Or should that be ‘bent’? Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? I hope that you are tip top and that your projects are going exceptionally well! What? You mean to tell me that you don’t have a project? With this beautiful tech at your disposal you mean to tell me that you aren’t doing anything with it? Well,
I guess I ought to ramp up the reviews! Believe me... ...they are coming!

I think it’s pretty safe to state that Apple is going through a tough time of late. Dare I say that things will pick up; lessons should have been learned – we can only hope so! Whether you like it or not I have exposed Apple and its freaky hypnotic PR machine that includes the collection of tech media around the world pretending to be independent both on and offline i.e. TV magazine-like programmes that places Apple on top of the competition! Paper magazines geared towards general technology and specifically mobile devices have done exactly the same thing: placing Apple product on top! I had noticed something very fishy from the Samsung Galaxy S2 and that made me look into what was going on... I reckon I opened up the eyes of others and also confirmed what others had started to notice too!

I am one of the few independent writers that clocks when the wheels fall off that juggernaut of that Apple bus and here I am doing it again!

FALLIBLE!
I think what has happened to Apple is a good thing! Once again, I find myself using the analogy of the Karate Kid movies whereby that awful annoying blonde kid is Apple and the Karate Kid is the competition! Hahaha! It’s true! The lengths that Apple will go to ensure the world thinks,”iSomething” is scarily astounding! Apple loves to divide and conquer! “I’m and Apple...” “And... ...I’m a PC...”

“We’ve been robbed! Someone has come into our house and stolen our technology!! Watch out for inferior copies of our products!!!”

“If someone does everything then what is left for us to do? Feel sorry for us and buy our products...”

“Er... Uhm... We’ve done a phablet! Whoohoo! It’s not quite as good as the originators but at least now you have a landscape mode! That it comes from us, the 6 Plus, you should buy it! Yay!”

You know what they say about imitation... Ha ha!

It is said that under Jobs ‘Bendgate’ wouldn’t have happened but I am not so sure... A great possibility is that Apple would have eventually become bankrupt through losing patent battles outside the USA! They did use Obama to overturn a vital Samsung victory! Apple wouldn’t have been in any position to release a handset beyond 5S! And still to this day there is no confirmation that 5C was a success. I predicted that both the 5S and 5C weren’t going to be the greatest sellers of that time.

Or it could be that Jobs would have been ousted yet again from his own company in order to save it from his death dive with Google in his jaws. Jobs or not it was clear then and now that Apple has to up its game big time – literally! In order to maintain some credibility the tech media has had to admit to Apple being way behind Android handsets but as always many find a way to have the iPhone and iPad edge out a little. This fools nobody but iDevice fanatics.

I don’t know about you but I started to clock a pattern that occurs before and after an Apple keynote! Let me show – if you haven’t seen it...

BEFORE...
In the run up to the next iPhone we get to see a bunch of “leaked” images that factory workers allegedly “sneaked out”. Apple can’t say outright that it, in this recent case, is going to release a bigger handset simply because it looks like defeat (because it is). As a result the constant “leaks” starts to feed the collective populous mind. It works two ways:-

A: The iPhone fan will get it into his / her head that, despite Apple’s scientific research and painful design ethos, what they really wanted was a bigger handset. That’s right, iPhone fan; it’s YOU that’s driving Apple against its principles! But, obviously, it’s really Apple!

B: Non-iPhone users will be expecting to see a larger iPhone – in this case two – and it won’t come as a surprise.

Now that you are thinking in the “right” direction you will see the usual suspects holding physical parts of the iPhone and blogging / vlogging about them... “If this... If that...” These blogger / vloggers may or may not realize that they are part of the PR machine ramping expectations, excitement and curiosity. These tech bloggers / vloggers are help to keep you guessing. Whether you’re a fan or not it becomes a part of your consciousness.

DURING...
During the keynote the expectations reaches a fever pitch so much so that some of us momentarily forget about the competition (as this is the purpose) and focus upon the wonderful gifts that Cook is about to bestow... This is how Cook is able to make the new products seem as the inventions of Apple when in fact they are anything but. We know this. We also know that when Apple reveals a new iPhone or phones they’ll be in the shops soon after!

