Good early morning, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope that all is well with you! I think the UK is going to experience another heat wave this weekend! Bring it on! Yes, the iPhone 5C rumour..

iPHONE 5C
I guess you may have heard about the rumour regarding the iPhone 5C – ‘C’ standing for colour! Apparently the iPhone 5C will be aimed at the budget market and in glorious Technicolor! Ha ha! And this budget iPhone 5C will be made from the innards of the iPhone 4 and the body will be made from wonderful plastic! Hey, plastic has worked for Samsung! But somehow I imagine that the plastic used on the rumoured iPhone 5C will be of a very cheap quality – iPod material.

If you remember I correctly predicted that the iPhone 5 will be dead in the water; Apple simply got it wrong. The iPhone 5C will be wrong too; it simply is too late! Sure, there will be Apple / iPhone fans that will go for it (in small numbers) but it will cheapen the iPhone perceived notion of being reassuringly luxurious and therefore expensive.

Apple are trying so hard to get into these niche markets that Android has been able to create and sustain but they are going to have a very hard time in doing so! Take the iPad mini as an example of damned if they do and damned if they don't; that’s right, the question of adding a retina display to the darned thing! Already the iPad mini has eaten into the iPad’s market share because it is obviously cheaper. But should Apple place a retina screen on the mini then I think that iPad sales will drop like a stone!

The way Apple has positioned its brand makes it difficult for it to create products for a budget market. This is what Jobs realized and that’s why he never wanted to produce anything other than one iPhone and one iPad. But with Cook, Apple is all over the shop! Should the iPhone 5C come out it is going to make their advert that asks “If everybody is making everything then what can we make?” (I'm paraphrasing here) look hypocritical and stupid because it tries to cash in on the versatility of Android! It’s a shame for Apple fans; the better strategy for Apple would be to just up the screen size on the iPhone to 4.5”, skip 5S (if it’s on schedule) and put out iPhone 6 in two flavours: 1. The luxurious glass and aluminium. 2. Plastic for those who don’t want to pay extra for premium materials prone to dents, scratches and cracks!

THE TSUNAMI CALLED ANDROID
I've said it once, I've said it many times, 2013 is the year of Android superphone! Just look at the great handsets that have come out already:

Samsung Galaxy S4 & Mini
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
HTC One and Mini
Google Motorola Moto X
LG G2

Then there are the smartphones from Huawei i.e. the Ascend P6 to the budget Ascend Y300! Oh, not forgetting Sony’s efforts with the Xperia Z!

How can the iPhone possibly compete?

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! Is it possible that HTC has gotten a handset dead on, bang to rights?

HTC is obviously aiming at the mid-market and I think the Desire 500, price depending, could work very well. The 8MP camera could be a good selling point for those that love to regularly update their social networks with pictures and videos. It’s good that there’s a microSD card slot (that should have come with the One). However, the 1800 mAh battery does not seem up to much and if it is anything like the One X it is going to be a disaster; social networking, using the camera, games and multimedia applications just drain the battery.

The 800x480 screen is a bit lame and it seems like a model from yesteryear. Hmmmm... The 1.2GHz quad-core CPU could be just about good enough to handle social media apps... Would it have been better to have featured a 2GHz dual-core instead or is the speed just about the same? I don’t claim to possess a great technical knowledge. For example, I think the Motorola RAZRi that features a single 2GHz CPU from Intel works surprisingly well whereas the 1.5GHz quad-core CPU in the HTC One X can be remarkably sluggish at times.

If the price is right I would gladly upgrade my HTC Desire which is practically useless for not being able to hold any apps! We'll see...

Good afternoon, Synapse Circuit Readers! The day has come... The day of the LG G2 superphone, 7 August 2013!

WOW!
LG has created a stunning handset with the G2. One of the functions, ‘Answer ME’, seems like an improvement upon the Samsung phone to ear feature where you don’t have to make a gesture to answer a call.

The slim bezel design is excellent and the idea to place the power and volume buttons on the back of the phone appears to be a good one. It remains to be seen if people will accidently switch off the phone or whack up the volume by accident.

One feature that I find outstanding is the Text Link function that can – content depending – link to the Memo and Calendar app to save going back and forth to add an event to the calendar or make a note of it. Cool!

The sound quality is in an amazing 24-bit which could have great implication for music creation apps.

