsets that gave people the wrong impression of Android. The faith in Android, budget Android, has been restored. Amen! Because of Google Motorola there will be more decent budget handsets to be had next year! Watch out!

Of course, Google and LG brought us the Nexus 5 for a very reasonable price. The Nexus 5 is not quite Galaxy S4, One or G2, but it is a great budget alternative for those who want a reasonably powerful handset at a good price.

Both the Moto G and Nexus 5 flew out of the mobile retail outlets here in the UK – specifically London!

WHAT A TURNAROUND
Yes, indeed what a turnaround for Motorola – Google Motorola! The Moto X was slightly disappointing simply because the teaser advertising made it seem as though consumers would be able to customize the innards i.e. processor, memory, etc. However, the good thing about the Moto X is that it is manufactured in the USA and I am sure that it helped to provide jobs for citizens in this wake of an uncertain economy. Another good thing is, of course, a degree of outer customization. I am sure that the Moto X sold well – especially with the touch free command feature!

Well, you could hardly say that Motorola were doing badly; they had a good hit with the RAZRi and HD but such handsets were not quite on par with the premium beasts from Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and so on. I think the adoring handset fans are looking for the Motorola equivalent of let’s say the Galaxy S4 and when they don’t get it they have ruled Motorola out of the big league so to speak. It begs the question: What does 2014 hold for Google Motorola? Will we see cheaper more powerful handsets? Will we see a flagship decked out with the largest cores, RAM and storage? Will they do a phablet? We’ll just have to wait and see!

IN CHROME WE TRUST
Now just look at what is happening with Google Chrome! The web browser keeps getting better now with search via voice and the mobile browser offers the best Internet surfing solution – more so than the standard web browser that comes with handsets these days!

Then there’s the Chrome OpSys that has seen the release of a new Chromebook from Acer and the decked out Chromebook Pixel! Wow! Who wouldn’t want a Chromebook Pixel?

And the surprise hit for Google has not only been the second generation Nexus 7 but the Chromecast dongle that allows you to stream audio / video to a connected device such as a HDMI compatible TV / Monitor! It costs a mere $35! I am just waiting for it to come to the UK or I might just order one from the States!

ROLL ON GOOGLE
I can see that the scope for Google is vast come 2014! What I envisage for 2014 is that Android goes 64bit; we’ll see more of a range of wearable devices; dual Android and Chrome tablets and PCs and possibly cost effective exoskeletons for those that have problems with mobility. The cost effective exoskeleton would certainly come in handy for people that lift heavy products as part of their jobs and / or for lifting patients in a hospital / hospice. Bring it on!

From Motorola I see that there will be a range of mobile devices that can be put together in a Lego-like manner possibly towards the end of 2014!

Well, I hope you have enjoyed this instalment of 2013 in review!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT: PHONEBLOKS

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
PHONEBLOKS
#phoneblok #handsetbuildingblocks

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope that you had a good day! I have been busying lining up stuff to review! I’ve got a backlog that I have to sort out! I promise you that the reviews are going to come soon!

One my Cyber-travels I came across a pretty neat idea. It’s something that I have thought of but there is nothing new under the Sun, right?

PHONEBLOKS
The person or persons behind Phonebloks reckon that Electronic goods weren’t meant to last. I am not so sure about that. Take the PC as the precursor to the “building block” approach; I have always appreciated the fact that I could extend my PC with removing and replacing components such as the graphics card, more RAM, etc. I am not the kind of person to purchase a PC each year. Heck no! I use my PCs until they are worn out! Oh, another thing about the PC is that one could – with a bit of studying – build and service one’s own system. I reckon custom builds last the longest!

This building block approach could work with the mobile devices (handsets, phablets and tablets). That said, I don’t fully agree that mobile phones are so disposable. I tend to keep my premium handsets as you have probably gathered for a number of reasons, first and foremost is that I take good care of my handsets. My phones look as good as new! Nonetheless I definitely would want to build my own handset by the block!

OPERATING SYSTEM
I envisage that this would be a good platform for Android. I don’t see Apple part taking in this idea... ...perhaps they might do something similar. Hmmmm... MicroNokia could possibly do this as this is pretty much PC territory!

When Motorola announced their “customizable” Moto X I have to say that this what I hoped for and who knows if Motorola would jump on this idea? I think they ought to put their stake in as fast as possible! I also think that this is very much a Google vehicle too! Google + Motorola = Phonebloks! Yes or no?

Perhaps we can see other operating systems establish themselves via this method such as Ubuntu, Tizen, FireFox and some new ones too!

Bring it on! You can check out the Phonebloks site here: Site

What do you reckon?