Oh, one more thing... The reveal of another device; I thought it was going to be either a smartwatch or iPad or both! I feel that because the iPhone is seriously lagging behind Android handsets Cook and co quickly defocuses onto something else. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a “free” U2 album and the Apple Watch – complete with the “Digital Crown”. And it gets worse... ...the Apple Watch is coming sometime next year. How many smartwatches have Samsung released in a year?

AFTER...
We get to see a standard aftermath...

1. News of people queuing up outside Apple stores for days when they don’t have to. The only thing different about the queue reports this time around are that some of the people queuing are looking to sell their places to the real fanatics!

2. News of record sales... Every time there is news of record sales and then later on we see a different result.

3. Odd headlines to state that a record number of seemingly only Samsung trade-ins and that many Android folk are jumping ship! Get onboard before you look silly! Ha ha! But it turns out that the buyers are repeat customers of Apple. I don’t think repeat customers aren’t enough hence the larger iPhone handsets to make some more gains. If Android has over 80% of the world market then where does it leave Apple? It is clear that Apple needs some more sales!

GOSH! THAT’S NUFF GLITCHES!

Putting such a large phone in your pocket is assking for trouble!

I can only imagine a rabid Tim Cook cursing like it’s going out of fashion over “bendgate”. Could this derail further sales? If the prices for these new fangled iPhones aren’t off-putting then perhaps the fragility of the products will; however it appears – through independent testing – the standard iPhone 6 isn’t so easy to bend.

A bizarre thought entered my head... Could it be that the fragility of the 6 Plus was designed as a get out of failure clause? I mean if it turns out that the iPhone user prefers the standard over the Plus Apple could say that the “bendgate” scare was a major cause (for disappointing sales). Maybe the newly acquired designer can redesign the iPhone for today’s market as Android keeps blazing the trail for innovation. Once upon a time Cook would claim “fragmentation” regarding those “other guys” when it is apparent that iOS has scaling issues when it comes to the development for apps; this is why the standard iPhone has an odd resolution: 750 x 1334 pixels. It seems as though iOS developers have their work cut out to reach Android app scaling standards so that one day iPhone users will enjoy QHD screens!

Then there are issues with iOS 8! To be honest whenever there’s an operating system upgrade there are opportunities for bugs but considering Apple have only a few handsets to take care of that upgrading iOS should be a chinch! Android is a huge contrast with regards to the sheer number of handsets it has to take care of! Is it any wonder that Google takes its time with Android updates?

HUMBLE (APPLE) PIE

Ouch! That's gotta hurt! 

As I was saying... I think these unfortunate occurrences can be good for Apple as I would imagine that Cook and co can relax and not have to worry about having to be this infallible machine. Humans are behind Apple and humans can make mistakes. However, it’s how the mistakes are dealt with that makes all the difference. Apple has, in the past, used various techniques to deflect the blame when things have gone wrong. You can fool some of the people some of the time...

Apple has a great opportunity to turn things around! There’s nothing like admitting fault and refocusing. You know for yourself that when someone can’t admit to being at fault that you can’t trust he / she won’t make the same mistake(s) again.

I would love to see Apple making good product that don’t need the smoke ‘n’ mirrors nonsense. I would also like to see them making an effort to be more like Google in the way they create products across the mobile device platforms. Apple Pay is just a step backwards for NFC payments that we’ll stick to using our credit / debit cards. C’mon, Apple! Show us some of that gigantic big, big love!

That’s something to think about!

GET BENT!
No doubt that you, as an iPhone fanatic, have noticed the design glitch that besets the iPhone 6 Plus. Some iPhone 6 Plus owners have complained about the propensity for the handset to bend in the pocket.

I have always said that aluminium is not the best material for a handset for the following reasons... Yes, again! Here are the reasons...

1. The metal scuffs, scratches and dents upon impact and contact with other materials such as your keys. You might have forgotten that your keys are in your pocket and when you shove your iPhone in your pocket the case is scratched!

