Precise Audio Processing

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope all is well with you! Sadly, I am struck down with a bad cold and hope to be back up and running, back to 101% very soon!

Yes, it’s that time again... Time to speculate on what will be the Galaxy S5! And this time there won’t be a lot of space to speculate! I am presuming that Samsung is aiming to strike before the imminent iPhone 6 is launched later this year!

BARCELONA, 24/02/2014
It seems as though Samsung is going to return to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to wow visitors and press alike with the Galaxy S5! Samsung are said to be disappointed with worldwide sales of over 40 million Galaxy S4 units. Only an ambitious company that Samsung is can be disappointed where other companies would be over the moon to have sold as many units! I think that it is fair to say that in the US the iPhone is always going to be the top seller. Samsung is the undisputed king of the Android market outside the US! Knowing Samsung they will not be content until they topple iPhone sales on US soil!

Launching the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress makes a great deal of sense as the most of the world will be watching!



FORGET IT!
Uh-uh! I don’t mean forget the Galaxy S5 taking off and doing considerably well around the world – including the US! What I mean is that I am not going to bother to speculate too deeply on the specifications because I have learned that Samsung will do its own thing regardless of expectations!

Eyes Sensor? It would be ideal. Fingerprint Sensor? It appears to be more likely! I am perfectly happy with using a password for security! Judging from what I have been hearing about the iPhone 5S the fingerprint scanner isn’t all that! I think such security technology is in its infancy and there are bound to glitches here and there – especially when the giants of tech try to outdo each other in this race for dominance!

64 bit processor? Unlikely for the S5 but very possible for the Galaxy Note 4! I know that Samsung would like to go 64 bit but it may be too early for the GS5! It wouldn’t at all surprise me if Samsung released a 64 bit version of the S5 further down the line! But I really don’t think 64 bit is a crucial component for Android handsets at the moment; the quad core processor has become so fast over the last year - much to the joy of Android users enjoying premium handsets of which the Galaxy S4 is one!

I would imagine that the GS5 will get a 16MP camera capable of 4K. Yes, I would imagine that keen photographers would want a 20MP camera to match the likes of Sony! But I am quite sure that the camera is going to be great! Many Galaxy S fans are hoping for an optical stabilizer!

TOUCHWIZ / MAGAZINE UX
It is said that Samsung is looking to give TouchWiz an overhaul so that it looks like the best of Google Now, Windows 8 and HTC Sense = Magazine UX. But I would imagine that most people who are unhappy with TouchWiz can always use another launcher! Personally, I don’t mind TouchWiz on the GS4 and Note 2 as I find these beasts fast enough for my needs! 

DESIGN
As much as I like the Galaxy S4 I do believe that HTC really showed how great an Android phone can look with the One!

I thought the Galaxy S2 was a great design departure than that of the S3 that followed. The S4 seemed to be a refinement of the S3 and Note 2. I do believe that Samsung will be pushing for something as radical as the HTC One! But I am hoping very much that this does not come at the cost of a removable battery!

If you have been following my articles you will know that I am not a fan of metal because it makes the handset more expensive to produce, plus metal dents and scratches. Having seen battered iPhones I am convinced that Samsung has got the materials right! That said, I have yet to see a battered HTC One!

If I am correct, Samsung will continue to refine the design of the Galaxy Note 3 and that will reflect on the Galaxy S5! Looking at the passed patent designs for a Samsung handset it is very possible that the GS5 will feature a wrap around display thus being the first handset to do away with the bezel altogether. Speaking of display...

DISPLAY
Many have said that the Galaxy S4, Note 3 and HTC One has smashed the iPhone retina screen. It is said that Samsung are going to make the retina screen finally redundant with 2,560×1,440 resolution at 560 dpi! Wow – if it turns out to be accurate! In any event I think that we will be seeing a rather futuristic looking handset that is mainly screen! I do think that there will be no physical buttons on this version and that will probably delight Google who have been advocating that manufacturers follow their non-physical button aesthetic. Fingers crossed! Sometimes the physical button can be a little cumbersome at times when compared to using handsets without!

ANDROID
I expect the Galaxy S5 to be running the latest KitKat, 4.4.

RUMOUR
The rumour is that the GS5 will feature 4GB of RAM! I would imagine that this is to make up for not having a 64 bit CPU!

