Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope you are in the best of health and that you are making the most out of your tech! Jeez, Louise! It is freezing cold tonight here in London – it’s minus 5! Well, I guess I should be thankful I am not in Canada for example!

Hey, are you about to upgrade? Are you thinking about the Nexus 6? Well, you are in luck! Here’s probably the best review you’ll ever read on it!

#Google #Nexus6 #In6 #Android5 #Lollipop #AndroidLollipop

THE GREATEST
Yes, the Google Nexus 6 is HUGE!!! If you are not used to a phablet it may take some getting used to – especially if you are coming off a Nexus 5 or a similarly sized handset. I am used phablets having reviewed a few in my time – notably the Galaxy Note series and the Acer Liquid S1. I personally LOVE BIG ANDROID PHONES!

If you don’t like the idea of having a phablet I really do recommend that you should try it for a couple of weeks as I am sure that by the end of week 1 you will either love it or hate it. The Galaxy Note series of handsets never disappointed because they were and still are fast! Let’s say you don’t like TouchWiz on ‘em you can use a launcher and the Galaxy Note handsets remain punchy! However, the Acer Liquid S1 wasn’t so fluid; the feeling was the opposite of what you’d imagine with the term “liquid”. Liquid Sludge 1? However, the first impression with the Nexus 6 was quite shocking in a positive way because it is greased lightning! I can understand to a degree why Android fanatics prefer a vanilla, pure un-skinned Android on their handsets! At first the Nexus 6 felt like I was trying to stand up whilst slipping on ice!

Let’s talk about the physicality and design...

LOOK & FEEL
As the Nexus 6 has been manufactured by Motorola the outlook is that of an enlarged second generation Moto X. Faced up it looks very much like what it is: a monolithic rectangular slab of onyx. At the back it has a smooth plastic back with the Motorola “M” logo circularly indented and above it is the 13MP camera lens and concentric LED flash!  Oh, below the “M” logo is the “Nexus” logo in silver. Very, Sci-Fi-like! The Nexus 6 is beautifully framed with aluminium and my midnight blue aluminium looks very otherworldly! The other colour choice is white. It looks good too!

PREMIUM BONDING
Last year I spend some time conversing with reasonable and unreasonable iPhone fanatics that are more or less justifying the high cost to them as consumers for the materials the iPhone is made out of (glass and aluminium) but I pointed out to them that these materials are subject to vulnerability. Glass shatters (as it does on all phones) and metal dents. Sensible iPhone owners place it in a protective case whereby the “beauty” is hidden and therefore it defeats the purpose.

The Nexus 6 feels very premium – even though the back is made from plastic! In other worlds Motorola has shown that a premium handset does not have to have an all metal unibody! However, it makes me ask: Why not make the back of the Nexus 6 out of aluminium since the battery cannot be removed? The answer most likely comes down to price! I look at the Galaxy Note 4 and I thank Samsung for the removable battery!

FIRST NIGGLE
The Nexus 6 should have ideally featured a removable battery! I forgot to mention that the back is curved and that will make it pretty much impossible to gesture type when it is lying flat on a surface and because the back is impractical for typing then Motorola could have made the battery removable! It’s a big handset and it would have been handy to be able to swap out the battery.

You would probably want to get a protective case for this big baby! You would want to protect the 5.96 screen and the flip case will certainly obscure the beauty of the Nexus 6 back!

SCREEN
The quad-HD screen is good but on the dull side but in the settings that can be changed by turning off “Adaptive Brightness”. That said the Adaptive Brightness setting is not as bad as I initially thought because the screen can be softened, so to speak, when watching / reading content at night with the lights off! The Galaxy Note 4 screen is the best of all the smartphones on the market today!

SONIC POWER
On the front of the Nexus 6 lays the stereo speakers that have some kick to them; they are delightfully loud and very clear! The tones are a little bit on the tinny side but you can hear bass and mid tones quite well. I call this non-symmetrical design “forehead and chin” whereby the top speaker sits at the top which is larger than the bottom of the handset where the second speaker resides – the chin!

SOME FRONT: THE FRONT-FACING CAMERA
SECOND LITTLE NIGGLE

The front-facing camera is 2MP and by today’s standards it’s quite weak! Really and truly, a handset of this stature should be fronting a 5MP at least! As it stands the 2MP is okay and is quite grainy as you can probably imagine. It’ll do for video chat and the occasional selfie! Is the 2MP a means to keep the costs down? I really don’t know... ...front-facing cameras on many handsets these days are coming in at larger MegaPixels that are quite cost effective! A little disappointed there!

When you put a handset this size in front of people you ought to go to town a bit with the hardware features and this is one area that looks like one of those muscle builders that have spent more time on the arms than the legs! Hmmmmm... Not a good look... Of course, you can’t see that from looking at the Nexus 6!