MOTO X. SWEET!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
MOTO X. SWEET!

#Google #GoogleMotorola #MotoX

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! Oooh, watch this...

Check out this link: Designed by YOU! Made in the US of A!
What do you reckon?

MOTO X. GOT WOOD?

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
MOTO X. GOT WOOD?
#Google #GoogleMotorola #MotoX

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you tonight? It’s official... Today was the hottest day of the year! Gosh! Here’s the latest on the Moto X...

SPEC
Well, the spec contains no real surprises... There’s nothing we didn’t already know apart from the exact size of the screen, 4.7”.

SCREEN
Moto X has a 4.7” display AMOLED display with a 720p HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels) with 312ppi.
CAMERA
The 10MP camera uses a technology called Clear Pixel, which promises to let in 75 percent more light for more accurate sunlight and night time photos. Could the Clear Pixel concept be a cross between HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4? You can shake the Moto X to wake up its camera.

OPERATING SYSTEM
Motorola's X runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and not 4.3. As you'd expect, Moto X leans closer to stock Android, with three on-screen capacitive navigation controls. However, there are some elements that are all Motorola's own.
The active display element called Peek is the most obvious. Notifications pop up on the lock screen; holding the alert bubble brings up more details, like the message interior, even when the phone is locked. Sliding up opens the app.
PROCESSOR
Moto X uses the same X8 processor as Verizon's new Motorola trio. Essentially, the X8 is a mashup of a customized 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and two digital signal processors. Motorola claims this helps keep power consumption very low.

BATTERY
Motorola says the 2,200mAH battery yields 24 hours of battery life, compared to Samsung's 2,600mAh battery, which will last a full work day, but will definitely not tick on for a full trip around the clock.
Motorola has excelled at long-life batteries in its recent phones, so it's safe to expect this one to deliver.

PRICE & AVAILABILITY
Five U.S. carriers will launch with the Moto X: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. You can buy the 16 GB model in all-white or all-black in store, for $199 with a 2 year contract (T-Mobile's off-contract price will vary.)
If you're buying a custom unit through the Moto Maker Web site, you can also choose a 32GB version for $249 with a 2-year contract. Carriers will announce their exact availability for the end of August and early September range. Unlocked versions will also make an appearance in the future.
Interestingly, AT&T customers will be the U.S. users who can access Moto Maker.
What do you reckon?

Take good care!

MOTORUNNING X

Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt. "Hello, Moto X..."

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
MOTORUNNING X

#Motorola #MotoX #Nexus #Nexus5

Good afternoon, Synapse Circuit Readers! Once again, I am so happy to be blessed with another day of exceptional sunny weather! It is beautiful out! I hope you are being spoiled by fantastic weather too!

Are you thinking about the Moto X? I have been wondering too...

IF MOTO X IS THE FLAGSHIP...
...then maybe the reports speculating on the components i.e. the CPU, 720p screen resolution, etc are intended for another (mid-range) device.

The image “leaks” (yeah, right) seem to be pointing to two handsets: the flagship and mid-range.

Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in mid-2011 in order to acquire the company's patents and hardware for its Android ecosystem. Therefore they had to until up until now inject Google into Motorola. Many tech media analysts talk about Motorola is if they are in the same situation as Nokia. Oh no! Google has carefully planned the take over and now they are ready to deliver their NeXus touch to new Motorola devices.

Google may let Motorola spend as much as $500 million to market the Moto X smartphone in the United States and abroad to compete with other smartphones on the market. That indicates that the Moto X is going to be a major device competing with the heavyweights: Samsung, Apple, HTC, LG, etc.

BACK TO FRONT
If you look at the images above – if they are authentic – it appears as though the front back do not match beyond the obvious colour differences.

I believe that we are being prepped for the launch of two or possibly three Moto X devices. Yes, just like they did with the RAZR handsets.

I guess this is why Motorola aren’t entering the tablet market just yet – they are busy re-establishing themselves as serious mobile phone competitors. Besides, Google are said to be delivering the second generation Nexus 7 tablet. So, does this mean...

NO MORE GOOGLE NEXUS HANDSETS?
Now that Google has had their long awaited input into Motorola does this mean we will see the end of Nexus handsets produced in collaboration with other manufacturers? If this is true, what would that mean in terms of component features of future Nexus handsets? Will we see the full effect of the Google design once the collaboration element has been removed?

Whatever the case may be, I am looking forward to the official launch of the Moto X and to hearing more about Google and Google Motorola’s plans for the future.

Let me know what you think!

Take good care!

MOTO X DESIGN YOUR OWN

Colours to match the new Google inspired Motorola logo?