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! 2013 has been, predictably, an amazing year thus so far! If you love tech like I do the chances are you’re feeling dizzy with anticipation. My goodness, the evolution of the handset has been rapid and amazing! Both Android and Windows are driving this evolution extremely hard!

The major manufacturers / tech houses have thrown down:-

Apple iPhone 5S
LG G2
MicroNokia Lumia 925
Motorola Moto X (yes, Google Motorola are back with style)
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 & Gear smartwatch
Sony Xperia Z1 (with the Z Ultra to come)

In my humble opinion it’s Apple that’s trailing behind; sure the 64-bit operating system is certainly an advancement – first! But at the moment a 64-bit handset is not a major factor. And you all know what I think of the Touch ID addition. Samsung has recently announced that they are going to present a 64-bit handset for 2014 and is said to be waiting for Google to release a 64-bit version of Android. More proof to squash the odd idea that Samsung will move away from Android. Could this be what Android 5 is all about? Well, it (Lemon Meringue Pie – that’s what I’m calling it) is sure as heck going to be a major release.

The best of each of the handsets listed above could be combined in one badass handset of all handsets! I appreciate how the manufacturers have left each other a bit of the market between them. Samsung and Sony have gone for handset photography in very unique ways with the Galaxy Zoom S4, Xperia Z1 and the DSC-QX100. Why, just the other day I was speaking with a couple of friends of mine about photography. One friend is a dedicated photographer and makes her living from her skills and the other uses mobile camera technology to bypass having to have a separate camera and a bunch of lenses. I side with using mobile camera technology due to the undeniable excellent quality coming from the iPhone, Galaxy S4, S4 Zoom, Galaxy Note 3 Lumia and Z1 for example. They can be used to print up to A3 documents that are pleasing to the eye! I can certainly vouch for the Samsung premium Galaxy range as I have printed documents that include photos taken from the S3, and Note.

Video is a different kettle of fish; as sharp and clear as the full HD quality can be it is always the sound that let such videos down. However, many people – thanks to the YouTube phenomenon – don’t mind the guerrilla nature of mobile phone video footage.

My question is: What will Google add to the mobile phone photography market?

GOOGLE NEXUS 5
After the release of the Nexus 4 Google’s Vic Gundotra has been promising to deliver a camera with a difference. So far the innovations have been with the camera software – if they could only deliver this sphere option!

Depending on the side of the fence you’re sitting on with regards to megapixels, Google Nexus is either a little behind or holding their own when it come to the 8MP camera on the current Nexus 4.

According to HTC and now Apple, less megapixels is more; the megapixels are fewer but larger to let in more light. So, what you get with these cameras is a clear photo that is smaller in size in comparison to the cameras featuring a higher megapixel value.

HTC One:                             2688 x 1520 pixels
Samsung Galaxy S4:            4128 x 3096 pixels

Big difference! You will almost certainly notice the difference when importing into a document and printing it in a professional bureau. The HTC One takes very, very good low light conditions by using a lower megapixel value that is larger to let in more light; Samsung, LG and other manufacturers rely on a night mode and the use of an LED flash. Personally, because I often use a professional printer I prefer the higher megapixel value as utilized by LG, Samsung and Sony to great effect.

What direction will the Nexus 5 take? It looks very likely that LG will be realizing the Nexus 5 and if that is the case I am anticipating a 13MP main camera with 2 or 3 or perhaps even a 5MP camera for high quality selfies!

4K video? Hmmm... Is 4K video something of importance? Now that’s a question! Apple and Sony do not seem to think so! Will the Nexus 5 go that one better than the iPhone and Xperia Z1? I’d be a little disappointed if Google dropped the ball with the camera.

People seem to be waking up to the potential of using their premium handset as a camera and camcorder. In fact the phenomena of full HD video coming to the smartphone effectively killed off the pocketcam market. See, I can’t even remember that flippin’ pocketcam? What’s it called? Never mind, it is gone!

I can’t wait to see the camera software!

CPU, RAM, STORAGE AND EVERYTHING ELSE
I am expecting a 1.9GHz quad CPU or faster with 2GB RAM and the same 8GB and 16GB storage options. It would be advantageous if there was a microSD card slot! I think the argument against having a microSD card slot is very weak; if non-technical people find the subject of storage confusing it is an indication that Android can be improved upon in that direction.