MAIN CAMERA
The main camera is 13MP and is very much similar – if not the same – as found on the second generation Moto X! The LED, as described above, is circular around the lens that should give a balanced picture.

It kinda hard and pretty much self-defeating to write reviews on a main camera... Why? I am glad you asked! I am finding that with handset cameras it is about having options in the form of predefined scenes such as:

Portrait
Sports
Night
Macro

The Nexus 6 is a pure Android experience and therefore it lacks these option modes as you will find on something like the Galaxy Note 4. It’s very odd that some reviewers complain or assert that a range of options can be a pain for the user as I find that these modes are the ones that you will find on a digital camera! For me, these modes are essential to find the right settings for the picture that I want to take!

The 13MP on the Nexus 6 is very good and it is quite fast in focusing but I feel you are going to take a bit of time to set it up in a situation... For example, it has an effective HDR+ setting that does an effective job of making a moderately unlit scene / object appear as though a flash was used. Using the flash on the same scene / object was quite good – the result wasn’t a typical wash of light; the concentric LED flash is effective!

But where the Nexus 6 13MP camera trips up is that when the light is uneven it has difficulty in finding focus. The 1080p video is very good (when the lighting is even) as is the 4K recording which takes up some serious storage. Which brings me to...

...THIRD LITTLE NIGGLE
There is no storage expansion to take advantage of the 4K video recording mode. For some reason the person behind the functionality of Android and the Nexus range of handsets, Matías Duarte, is of the opinion that a microSD card functionality confuses Nexus users that aren’t technology savvy. Something stinks about that sentiment! For a start many o’ luddites that yielded to the digital camera and I bet it didn’t take long before they were taking pictures directly to the SD card! And if the consumer ever had a handset from a manufacturer that made a microSD slot a feature then I am certain that even the most non-technical person worked out why he / she was getting “Low Memory” warnings due to not allowing the camera to take and store pictures and video directly to the microSD card! If you can read you can figure it out!

But the main reason why Google, Matías Duarte, does not want you to use a microSD card is because they (Google & Matías Duarte) want you to use Google Drive! When you use the camera for the first time it asks you if you want to start using Auto Backup to Google Cloud Drive. It does work in principal but you’d have to transfer from the internal storage to the cloud Drive. Whereas I think it would have been better to be able to record video, for example, to a high speed microSD card and transfer the recordings to Google Drive for backup! I say, “Give the consumer options!” Anyway, there are a bunch of cloud storage options from Microsoft and Dropbox. I wonder when someone will hack into a Google Drive to reveal celebrity nude photos... Hmmmmm... I wonder... Yeah, I am still the kind of person to backup the contents of my microSD card to a DVD or Bluray disc! Plus I find it so easy to insert the microSD card (with an SD card adapter) and bring a video clip into my video editor! This is why I would prefer Google and Matías Duarte to recant this “say no to microSD card” stance!

FOURTH BIG NIGGLE
Google has kindly given us a bunch of lovely productivity applications such as Doc (Word Processor), Slides (PowerPoint Presentations) and Sheets (Exel)! That’s all well and good but now that we have been enjoying full HD and now 4K video recording it is about time that Google gave us a decent video editing app! There used to be ‘Movie Studio’ but I do not see it anymore! Every time I download and install a video app I have to uninstall it because either the quality is appalling and / or it’s bloody in-app purchases! In-app purchase = dodgy. I am not saying that the makers of apps that have incentives to make you keep buying add ons are dodgy! No! I am saying, me, Synapse Circuit, that I want the option to purchase everything I need in one go! I find in-app purchasing apps annoying! You’ve paid for an app thinking, “Yes! I can get productive now!” only to find that the feature(s) come at an extra cost! Did I say I don’t like it? “I don’t like it!”

IT’S IN MY HANDS
It’s no point me telling you that I had no problems with handling the big Nexus 6, which by the way, is a little shorter than the Acer Liquid S1, because my hands aren’t the same as yours! Simple! Try telling that to Apple (yes, I am referring to the stupid iPhone ad that goes on about 4.5” being the ideal for your hand)!

You will have to use two hands to operate it, for the most part, effectively. I would certainly recommend a protective case for it as it helps to make the photo taking experience stress free from the fear of it slipping out of your hands. It’s not exactly slippery as it is such a big phone that it demands firm handling.

LOLLIPOP: ANDROID 5
WEIRDOID: Somebody told me that because of Lollipop’s use of primary colours that Android 5 is “like an operating system made for a child”. Another weird thing this somebody said, at the same time, that he took his Galaxy Note 4 back in exchange for and iPhone 6 Plus... Okay, we’ll get to those in a bit... Oooh, yes!