2. It’s malleable! So, the increasingly thin and larger handset made from aluminium is prone to bending out of shape!

No matter how much you are dedicated to Apple and the iPhone these facts are inescapable. No amount of name calling can change that fact!

FEEL THE HEAT!
Me? Personally, I would never place a handset in my jean pockets as this can restrict my movements and there is a potential for pain! OUCH!!!! As I have said before, I have seen many women with super-well-endowed buttocks crush all manner of handsets!

Another factor that people tend to forget about it is HEAT! Most handsets have a tendency to heat when in use and the heating gets worse through enclosure i.e. a protective case and in the pocket! A handset as thin as the iPhone 6 Plus is the aluminium gets heated and the malleability increases to the point where it will bend in the pocket to coincide with body movement i.e. legs or buttocks.

THE ANSWER!
In case you haven’t worked it out: Do not place your iPhone 6 Plus in your trouser pockets – especially if you wear them tight!

It’s not rocket science! Lol! But seriously, I do think that Samsung and other manufacturers have the right idea in using polycarbonate as the main material for a handset. I am not saying that metal shouldn’t be used at all but metal has to be forged with a very sound structure that does not yield to everyday strains such as an accidental drop or momentarily bent through forgetting that you’ve temporarily placed it in your trouser pocket to free your hands as an example.

That’s something to think about!

VERY HANDY
7 September 2014, Central London: I know, I know... ...this one is a bit of a cheat in that it’s not strictly a “tablet” and in my eyes it’s not even a “phablet”. I see the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 as a handset but not everybody will see it the same way as I do so I thought I’d include the sighting of a Galaxy Note 3 in the wild as it were!

When I spotted the woman on the bus with Galaxy Note 3 I first thought it was a 7” or 8” tablet. But on close inspection I realized what it was. This is what some iPhone users long for: a nice beautiful screen that puts the “retina” concept to bed! This woman was so immersed into her screen that she seemed cut off from her immediate surroundings. She was in her element!

The Galaxy Note 3 appears to be very popular on the streets – more so than the Galaxy S5! For a lot of people the Galaxy Note is a happy and handy medium between a phone and tablet. I suspect that the Galaxy Note 4 and its Edge variant will sell a whole lot more than the Galaxy Note 3. By the looks of things it has taken over the Galaxy S as the main premium handset. Samsung has to do something drastic in the design department to revive the Galaxy S!

A little bit about the Galaxy S5 and why I think it didn’t take off like it should have...

For starters who can remember the Galaxy S5 launch? It’s a vague memory compared to the Galaxy S3. In my opinion Samsung has to get back to that kind of launch standard with the Galaxy S! The Galaxy Note 4 launch was several steps into the right direction where the launch of a new product is concerned!

I don’t think people understood that the Galaxy S5 was created for everyday life with the heart rate monitor, dust and water resistance and design improvement. It was meant for busy people on the go! But I do think that the Galaxy S5 will be a slow burner and seep its way into the mainstream like the GS2 did! In fact the GS2 still sells today!

Also people were expecting a QHD screen and more of a design departure. As a result the Galaxy S5 gave up some of its market share to the deserving LG G3 and HTC One M8.

I am also inclined to think that the Galaxy S could possibly benefit from taking the best of its variants and place them in the following:-

Galaxy S6 Ultra – here we have the camera that is featured on the KZoom but better! The GS6 Ultra should have a 5.7” screen to accommodate for the updated camera lens. It should also have a curved edge for the camera (amongst other functions)!

Galaxy S6 Standard – this handset features the 5.5” screen and is obviously an upgrade to the GS5.

Galaxy S6 Mini Ultra – I think that 4.7” handsets could be on the way out. The GS6 Mini Ultra is a 5” screen handset that features ultra thin bezels to make the handset seem smaller. This will appeal to the individuals who want style over hardcore hardware.

There is room to create Galaxy S models based upon sports and outdoor activities. And there is room to create a Galaxy S model based on a strong camera that will compete with compact cameras.

TAKE NOTE
Lately it seems that I am on a streak with my predictions... No sooner had I completed my article on the future of the “phablet” and how 7” tablets have become the new phablet – what with 3G / 4G built into them – I started to see articles come out in agreement with my observations.