This time around Google will go for the same 4.7” screen but in full HD. Would Google do a phablet? The Nexus 5.5? Yes, why not? I think this is the one thing that is missing from Google, the phablet. Yeah, come on Google, do a phablet! I wanna see your take on it!

I would want either a removable battery or a power-pack unit similar to that of what HTC has done to extend the life of the One.  

I am also very curious about the design; what will Nexus 5 look like? I thought and still think that the Nexus 4 is wonderfully designed. Could the bezel get any thinner?

IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS?
I guess it would make sense to release the Nexus 5 in time for Christmas! It would make for a great marketing statement: the Christmas gift that you’d want to give to yourself!

PRICE?
£290 for the 16GB version? Wishful thinking, huh?

ANDROID 4.4?
It could very well be that Android 4.4, KitKat will be the operating system with Lemon Meringue Pie, 5, to come in 2014.

In the meantime we can enjoy the “leaks” as they appear up until the end!

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s been a short while since I’ve written an article! A holiday was well overdue! Lol! I hope you’ve had a good summer holiday and if you’re still on it I hope you will make the most of it to the max!

SAMSUNG ARE GEARING UP (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) TO RELEASE THE GALAXY NOTE 3 & GEAR SMARTWATCH!!!!
Yes, yes, yes! Soon the whole world will get to know what much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 3 entails. As usual we get the image leaks and spec speculation. Here’s the anticipated spec:

5.68” 1080p display, 3 GB RAM and a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation and 3x optical zoom. Gosh!

It is expected to come in two versions – one with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and one with a 1.8GHz octa-core Exynos processor. It has been said that Samsung are having overheating problems with their octa-core processor, what a shame.

One of the anticipations / expectations of the Note 3 is that it will be able to record video in 4K! Wow!

4K VIDEO RECORDING
Revolutionary? No. 4K video was inevitable. That’s the nature of tech. There’s a strong possibility that 4K will be a feature with the next iPhone. Now could that be iPhone 5S or 6? But iOS 7 is prepared for it.

Acer has beaten both Apple and Samsung to the punch because the Liquid S2 is the first smartphone or, in this case, phablet, to be able to record video in 4K!

Jeez... I can remember the days of trying to capture analogue video from a Hi8 tape to the computer hard drive! I cannot begin to tell you what a hassle that was! And if you have no idea what I am writing about then consider yourself to be very, very fortunate indeed.

Prepare to upgrade some of your hardware!

CARBON FIBRE / METAL?
I am probably the only person or at least one of the few who wants to keep the Galaxy range plastic. If you have been reading my articles then you will know why! OK, I’ll tell you: Plastic is more durable than metal and does not suffer from scratches, scuffs and dents. I reckon that’s why it is possible for the Galaxy premium range of handsets can have a removable back for the battery.

There are rumours abound that the Note 3 will feature either a carbon fibre or metal body or perhaps a combination of both carbon fibre and metal? I think metal for a handset that is primarily screen is a waste of time if it meant that the battery was non-removable. I wonder how many HTC One owners are suffering from sudden battery death. After purchasing a second hand One X I can tell you that I will never go for a handset with a non-removable battery again.

AVAILABILITY
Apparently the UK is expected to see the Note 3 go on sale on the 16 September 2013 on the Three network. It has yet to be ascertained whether or not it’ll be available for purchase or pre-order on that date.

At this rate I am looking at the Galaxy Note 4 by the time my contract runs out! Lol! Mercy!

GEAR SMARTWATCH
The other much talked about device is the Samsung Gear smartwatch. It is said that the smartwatch is not capable of making calls and that it is intended to compliment, I presume, the Galaxy set of premium handsets. Think of it as a cursor – an extension to the smartphone / phablet that is like the equivalent of a remote control. I envisage being able to read notifications and accept calls through the Gear smartwatch that originates from the handset.

I am very curious to find out what the Gear is all about and I will be put out of my misery come the 4^th September 2013!

GALAXY NOTE SECOND GENERATION TABLET?
Knowing Samsung as I have come to know them, it would be a surprise to see the release of a new tablet. It could be the Galaxy Note second generation set of tablets that will possibly start with a 12” and 10” versions will also be revealed on the 4^th.

I am very, very curious about aspects such as the screen resolution; I think that it is about time that Samsung adds a retina beating screen to their range of tablets! They cost enough! Lol!

We’ll see! Roll on Unpacked 4 September 2013!