Personally, I think the latest version of Android, 5, Lollipop is great! I don’t mind the use of primary colours as these lovely colours look great on the big quad-HD 5.96” AMOLED screen! I love that the Google apps are colour coded! I’m a Rainbow Child! Lol! The main purpose of the operating system, if you didn’t know, is to enable the user to perform a task or tasks as quickly as possible! Android does that; it allows me to do what I want without aggravation. If I want to open up Chrome to go web surfing it just takes one click! Or let’s say I’m Facebook and I click on a link to a website: if I have another browser I am asked to make a choice of browser. I can bypass the feedback by clicking on Chrome and / or I can make going to links via Chrome, for example, permanently. With the iPhone iOS it wants me to stay in Safari! Similarly, if I wanted to share media or web link it is so very easy in Android and not so with iOS. Not to mention that Android apps have no problem taking advantage of the beautiful 5.96” quad-HD screen!

Android 5, Lollipop is, again, so very, very smooth! No lag! It’s just a satisfying operating system and is, quite rightly, the best in the world!

Oh, I did get a message to upgrade to Android 5 Lollipop 5.0.1 and I can’t say that I have experienced any bugs yet! I will look out for them! I guess there will be some bugs as you’d expect with a new operating system version like with any operating system! Google are usually quick to issue updates to correct anything major!

SHARE THE LOVE
Another great aspect of Android 5 Lollipop is that it allows you to set-up guest users to the handset, Nexus 6, and I am sure that this feature will be enabled when it reaches other devices. Anyway, if you, let’s say for example, let your child or children use your phone to play games, etc you will feel a lot better when they use it as a guest! As a result they can’t access other aspects of your phone!

“Dad, that’s not a picture of Mommy!”

“Mom! He’s half your age!”

No more of that! Hahaha!

GALAXY NOTE 4 & iPHONE PLUS 6?
Let’s get things straight!

1. Google isn’t going to put out a handset that will upset Samsung’s King of the Phablet market. The Nexus 6 doesn’t do any fanciful tricks that you will find on the irrepressible Galaxy Note 4! The Galaxy Note 4 is crazy mad with multiple windows, S Pen and heart rate monitor to say the least! The Nexus 6 is just a nice big handset to do things simply but effectively! You could say that it is pretty much like the Galaxy Note 4 stripped down with the exception of the screen as Samsung has placed the best screen on a smartphone on the Galaxy Note 4 - 5.7" 515 ppi pixel density to the Nexus 6 5.96" 493 ppi pixel density! You do notice a difference when placed side by side but that is the, some would say, oversaturated nature of Samsung’s premium handsets! Still, the Nexus 6 screen is a joy!

2. The Nexus 6 is a totally different handset to the iPhone 6 Plus! Different operating systems, different ecosystems and the Nexus 6 outclasses the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of design. Come on... ...I know you’d jump off a cliff for Tim Cook and friends but before you go you have to acknowledge the quad-HD screen on the Nexus 6! Good! Then there are the gorgeous front-facing stereo speakers! Android 5, Lollipop just flows... ...it allows you to do what you want when you want! Again, it features productivity apps that output to Mac and PC compatible software formats so you are not a slave to these computing platforms! I do think that Android is better than iOS! Look! I am, when I am not writing, a consumer. I have tried the iPhone and it doesn’t resonate with me. As much as I do appreciate the snappiness of the operating system I do find that it betrays the idea productivity when it locks you into the Apple (iTunes & Safari) experience!

I know that I can watch a 4K video on YouTube on my Nexus 6 and Galaxy Note 4. Can I do this on the iPhone 6 Plus?

GEE, TOUCHWIZ
As much as I LOVE pure Android it doesn’t mean to say that I don’t appreciate TouchWiz! Again, if it weren’t for Samsung, Android wouldn’t have taken to the mainstream like it has! Samsung has taken Android and has done marvellous things with it! Let me put it another way...

When I am using my Galaxy Note 2, 4 and Galaxy S4 my mindset adjusts to what these beasts can do! And when I am using the Nexus 6 I adjust to what it is about. In fact, because the second generation Moto G is like a Nexus 6 mini I don’t have any issues at all with the Nexus 6. Yes, the second generation Moto G Android 4.4.4 isn’t all that different from Lollipop; one of the things that Android 4.4.4 doesn’t have is the tabs when multitasking.

Pure Android & TouchWiz are like Yin & Yang. But that is my take on it! If you have tried a Samsung handset and did not like the TouchWiz overlay then I am sure that you will be bowled over by Android 5 Lollipop!

CONCLUSION
The battery life is good but, as you know, when you start to use any handset the battery soon drains! So, if you are an intensive user i.e. you watch a lot of videos, play lots of these big 3D games, take pictures, etc you will find that you can get a day’s usage out of it! I do think that Google, Motorola (now Lenovo Motorola) should put out a compatible USB power pack that we connect to Motorola devices such as the Nexus 6. Yes, there are USB power packs out there but I only trust gear for use with my handsets if they come recommended by the manufacturers! Me? If it was the Galaxy Note 4 I’d buy another battery! That’s the thing to consider if the Nexus 6 is going to be your main handset! Dare I say it but as Android 5 Lollipop keeps getting updated it could improve the battery life!