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
GOOGLE MOTOROLA MOTO X DESIGN YOUR OWN

#MotoX #Google #DesignYouOwnMotoX

Good afternoon, Synapse Circuit Readers! Are you all charged up regarding the possibility of designing your own Moto X? Check this out...

DESIGNER INDEPENDENCE DAY
"The first smartphone you can design yourself..." Oh, really? Joanna Stern from ABC News broke the news that Google Motorola will let customers select a colour for the back of the device and another for the trim. There will also be an option to have the phone engraved, a service Apple has made for iPods some time ago. It’s not exactly the same thing as being able to specify internal components. Oh, well...

Google Motorola may have given the wrong impression... This hotly anticipated Moto X has yet to be officially announced, ads in today’s US newspapers say the phone is "designed by you" and emphasizes that it’s made in good ol’ USA — great timing for Independence Day. As a result Google Motorola will be able to ship customized versions of the Moto X only days after customers make the order. Pretty neat, huh?

In addition to multiple colour options and personalized engravings, it is said that customers will be able to upload a photo which will be set as the default wallpaper on the device. Hmmmm, ok... The Moto X will be available to order from the Motorola website (and probably Google Play too)! Carriers are likely to have the stock black version in store.

CEO Dennis Woodside revealed in interviews that the flagship device would be available on a range of US carriers and a version running Android 4.2.2 is said to be in testing at Verizon. The “Droid” branding is being dropped! Oooh!

Reports reveal that Google Motorola will be adding expanded voice recognition abilities in the Moto X. The device can determine when you're driving, for example, and it will automatically switch to the speakerphone function. Users will also be able to launch applications like the camera by flipping the phone. At the moment the specifications are hushed but it is expected that we’re looking at a mid range handset.

You might think that this contradicts Woodside’s statement that the Moto X will be competing with the Galaxy S4, iPhone, etc but I am inclined to believe that it will be the price that will prove to be competitive. There are many people who don’t care for the highest quality camera, fastest processor, etc. Many consumers just want a handset that is capable of having enough storage for the most important apps and a camera decent enough to take pictures to upload to Facebook, etc.

DISAPPOINTED?
Why should you be? Sure, many of us, including me, were excited at being able to specify components as well as the overall look but that’s the nature of us technology lovers: we take an idea like the ability to design our own handsets and add our own embellishments – almost literally! Lol! But there’s an indication that there will be two base models to design upon which could be based on storage capacity.

Many of the people who ask my advice regarding purchasing a new handset often have little or no idea about the internal components. Why, just last night I was asked to look over a potential purchase that featured 512MB of RAM. NO!!!!! Any handset released with 512MB is an epic fail in my most humble opinion. Please read the following articles:

http://synapse-circuit.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/retro-review-motorola-razri.html

NOTE: I NO LONGER THINK THE £69.99 ZTE BLADE 3 IS A GOOD BUDGET HANDSET!!!!

Let me quickly explain why...

Although on the surface anyone would be forgiven for thinking that a handset costing £69.99 would be worthwhile it is when you start updating Facebook and other memory intensive apps that you become unstuck. The Blade 3 becomes so slow that you’d be better off jumping into your car or take public transport to catch up with your family and friends that you’d normally keep tabs with online.

If you have been following my articles on rooting then you will know that I have traded in the ZTE Blade 3 (along with other crap Android handsets). Which brings me to...

DROID RAGE & POSSIBLE MOTO X SPECS
We know that the Moto X should be running Jelly Bean 4.2.2 – hopefully it’ll be able to upgrade to 4.3, etc as fast as the Nexus.

The speculation of Moto X specs indicate the following:

1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro dual core

Main camera 10MP

4.7-inch screen with a 720p resolution

I don’t think the above spec is bad at all – if it turns out to be true! I would expect the RAM to be a respectable 1GB or 2GB. Again, it is all dependent on the price. If the price comes in at around $199 then I expect these handsets to fly out of virtual and brick ‘n’ mortar stores rapidly!

Will a customizable Moto X come to the UK or anywhere else in Europe? Hmmmm...

Some of us have ‘Droid Rage’ whereby it’s power components for the sake of it and the above specs may disappoint. However, the Motorola RAZRi proves that a handset doesn’t need such power. Sure, I would like to see something like the Moto Pro X just because... It’s a fun thing - at least for me - to see manufacturers pack the fastest and powerful CPUs, large amounts of RAM, great camera features and so on into a premium handset! I am sure that will come further on down the line.

If you paid attention to the i / O conference, Google wants t Android to rule the world and it’s not going to happen with a handset with the most highest specifications. It’s going to be with a handset that the everyman / woman can afford. Moto Roll On!

Let me know what you think!

Take good care!