THE LIVE EVENT
As it goes I thought the live event was quite good, not as outlandish as Samsung’s S4 reveal and far from contempt and self-aggrandizing that we see from Apple. However, LG has taken a leaf out of Samsung’s book in using a specific date and time to mark the launch of a product. When we think of the 3^rd of May we think of the Galaxy S3 event at London’s Earls Court but the date did change with the introduction of the Galaxy S4. 7 August 2013 is known as G2 day and I wonder if LG will keep that date for the G3. We’ll see...

It was interesting to see that LG moved away from getting too heavy with the specifications and Android to concentrate on what the G2 is capable of. We have come to expect the very best from the specifications when it comes to premium Android handsets and it’s time to concentrate on the user experience, UX. The best way to put is to quote from LG’s Dr. Jong-seok Park, “Innovation for innovation sake is old school.” It’s a subtle dig at the Samsung Galaxy S4 Air Gesture features which did not come across as disrespectful.

Towards the end the event became strangely holy with the G2 ascending to the angelic choir boy tones. It made me chuckle, but LG certainly has something to celebrate and they had better live it up while they can as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is said to be revealed in Berlin on the 3^rd September 2013 at the IFA event.

For Android fans this year couldn’t get much better!

Good early morning, Synapse Circuit Readers! 2013 is certainly the year of the Superphone! We’ve seen great offerings from Samsung, HTC and most recently, Google Motorola. And now it’s the turn of LG to take a shot at the title with their G2 which launches later today!

HERE’S THE ANTICIPATED SPEC:

With the above spec we’re looking at a challenge to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the yet unannounced Note 3. There’s no doubt that the G2 is a muscle handset and it is going to appeal to those who want the power and the glory of the phablet! I would want one!

The camera promises to be very, very useful and I can’t wait to review this one!

APPLE iPHONE?
When I see such handsets pouring out of the Android mothership the more the present iPhone sinks into oblivion. The LG G2 looks set to cause maximum damage and is a definite throw down to Samsung. If you love your muscle phones like I do then I know you want to find out about the Galaxy Note 3. Judging by the pictures above it seems as though there’s a tiny bezel on the G2 and the Note 3 is rumoured to have no bezel at all plus a few variations one of which will feature a flexible display! We all know about the race between those two technological giants to be the first to deliver a handset with the flexible display. LG is rumoured to be ready with such a handset later this year. I think most people are excited that prospect – flexible screens... Wow! Where looking at the realms of Sci-Fi! 

While the future of handsets look like a three-way battle between Samsung, LG and HTC we can’t discount what Apple will come up with! I just get the feeling that they will relent on the screen size and deliver a 4.7” screen and with a bigger screen size there will be a higher spec. I get the feeling that Apple wants to push better cameras (front and back), an improved retina display and a better design; the iPhone design hasn’t changed much at all and a new design is very likely. Watch out! Apple is desperate and desperation means danger!

Most of the innovation in smartphone / superphone comes from Android and it’s going to be interesting to see what the rest of the industry does to keep relevant.

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! What a rainy day in London... The heavens opened up and poured! But despite the rain I had a good day of rest and reading... I guess you must have heard that the President of the United States vetoed a ban on Apple products: iPhone 4 and 3G iPad 2 for infringing upon Samsung patents.

APPLE CAN DISH IT BUT THEY CAN’T TAKE IT
As you know, Apple are quick to launch patent lawsuits against the competition, namely Samsung, and does its absolute best to take competing products of the market. What many people do not realize is that Apple has been losing a few patent and copyright battles themselves. Most consumers don’t care about such details simply because, at the moment, such patent battles have not encroached upon their consumption. This makes me wonder as to how consumers were affected when Samsung tablets were taken off the market in various countries.

Here in the UK we were very fortunate in that Samsung products were never taken off the market; a British patent court ruled in favour of Samsung to say that their tablet did not infringe upon the iPad. Furthermore, Apple was ordered to retract that Samsung had infringed upon the iPad design by placing a notice on the UK Apple site to that effect. Apple couldn't hack it. And quite rightly too from the point of a megalomaniac company that creates its own propaganda machine. Apple’s penchant for denial is truly bizarre and a little frightening... ...it’s as though they can't accept that formidable competition exists. “Music music is being listened to on the iPhone...” And just for good measure... “More photos are taken on the iPhone...” Believe what you will.