The battery charger that it comes with enables fast charging. However, as soon as you start using the handset the battery drains just as quickly! So, put it on charge for a couple of hours or so! I have found that the longer you leave the Nexus 6, when you first get it, to charge the longer the duration! You will do well to download a battery management app just so you know when the Nexus 6 has charged up fully! It features a battery saving mode that practically turns of all the apps in the background i.e. your apps won’t sync so don’t get to receive message and email notifications, for example, until you open these applications. Hmmmm... I am not too sure about that... I think Motorola ought to give us that USB battery pack! Lol!

I LOVE the Nexus 6 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic big quad-HD screen handset for both productivity and leisure!

6 REASONS TO GET THE NEXUS 6

1. If you are a fan of Blade Runner the movie the Nexus 6 shares its name with a superior batch of humanoid androids known as Replicants. Now that the silly-cool reason is out of the way...

2. Android 5 Lollipop in its purest! It is beautiful! Wonderful responsiveness! I reckon Usain Bolt will have a bit of trouble keeping up with it!

3. The awesome quad-HD screen is great for video, web surfing, game playing and productivity!

4.
If you are making music using Caustic or G-Stomper Studio you are going to LOVE the front-facing stereo speakers!

5. The Guest User mode is great!

6. The overall design and build is solid! No! The back of my Nexus has not come undone! Unlike the iPhone the Android handset designs keep getting better and the Nexus 6 is a great example!

So, there you have it!

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers. How’s it going? I hope is well and that you are on the up and up!

If you’re an Android fan / user it is very likely that you are on an all-time high what with the imminent release of Android 5 Lollipop (if your handset is at least 2 to 3 years old) and the latest Nexus models.

THERE’S NO COMPETITION!

GOOGLE ISN’T INTERESTED IN WAR...
...THE LAZY TECH-MEDIA DON’T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT FACT!
That’s right! Google is not interested in having a tech-war with those that see themselves as ‘competition’. They never have been interested in participating in a tech-war; how the press love a war as it makes for easy headlines! Funnily enough, war can make for revolution! Anyhoo... CEO, Larry Page has made it very, very clear that Google is interested in reaching out and assisting humanity! Having a war with Apple, Microsoft, etc plays no part in assisting humanity!

Google has also made it clear that it doesn’t see the smartphone has having the same significance as it did when it made its debut, 16 August 1994. And as a result, Google has been pioneering new technologies such as Glass. Google have delivered on its promise on cost effective handsets with the Nexus range up to version 5 – arguably! Nexus 6 is something else! It’s super-premium in my books! Under Motorola, Google have gone even further and has smashed the smartphone phenomena with the release of the Moto G handset! In my mind the iPhone makes a lot of sense for Mac computer users but if you don’t have a Mac and want a cost effective premium smartphone the Moto G – especially the 5” second generation version is definitely one excellent way to go! The short review of the Moto G second generation handset is as follows:-

MOTO G 2014, 8GB. PRICE: £150
It’s a fantastic 5” handset that seems smaller due to its form factor emanating from true innovative design values. The two front-facing speakers sound quite punchy and very satisfying to the ears.

The 8GB of phone memory is enough to hold what I call the base apps: Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Viber, LINE, etc. Not forgetting the Google staple: Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, etc. In addition there is 1GB of RAM which makes for a remarkably smooth interface experience driven by a quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU! It is really, really good!

The Moto G features this time around a 5” screen with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and 294 ppi pixel density which is a bit of a downgrade compared to last years 4.5” of the same resolution but with a sharper 326 ppi pixel density. That’s the small price we pay for the 5” screen which I prefer; the screen is still sharp and text is very, very legible.

The camera has been upgraded from 5MP to 8MP which is more than good enough for the purpose of updating your social network platforms. There’s also an LED flash too! The video records up 720p at 30 frames per second. The front-facing camera is 2MP that will ensure that you can make video calls!

The operating system is the latest version of KitKat 4.4.4 and it will be receiving the Lollipop 5 upgrade! Yay! There’s no additional UI interface overlay i.e. a skin such as Samsung TouchWiz or HTC Sense; it’s pure Android! I do appreciate the pure vanilla Android experience. I can understand why Samsung uses the TouchWiz on its premium handsets as they want to exploit its technologies such as the S Pen functionality on the Galaxy Note series of handsets. But there is no excuse why other manufacturers should feel the need to stick a user interface overlay on top of what is already a great operating system. I do hope that Android 5 will change all that.

The battery cover is removable but the 2070 mAh battery is not. However, this model can utilize two micro SIM cards and a microSD card up to 32GB! Cool! Here’s what has just come into my mind...