I would imagine that Samsung will be able to push the Galaxy Note up to 6.5” inches in the future. Perhaps the next thing from Samsung is handset that folds out into a 7” tablet!

IT’S HAPPENING
Yes, I am getting my idea of a phablet! It’s a 7” 4G enabled tablet and it should be with me within a few days! I am not going to say what it is yet... But it’s on the way! I will let you know and then do a review on it.

I can tell you that I am getting it primarily to replace a handset that has stopped functioning and that it’s 4G which will enable me to watch videos without the buffering that can happen on 3G. I am also getting it for the purpose of music making. We shall see... I am a little excited as it’s my first tablet – there are expectations! Plus there are certain tablet apps that are not available for the 5.5” to 6” tablet.

On the other hand, I really do see this move as the replacement of a handset. If I were to get a proper tablet for more than just music I would opt for another model either 8” or 10”. And by the time I am ready I suspect that there will be a host of models with a 64-bit CPU. I am also hoping that the tablet I am getting will be able to get an upgrade to Android 5 later on this year. I do think that Android 5 should be compact enough so that it can upgrade devices with a modest specification i.e. dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? I hope that I have helped you in choosing gifts this Christmas as I am sure I have done last year!

Here I am looking at what I see as the highs and lows of 2013’s world of Tech!

PART ONE: THE YEAR OF SAMSUNG.

GALAXY S4 & GALAXY NOTE 3: WINNERS OF HANDSETS OF THE YEAR.
SAMSUNG: BEST MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR.
SAMSUNG: BEST INNOVATORS OF THE YEAR.
BEST MOBILE PHONE DESIGN OF 2013: Galaxy S4.
BEST PHABLET OF 2013: Galaxy Note 3.
I think it is pretty safe to say that Samsung has practically sewn up this year for mobile technology – let alone audio / visual. The Galaxy S4 is undoubtedly a great handset that surpasses the iPhone 5S easily! The 5” Super AMOLED full HD 441 ppi screen is awesome! The 13MP camera is fantastic for photos and video. And despite the reservations expressed by some over TouchWiz I think it’s the most developed of all the Android skins: it works! The quad-core CPU shifts! Now about the design... ...yes, you probably think that the design award should go to HTC but as beautiful as the One is I think it is not very practical. The fact that the Galaxy S4 packs so much in and can retain a removable battery is very, very remarkable indeed! Sure, the design is not as flash in its outer appearance but it is designed for practicality / usability. It’s perfect in its minimalism.

The Galaxy Note 3 has yet to be bettered by any manufacturer! Apple doesn’t have a reply! Well, not yet at least... Once again, you can remove and replace the battery! The camera is superb – recording 4K video 30 frames per second and full HD at 60 fps and the S Pen is an outstanding way to interact with this beautiful device! Come on... ...what’s there not to like about this superlative handset? The size?! It’s only 5.7”! Yes, size matters because I am seeing more and more women using this device! Lol! It’s true! On my travels I am seeing women on public transport whipping out their Galaxy Note 3 devices like it’s second nature! And that’s how it should be! I feel so left out because I would love to have a Note 3! My contract with my Note 2 finishes this time next year, so at this rate I am looking at a Note 4 or 5! 

There’s already talk of the S5 and Note 4 making an early appearance next year; the CES 2014? Who knows for sure? You can never quite tell what Samsung is going to do! I have heard that they aren’t very pleased with the over 40 million sales of the S4 and would like to sell even more so the pressure is on for the Galaxy S5! We’ll see... But when I do the research and talk to the mobile phone outlets in the UK (naturally I can’t go to each and every shop) the Galaxy S4, S4 Mini, Note 3, S3 and S3 Mini come out as the top sellers then it is a scramble between the HTC One and Sony Z1. Then, of course, it’s the Google and Motorola handsets that are currently flying out of the stores! The Nexus 5 and Moto G handsets are flying out the retail outlets that stock them! Gosh!