RULES THAT ARE UNSPOKEN
Don't throw stones in glass houses. I don't understand how Apple can instigate patent lawsuits while they have also infringed upon the patents of others. It is certainly an odd thing to do. I guess this is the nature of tech. When, as a bully, your victims form a posse to put you in your place you have to accept it. What you don’t do is get your Mom, Pop or teacher to save you from deserved thrashing. And that’s exactly what Apple has done by getting the US President to veto the pan on iPhone 4 and iPad 2 for their infringement on Samsung’s patents. A Presidential veto is no victory for Apple. No! It’s a case of Apple not being able to take its own medicine and therefore they look simply pathetic. This is why I can’t buy into Apple. My Adorable Friend is nearly always trying to get me to buy into the Apple hype, iPhone, iPad and Mac computers and she can never give me good reason to do so. There’s no chance of it now. President Obama can step in to save a company but cannot do anything to save unarmed black children / men from being killed unlawfully by the racist “Stand your ground” law. Would that law work for a black man against a white man?

What does that veto mean for Samsung? Could they be compensated for a direct violation against Apple’s infringement against its patents? One thing is for sure, Apple does not fight fair.

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! What do you reckon now that the dust has settled on the Moto X from Google Motorola? Here’s the latest buzz...

NO UK RELEASE
Apparently Google has stated that there are no plans for the Moto X in the UK or anywhere else for that matter. Instead there will be other releases from Google Motorola intended for the overseas market. I figured that this would be the case (no pun intended) as custom Moto X’s is being sold as ‘Made in the USA’.  As you'd imagine, I am very curious as to what handset or handsets are being planned for the UK / International markets.

My thoughts on the USA only Moto X is that once it becomes a success Google will expand manufacturing to other countries. That would be great for the global economy.

ANALYSTS PREDICTIONS
Some analysts are predicting that the Moto X will not have an impact on the iPhone market. In fact they are saying that the Moto X will not be a success because of the modest spec. But I think the analysts are wrong and here’s why...

The Moto X has the right specifications for its intent; it doesn't need the quad-core muscles that you'll find in the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, etc. The spec of the Moto X is certainly better than the current iPhone 5! That said, the iPhone just goes to prove the point that today’s handset isn't all about component power. Many “analysts” have missed the point if they are concentrating on the spec alone. I think Google Motorola have got it bang on! I think the Clear Pixel camera will go down well.

Now about the Moto X not being able to sway folk away from the iPhone... I think there is a good possibility that the Moto X could eat into the iPhone cut of the smartphone market in the States (obviously) due to not only the spec but the customization feature that will give consumers a personalized experience like no other manufacturer. And let’s not forget the immense pride of American’s who will buy into the ‘Made in America’ pitch. It’s a powerful pitch. And that’s probably why the pricing is a little high to purchase SIM free; the 16GB model of the Moto X will cost you $575, while the 32GB is priced at $629. Once the Moto X takes off I am sure that the end result will be a lower price point for the second generation. Considering the iPhone 5 is manufactured cheaply in China it is so expensive for what it is. Bearing in mind that the Moto X will be competing with Google Nexus the pricing can’t directly compete. Google Motorola and Google Nexus are still separate entities.

GOOGLE NOW
The analysts are underestimating the value of the Google core apps that have recently been updated for the Chromecast dongle and for better interactivity: YouTube, Calendar, Play Music, Gmail, Maps and Google Now. I don’t think these analysts have understood that Maps alone bailed Apple out of their map fiasco and increased iPhone 5 sales as a result.

The hands free Moto X is a very attractive aspect that I am sure will sway many who are up to renew their contract. I love the idea of just being able to interface with my phone through my voice alone.

FAN BOYS & GIRLS
Some Android Fanboys have expressed their outrage that the Moto X isn't rocking Android 4.3 and I don't understand it. The Moto X will be able to upgrade in due course and I have read somewhere that the Moto X should enter the market with 4.3. I can't confirm that. However, upgrading to Android 4.3 is not an issue to worry about. Add some disappointment to the mix for the Moto X not being a muscle phone! With a teeny weenie bit of time the Android Fanboys and Fangirls will come to understand the nature of this brilliant smartphone. But having said that, the Nexus concept will take care of the consumer base that must have the latest version of Android!

THE DOMINANCE OF SAMSUNG
The analysts state that because of Samsung’s dominance on the Android market the Moto X doesn't stand a chance. I think that’s some lazy-ass analyzing! Why? Ok, I will tell you why...