Why is it not possible for apps to run from the microSD card?
If Google could change Android so that it will allow apps to run from a microSD card would it make sense to feature two microSD slots because the 8GB model, as reviewed here, really allows for around 5GB to store your apps (and media)? I reckon Android handsets could come with 4GB to hold the operating system and Google apps while the two microSD slots will function to hold apps and media. Just an idea! I know Google aren’t too keen on microSD for reasons best known to the person(s) behind that aspect of it.

IN USE
I’ve had my Moto G second generation for a few weeks and I can attest to a battery life on standby but, as always, usage is a different matter altogether! I get away with a day of moderate use i.e. YouTube, taking pictures and surfing the web! I really love that the handset is quite thick in comparison to most premium Android handsets, 11mm! The thickness makes the handset easy to hold when using the camera for example! The curved battery cover makes it fit perfectly into the hand! The power button and volume rocker feels solid to the touch!

CONCLUSION
As far as I am concerned this is the “budget” handset to beat! Because of the large 5” screen and the front-facing speakers being well placed I don’t pay any real attention to the plastic battery cover; we mostly interface with the screen and therefore we shouldn’t be too bothered what the back is made of. Sure, it would have been a bonus if the battery was removable but I’ve no complaints about the battery with my usage. Bear in mind that Android 5 utilizes a battery saving function called ‘Volta’ that promises we’ll get more usage out of our handsets.

The Moto G feels robust and the screen is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 3! The rounded edges reminds me very much of the Galaxy Nexus and it is aesthetically pleasing.

As you know, there are many, many budget Android handsets out there that – in my humble opinion – shouldn’t. Why? Thank you for asking! It’s because that quite a lot of sub £150 handsets offers a poor hardware specification i.e. 512MB RAM, single-core CPU and 4GB of storage which results in a very slow handset that you will end up throwing against the wall!

SCORE: PLATINUM
Had Motorola imbued the second generation Moto G with 4G LTE it would have scored double platinum! However, 4G LTE is said to cause battery drainage and looking at it from another perspective: how many of us tend to update apps via 3 or 4G? I tend to update my apps on my home Wi-Fi before I leave the house. I also have a 4G Mi-Fi device for my tablet which I can use with my Moto G! 4G isn’t really that much of an issue. Besides, I think 4G makes more sense when you have unlimited data to exploit. There’s no point having 4G, in my humble opinion, and you can’t feel comfortable using it with the fear of using up your data. That said, the Moto G makes it easy to purchase a decent handset outright and go for a good SIM only deal that can include unlimited data! There could be a 4G Moto G second generation in the pipeline – probably in time for Christmas!

And if you need the speed of 4G LTE then the first generation Moto G 4G 4.5” represents exceptional value!

THE KEY
What I have come to appreciate about Google these days is that it doesn’t feel the need to host a keynote with every release; a press release is enough and it does the job of instilling not just excitement but record sales! When the Nexus 5 reached the UK retail outlets it had sold out on day one! But no self-aggrandizing keynotes espousing record this and record that. Google Motorola just said, “Here’s a great handset that is the Nexus 6 and you are also going to love the Nexus 9 tablet and the Nexus Player...”

In comparison to those other guys it is quite apparent that people are ridding themselves of a bad purchase!  One can argue that such a thing wouldn’t have happened under Steve Jobs but the point is that Apple seems to be floundering at the moment and its super-in-denial-PR-machine cannot cover-up that fact. Apple Pay??? Twice??? Uh-uh! C’mon, we know that the Apple Watch isn’t a great design.

The iPhone 6 and Plus models just do not feel like premium handsets when they are in my hands. Seriously, my Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S4 feel like serious premium handsets because they are! And having had the Galaxy Note 4 in my hands is such a gratifying feeling.

Above: Getting rid! The iPhone 6 and Plus aren't happening. Jeez, Louise! Look at the prices! £760??? C'mon...

THE NEXUS 6

I would imagine that the Nexus 6 – if the Moto G and X are anything to go by – will feel smaller in the hands. The Moto G (second generation) feels like the ideal size as does the Moto X. But then so does the Galaxy Note 2, 3 and 4 feel comfortable in the hands! I reckon that it’s just down to the design. The Nexus 6 looks every bit as wonderful as the aforementioned Moto models and I am betting that most people will get used to it very, very quickly!

Again, the iPhone 6 Plus just does not feel right to me. I think it is too thin and slippery. And I really do not like iOS – version 8 has proved to be troublesome! In contrast I am so glad that Google didn’t try to qualify for the thinnest handset award and Lollipop, Android 5 looks sweet!

The Nexus 6 may seem the opposite of Google’s budget ethos but you are getting one heck of a handset as a result! I would imagine that one would get it on contract instead of purchasing it outright. There’s always the Nexus 5! But I am a little surprised that Google didn’t reveal a smaller, 5” perhaps, Nexus 6 alternative. Oh, well! Me? I would want the Nexus 6 as it is!