What I don’t want is for Samsung to feel pressured into using metal for the S5 – especially if it means a non-removable battery! The only way I could live with a non-removable battery handset from Samsung is if they upped the ante on the battery duration! If the future battery could last at least 3 days on a single charge with reasonable usage then I wouldn’t care too much about not being able to remove the battery! However, what I would care about is a dent or a scratch if I were to drop the metallic handset accidentally! I have seen battered iPhones and they do not look nice at all!

I would prefer Samsung to use rubber! I am serious! A rubber skin that can easily be replace when worn out! And because the display would be flexible I wouldn’t need to worry about a cracked screen! Please, Samsung! Are you reading this????

INNOVATION
Y’know, I get the feeling that the CEO of Samsung, Kwon Oh Hyun, wakes up and thinks to himself, ‘I dreamt of this model and I want it out there now!’ I have lost count of the amount of devices that Samsung has put out this year alone! It is staggering! I particularly loved the S4 Zoom! The S4 Zoom is another Samsung handset that I would have loved to have as I enjoy taking pictures on my weekend treks! I can only imagine what the S5 Zoom will be like! I wonder how much of those units were sold. All I know is that they sold out in one retail outlet upon release! I know there is scope for this kind of device! I do think that Samsung is capable of delivering a better camera experience than it has done so far – not that I am complaining! But I know that the best is yet to come!

Tablets... Well, we know that Samsung has the technology to usurp the iPad specs as shown with the Samsung Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablets. Sales of Samsung tablets are up as, like their handsets, they have a great range in tablets. I personally would like to see HD resolution as a base standard! Samsung faces a lot of competition from Android manufacturers of the 7” variety! Rumour has it that Samsung are on the verge of unleash tablets of a “professional” nature! What that entails is anyone’s guess... I don’t want to speculate as I am often disappointed at the end result!

Will 2014 be Samsung’s year yet again? I think it will be! Who can stop them?

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! What a beautiful day it was considering it is the beginning of autumn! Shine on! Yes, indeed... Apple is on the trail that Samsung will have blazing come tomorrow...

COLOURFUL
This could be the day when we’ll see the Apple’s true colours (hee hee) as the tagline is, "This should brighten everyone's day."

Sure, the inexpensive iPhone 5C(olour) may appeal to those who are on a budget and dare I say that it might entice users of Android and Windows who would like an second or third handset as an alternative. Perhaps the iPhone 5C could very well take the place of BlackBerry handsets. On my travels I see the BlackBerry being the secondary handset.

Expect super-cheesiness as expressed with the multicoloured iPods released last year. One possible downside is that it may not feature Siri! Oooh! We’ll see...

iPHONE 5S
Hmmmm... To be honest I can’t see any major changes in this device should it turn out to be a reality. It would be very much like the 4S in that the additions will not be major. Perhaps we could see enhancements to the camera. The 5S could sport a 13MP camera capable of 4K video.

I also predict that Siri will be further enhanced to match that of the constantly on Moto X experience.

And everybody knows that iOS 7 borrows heavily from Android – nothing wrong with that. However, Cook did say that “Android should develop their own technology...” Yet Android, in my opinion, is far more advanced that iOS.

Anyway, let’s hope that the September 10 will bring iPhone / iOS fans good if not great news!

COMPETITION
As you know the competition that the iPhone faces is rife! Again, I think that the Android devices released thus so far this year has trounced iOS! Do I really have to go into reasons why? Okay! Alright! You need convincing, huh? You’ve got it...

1. Android 4.2. and 4.3 are superb operating systems that does what you want how you want.

2. There is a vast amount of choice with Android handsets and tablets; so many different sizes, designs, etc.

3. Android is leading in innovation.

Seriously... ...just last week I met a guy in a phone shop who turned to me and said, “This (pointing at the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini) is my next phone. I am done with the iPhone. The iPhone is behind the times...” Me? I would have gone for the S4! Each to his or her own...

I do think that the Galaxy Note 3 is going to do some major damage to the handset market in more ways than the iPhone 5C ever could. When you put the 5C in context it is just a cut down version of the real thing. I do not see what is attractive about having a cut down in many colours encased in plastic. I’d prefer the real thing.

