I guess you may have heard about the rumour regarding the iPhone 5C – ‘C’ standing for colour! Apparently the iPhone 5C will be aimed at the budget market and in glorious Technicolor! Ha ha! And this budget iPhone 5C will be made from the innards of the iPhone 4 and the body will be made from wonderful plastic! Hey, plastic has worked for Samsung! But somehow I imagine that the plastic used on the rumoured iPhone 5C will be of a very cheap quality – iPod material.
If you remember I correctly predicted that the iPhone 5 will be dead in the water; Apple simply got it wrong. The iPhone 5C will be wrong too; it simply is too late! Sure, there will be Apple / iPhone fans that will go for it (in small numbers) but it will cheapen the iPhone perceived notion of being reassuringly luxurious and therefore expensive.
Apple are trying so hard to get into these niche markets that Android has been able to create and sustain but they are going to have a very hard time in doing so! Take the iPad mini as an example of damned if they do and damned if they don't; that’s right, the question of adding a retina display to the darned thing! Already the iPad mini has eaten into the iPad’s market share because it is obviously cheaper. But should Apple place a retina screen on the mini then I think that iPad sales will drop like a stone!
The way Apple has positioned its brand makes it difficult for it to create products for a budget market. This is what Jobs realized and that’s why he never wanted to produce anything other than one iPhone and one iPad. But with Cook, Apple is all over the shop! Should the iPhone 5C come out it is going to make their advert that asks “If everybody is making everything then what can we make?” (I'm paraphrasing here) look hypocritical and stupid because it tries to cash in on the versatility of Android! It’s a shame for Apple fans; the better strategy for Apple would be to just up the screen size on the iPhone to 4.5”, skip 5S (if it’s on schedule) and put out iPhone 6 in two flavours: 1. The luxurious glass and aluminium. 2. Plastic for those who don’t want to pay extra for premium materials prone to dents, scratches and cracks!

I've said it once, I've said it many times, 2013 is the year of Android superphone! Just look at the great handsets that have come out already:
Samsung Galaxy S4 & Mini
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
HTC One and Mini
Google Motorola Moto X
LG G2
Then there are the smartphones from Huawei i.e. the Ascend P6 to the budget Ascend Y300! Oh, not forgetting Sony’s efforts with the Xperia Z!
How can the iPhone possibly compete?