NEXUS 9
Foolishly, I see many tech-media claiming that the Nexus 9 is aimed at “taking on the iPad...” However, the Nexus 9 is an Android tablet aimed at Android users! It’s so simple to understand but anything for a cheap headline. If Google had installed iOS 8 on the Nexus 9 then it would be competing against the iPad.

In the wake of the Nexus 9 the Apple biased media are claiming the iPad Air 2 is the fastest iPad ever! It could very well be but will speed stop the iPad from tanking? How many tablets does Apple have on the market now? Whereas the Nexus 7 has come in at a competitive price point and that the second generation still offers great value for money if you want a small tablet. Not to mention a plethora of cost effective Android tablets from a host of manufacturers. Maybe Apple would be able to sell iPads if they made an Android version!

As it stands, the Nexus 9 looks like a great advancement for the Android platform. I wonder how many folk realize that the only way to access specific tablet apps is to get a tablet! I am embarrassed to say that it’s through reviewing a tablet that I got to realize this.

NEXUS PLAYER

In comparison to Chromecast, Nexus Player looks like an even smarter way to enjoy media and games on the TV as opposed to streaming material from a handset or tablet. The Nexus Player could very well be the replacement to cable TV we’ve been looking for! There are no details as of yet for availability in the UK! I suspect we’re looking at a price between £80 and £100. It has its own 1.8GHz quad-core processor and that means gaming for the gamers! A smoother delivery of media in general! I like the Voice Control aspect on the remote control. If it comes to the UK market in time for Christmas I think it’ll sell like hotcakes along with cost effective TVs! I get the impression that Nexus Player will transform a TV into a smart one! It’s most definitely on my Christmas list!

INBOX
Yes, this is a new email management app that is going to change the way we access our emails. It’s such a well thought out app that is currently invitation only! Just like it was with Gmail initially, Inbox will gradually be ubiquitous!

I wonder if, through Gmail soon to be compatible with other email clients i.e. Yahoo, Inbox will be able to deal with any email coming through... In other words: Does Inbox serve only Gmail? And when Gmail is updated with other emailing client compatibility will Inbox filter / manage them too?

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT APPLE TALK 11 KEEP CALM iPHONE 6 AND iPAD AIR

CEX CHANGE: iPhone 6 and Plus.
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE TALK 11:

APPLE...
...
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!

What’s going on with Apple? Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope that all is well with you and that you are making great progress with your projects! Send me a link via G+! I am very interested in what you are doing!

Do you know what to make of Apple these days? Me? I am not so sure... I know, I know... ...you as an Apple fanatic is thinking, ‘Let the Apple bashing begin...’ But I can honestly say that I don’t get Apple at all. Here are my latest thoughts on Apple...

#Apple #Samsung #Google #SteveJobs #TimCook #iPhone6 #iPhone6Phablet #iPhone6Plus #AppleWatch #GalaxyNote4 #GalaxyAlpha #GalaxyNoteEdge #GalaxyTabS #Nexus9 #iPadAir2 #iPadMini3

PRETENCE?
As someone who appreciates technology I can see that the latest iPhones aren’t as advanced as expected. As someone who appreciates design I can see that the iPhones aren’t exciting where design is concerned. Believe it or not I am always looking for a reason to buy into other competing technologies outside of Android and I’ve yet to see an iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows handset that make me say, “I must have this!” One of the Nokia Windows handsets almost had me there!

I UNDERSTAND...
Yes, as an Apple fan I expect you to upgrade your iPhone despite the lack of advancement – barring the 64-bit processor – that is prevalent upon the Android platform. C’mon, whether you hate (and ‘hate’ is a strong word) Android and the various manufacturers you have to admit – at least to yourself – that Android handsets and tablets are better designed and the technology is constantly getting better what with 64-bit processors coming to Android devices this year notably the Google Nexus 9 tablet manufactured by HTC! Just looking at the high-end Android devices from Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC, Huawei, etc you can see instantly that so much work as been put into the design of such great handsets:-

Galaxy Note 4
Nexus 6
Moto X 2014
Ascend Mate 2
G3
One M8

BUT IF YOU HAVEN’T BOUGHT INTO APPLE...
In other words you don’t have a MAC computer and you want to own what is arguably the “best” easy to use smartphone in the world and you’ve opted for the iPhone 6 range. Upon closer inspection you notice some discrepancies that you can’t tolerate and that’s why you’ve gotten rid of it. Discrepancies such as the cheap feel of the build – it doesn’t look or feel “premium” and the problems that have come with iOS 8.

UNPRECEDENTED
These are austere times and we can forget this fact upon the release of a new device. We quickly jump on the bandwagon and it quickly becomes apparent it’s a device one can do without, so it’s ‘Hello pawnshop’! And, of course, we sometimes purchase a device only to discover that it’s a disappointment.