Apple using plastic on their 5C reinforces that Samsung and other manufacturers have got it right when it comes to using plastic on their premium handsets. I really hope that doesn’t change. However, I think that Apple is using the plastic in a manner as if to say, “Plastic is good enough for a cut down version of our top handset and we, unlike, others would never use it on a premium device...” I think this is going to backfire on Apple because the premium iPhone is really too prissy by today’s Android and Windows standards; a well worn iPhone looks anything but premium. Whereas a lot of the Android handsets, on the whole, look pristine in comparison!

I do think that Apple needs to rethink their notion of luxury for plastic materials as it would enhance durability and the consumer will have more options than black and white.

I think this is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s been a short while since I’ve written an article! A holiday was well overdue! Lol! I hope you’ve had a good summer holiday and if you’re still on it I hope you will make the most of it to the max!

SAMSUNG ARE GEARING UP (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) TO RELEASE THE GALAXY NOTE 3 & GEAR SMARTWATCH!!!!
Yes, yes, yes! Soon the whole world will get to know what much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 3 entails. As usual we get the image leaks and spec speculation. Here’s the anticipated spec:

5.68” 1080p display, 3 GB RAM and a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation and 3x optical zoom. Gosh!

It is expected to come in two versions – one with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and one with a 1.8GHz octa-core Exynos processor. It has been said that Samsung are having overheating problems with their octa-core processor, what a shame.

One of the anticipations / expectations of the Note 3 is that it will be able to record video in 4K! Wow!

4K VIDEO RECORDING
Revolutionary? No. 4K video was inevitable. That’s the nature of tech. There’s a strong possibility that 4K will be a feature with the next iPhone. Now could that be iPhone 5S or 6? But iOS 7 is prepared for it.

Acer has beaten both Apple and Samsung to the punch because the Liquid S2 is the first smartphone or, in this case, phablet, to be able to record video in 4K!

Jeez... I can remember the days of trying to capture analogue video from a Hi8 tape to the computer hard drive! I cannot begin to tell you what a hassle that was! And if you have no idea what I am writing about then consider yourself to be very, very fortunate indeed.

Prepare to upgrade some of your hardware!

CARBON FIBRE / METAL?
I am probably the only person or at least one of the few who wants to keep the Galaxy range plastic. If you have been reading my articles then you will know why! OK, I’ll tell you: Plastic is more durable than metal and does not suffer from scratches, scuffs and dents. I reckon that’s why it is possible for the Galaxy premium range of handsets can have a removable back for the battery.

There are rumours abound that the Note 3 will feature either a carbon fibre or metal body or perhaps a combination of both carbon fibre and metal? I think metal for a handset that is primarily screen is a waste of time if it meant that the battery was non-removable. I wonder how many HTC One owners are suffering from sudden battery death. After purchasing a second hand One X I can tell you that I will never go for a handset with a non-removable battery again.

AVAILABILITY
Apparently the UK is expected to see the Note 3 go on sale on the 16 September 2013 on the Three network. It has yet to be ascertained whether or not it’ll be available for purchase or pre-order on that date.

At this rate I am looking at the Galaxy Note 4 by the time my contract runs out! Lol! Mercy!

GEAR SMARTWATCH
The other much talked about device is the Samsung Gear smartwatch. It is said that the smartwatch is not capable of making calls and that it is intended to compliment, I presume, the Galaxy set of premium handsets. Think of it as a cursor – an extension to the smartphone / phablet that is like the equivalent of a remote control. I envisage being able to read notifications and accept calls through the Gear smartwatch that originates from the handset.

I am very curious to find out what the Gear is all about and I will be put out of my misery come the 4^th September 2013!

GALAXY NOTE SECOND GENERATION TABLET?
Knowing Samsung as I have come to know them, it would be a surprise to see the release of a new tablet. It could be the Galaxy Note second generation set of tablets that will possibly start with a 12” and 10” versions will also be revealed on the 4^th.

I am very, very curious about aspects such as the screen resolution; I think that it is about time that Samsung adds a retina beating screen to their range of tablets! They cost enough! Lol!