Before Google acquired Motorola Samsung had a massive head start with the Galaxy S and has become the state of the art premium Android. Samsung didn't just land on the scene by luck, they worked hard! And the transition from Motorola to Google Motorola meant that there would be a calculated loss through putting out some handsets that were already on schedule. Through the eyes of the unobservant it looks as though Motorola have gone downhill with no chance of resurging. The announcement of the Moto X is also an announcement that Google are now in the driving seat. Google have been telling all who would listen that the transition for them to get into the driving seat was one that would require patience. I believe that Google Motorola has just gotten started; we are going to see a lot more in the coming months from Google Motorola. We in the UK are excited about the prospect of a new Android handset if it is not going to be the Moto X (from Google Motorola).

I think it will be difficult but not impossible for Google Motorola to come up with Android handsets that will appeal to those who would otherwise go for Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. And let’s not forget that there are many, like me, with more than one handset. So, this talk of Samsung’s dominance is quite silly. The market is open to any manufacturer to create a handset / tablet that is unique. Another important aspect is bravery in that some risk should be taken when developing handsets and that’s why Samsung have become so successful: Galaxy Note, Galaxy Camera, Galaxy S4 Zoom to name a few.

LEARNING FROM HTC
When I look at what HTC has done it is not surprising that they have problems. As you know, HTC has some of the best designed Android handsets on the market but very, very often they get the specifications completely wrong! My HTC Desire is practically useless as it can’t store decent apps these days! It’s the retro-like beauty of the design that stops it from being a doorstop. Google Motorola should observe where HTC went wrong and continues to go wrong.

In my mind HTC is constantly falling down what seems like an infinite flight of stairs; it won’t stop falling until every metaphorical bone is smashed beyond recognition. If you have been following my articles you will know that I have recently acquired the HTC One X and while it replaces my damaged Galaxy S I am not too over the Moon with it: the camera is average and the non-replaceable battery life is crap! But, hey, it looks great! Wonderful! As much as I love HTC designs it is doubtful that I would go HTC over Samsung for my premium handset in the future. But I am open to any other manufacturer given what they have to offer! I don't instantly buy from Samsung just because... Uh-uh! I weigh up what the others have to offer and make a decision. Samsung have been consistent throughout.

I know without a shadow of doubt that there is great scope for Google Motorola. Google is one maverick company that is not afraid to take chances and the ability to take chances is what will separate them (and any other manufacturer apart).

SPEC
Well, the spec contains no real surprises... There’s nothing we didn’t already know apart from the exact size of the screen, 4.7”.

SCREEN
Moto X has a 4.7” display AMOLED display with a 720p HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels) with 312ppi.

CAMERA
The 10MP camera uses a technology called Clear Pixel, which promises to let in 75 percent more light for more accurate sunlight and night time photos. Could the Clear Pixel concept be a cross between HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4? You can shake the Moto X to wake up its camera.

OPERATING SYSTEM
Motorola's X runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and not 4.3. As you'd expect, Moto X leans closer to stock Android, with three on-screen capacitive navigation controls. However, there are some elements that are all Motorola's own.

The active display element called Peek is the most obvious. Notifications pop up on the lock screen; holding the alert bubble brings up more details, like the message interior, even when the phone is locked. Sliding up opens the app.

PROCESSOR
Moto X uses the same X8 processor as Verizon's new Motorola trio. Essentially, the X8 is a mashup of a customized 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and two digital signal processors. Motorola claims this helps keep power consumption very low.

BATTERY
Motorola says the 2,200mAH battery yields 24 hours of battery life, compared to Samsung's 2,600mAh battery, which will last a full work day, but will definitely not tick on for a full trip around the clock.

Motorola has excelled at long-life batteries in its recent phones, so it's safe to expect this one to deliver.

PRICE & AVAILABILITY
Five U.S. carriers will launch with the Moto X: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. You can buy the 16 GB model in all-white or all-black in store, for $199 with a 2 year contract (T-Mobile's off-contract price will vary.)

If you're buying a custom unit through the Moto Maker Web site, you can also choose a 32GB version for $249 with a 2-year contract. Carriers will announce their exact availability for the end of August and early September range. Unlocked versions will also make an appearance in the future.

Interestingly, AT&T customers will be the U.S. users who can access Moto Maker.