However, it is unprecedented that there are so many iPhone 6 and Plus models in the Computer Exchange stores in London. A few weeks ago I got a shock to see so many on display! Only days after the iPhone 6 models were available in the Apple stores many of them have ended up in these secondhand / pawn shops!

What’s going on? When I read and watch the reviews on the iPhone 6 models the reviewers seem less than satisfied with the overall experience. Reviewers all seem to be saying that the best improvement is the battery, camera and media consumption on the bigger screen. And when the iPhone 6 Plus is compared to the Galaxy Note 4 many reviewers foolishly state that the multi-screen functions is “difficult” compared to the simplicity of the way the iPhone works. Seriously! What was the point in such reviews? The Galaxy Note 4 is so very easy to operate that you must have had a lobotomy to not be able to figure it out! These so called reviewers mask out the negatives of the iPhone 6 models by creating problems that do not exist with the competition i.e. (the aforementioned) Galaxy Note 4. Sure, when it comes to the quality of the iPhone 6 camera it may still hold its own against the premium Android handsets but in some of the tests that I have seen the reviewer doesn’t appear to have used the camera functions / settings on the competing handsets beyond HDR. Again, the iPhone biased reviewers concentrate on the iPhone 6 and Plus cameras to mask the fact that the competing Android handsets have more to offer all-round! For example, the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 4 makes it one of the most versatile handsets on the planet! The Galaxy Note 4 goes beyond being “big”.

iPAD UP IN THE AIR
Just last week Apple announced the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and the iMac with the 5K Retina display! I can understand why Apple felt the need to whack a whopping 5K on its new iMac because “Retina” had lost its value where the Android premium handsets and tablets are concerned; a 5K screen is one way to try and revive the Retina concept.

The notion of “Retina” on the iPad mini 3 seems like a waste of time as does the iPad Air 2 for the simple fact that the iPad has lost its commercial appeal; people aren’t in a hurry to replace their old iPad models because it’s not necessary. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! The latest iPads doesn’t bring anything vital to the proceedings! This is one reason why the iPad market is in decline.

Other reasons for the iPad tanking is that it cannot compete with many ranges of Android tablets on the market today – some of which offers 4G LTE at such an affordable price! Some 7” Android 4G / 3G enabled tablets allows you to make and receive phone calls! Gosh!

And for the Apple fanatic, the iPhone 6 Plus will certainly eat into iPad sales! I would imagine that the money saved will go towards the iMac! It makes sense to me!

Then when you look at the overseas emerging markets i.e. Third World countries the iPad just isn’t cost effective and loses out to Chromebooks and cost effective Android tablets!

It remains to be seen if the iPad will find a new lease of life as a business accessory as some of the Android tablets have.

There you go!

That’s something to think about!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

NEXUS 6 FROM GOOGLE AND MOTOROLA: MORE ANDROID. MORE SCREEN. MORE EVERYTHING.
#AndroidLollipop #Android #Motorola #Google #Nexus6 #AndroidAuto #AndroidTV #Chromecast #Glass #Nexus #Silver #Lollipop #Android5 #Android5Lollipop

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers. I hope you have been enjoying my latest news and reviews! More coming soon! Here’s an update to the Synapse Circuit Lollipop news!

More to rejoice over!

GIGANTIC BIG, BIG LOVE FROM GOOGLE & MOTOROLA!

SIZE DOES MATTER... BUT IT’S NOTHING WITHOUT ANDROID – LOLLIPOP TO BE PRECISE! SUCK ON THAT, APPLE! HA HA!

Shucks! I am just kiddin’! Don’t have a meltdown, Apple Fans! Wink, wink!

London, 15th October 2014 - At Motorola we’ve been big believers in Android since the very beginning. We love its power, its flexibility, and how it gives you the freedom to choose the experience that’s right for you. In fact, the only thing that would be better than Android is...more Android. That’s why we’re so excited to have been able to work with Google’s Android team to bring you the new Nexus 6, featuring Android 5.0 Lollipop.

With Nexus 6, we’ve worked with Google to bring you a bigger phone with more everything. More screen. More speed. More power. And, it’s the best Android experience ever with:

More room to view: With a six-inch Quad HD display, Nexus 6 is great for watching, reading, playing and doing.

More doing, less charging: An around-the-clock 3220 mAh battery gets you through your day and more. Plus, the included Motorola Turbo Charger gives you a quick burst of power when your battery needs it the most. All it takes is 15 minutes to get up to an additional 6 hours of battery life.

More epic shots: The 13 megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilisation and automatic HDR+ lets you take your best possible photos with the least possible effort.

More sound in stereo: With dual front-facing stereo speakers, you’ll get an immersive stereo sound that is great for experiencing music, movies and games as you should.

More with Lollipop: Nexus 6 comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop - a sweet new take on Android. Android Lollipop introduces Material Design so that content responds to your touch, or even your voice, in more intuitive ways, and transitions between tasks are more fluid. Plus, new call and message notifications allow you to act on (or dismiss) them without interrupting what you’re doing.

Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order through the Google Play Store in late October. There are two colours to choose from - Midnight Blue or Cloud White - and two memory options - 32GB and 64GB. Nexus 6 will also be available on motorola.co.uk and through carrier partners starting in November. You’ll hear from our carrier partners soon with additional pricing and availability information. In all, Nexus 6 will come to 28 countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America starting later this year and as we head into Q1.

NEXUS 6 IS A BEAST OF A HANDSET!!!
I LOVE IT!!!

MY SWEET LOLLIPOP! ANDROID 5 IS HERE!
#AndroidLollipop #Android #NexusPlayer #NexusTablet #AndroidWear #AndroidAuto #AndroidTV #Chromecast #Glass #Nexus #Silver #Lollipop #Android5 #Android5Lollipop

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers. It is great to see you as always! I guess you are buzzing from the knowledge that Android 5, “Lollipop”, is now official as well as the latest Nexus devices!

Rejoice!

IT’S A MATERIAL WORLD!

Above: The Nexus 6 which is said to be coming in black and white. It looks great; big without being cumbersome. I love this dual front-facing speaker design! I can't wait to get this in my hands! There is no way that Android fans are going to defect to the iPhone 6 Plus because of the size alone. Android 5 Lollipop is gonna take some licking! Wink, wink...

 ANDROID MATERIAL

While some have an opinion as to what goes into a “premium” handset it has become very, very clear – judging by some hiccups with iOS 8 – that the most important aspect is the operating system! I have always said that Android is second to none and this was abundantly clear from the recent Google i / O conference in June! We got a glimpse of the future and this future has arrived for us lovers of technology!

Google promises that Android 5, Lollipop (I was right about the name) will give the user up to 90 minutes of more battery time and that it should be small enough to fit on many older devices! Hurrah! So, it is hopeful that many handsets and tablets will be receiving an upgrade at some point. Hmmmm, I don’t know how that bodes with rooted handsets as Cynogenmod appears to be stuck on KitKat for some reason... We’ll see...

What I have appreciated about Google is that it is running its own race; Google do not seem to be directly competing with Apple or Mircrosoft... Google are focused upon its idea of the future and the proof is in the products. If one takes the time to create great products then it is highly likely that people will want to buy into them. Also, bear in mind that Google wants to reach folks across the various platforms. Android 5, Lollipop is going to span across various platforms so there is a great potential for more devices that work with what we have already!

EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING

"The Nexus 6. This new phone has a contoured aluminium frame, a 6-inch Quad HD display and a 13 megapixel camera. The large screen is complemented by dual front-facing stereo speakers that deliver high-fidelity sound, making it as great for movies and gaming as it is for doing work. It also comes with a Turbo Charger, so you can get up to six hours of use with only 15 minutes of charge..."

That's awesome! I do love my large screen handsets and this could very well be my next handset! It's made by Motorola and the Moto G 2014 is sweet! The review is coming soon! I got myself the second generation Moto G specifically for the Lollipop update! I want to experience Android 5 in all its pure glory! I also hope to get a review of the Nexus 6 out to you soon!

"Next, a new tablet built in partnership with HTC. Nexus 9, with brushed metal sides and 8.9-inch screen, is small enough to easily carry around in one hand, yet big enough to work on. And since more and more people want to have the same simple experience they have on their tablets when they have to do real work, we designed a keyboard folio that magnetically attaches to the Nexus 9, folds into two different angles and rests securely on your lap like a laptop..."
Wow! I am loving it! I was unsure about the partnership with HTC at first but this tablet sounds ace! It certainly looks great and there is a uniformity in terms of the design as it resembles the Nexus 6!

"Finally, we’re releasing the first device running Android TV: Nexus Player, a collaboration with Asus, is a streaming media player for movies, music and videos. It's also a first-of-its-kind Android gaming device. With Nexus Player you can play Android games on your HDTV with a gamepad, then keep playing on your phone while you're on the road. Nexus Player is Google Cast Ready so you can cast your favorite entertainment from almost any Chromebook or Android or iOS phone or tablet to your TV..."

The Nexus Player is an exciting product as you know that I am dissatisfied with my cable service of crap TV channels. I am looking forward to hooking up this device to my HDTV!

"Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will be available for pre-order on October 17 and in stores starting November 3. Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order in late October and in stores in November—with options for an unlocked version though Play store, or a monthly contract or installment plan through carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon. Specific carrier rollout will be subject to certification completion and will vary. Check out google.com/nexus for more details on availability..."

This is great news - especially for my US friends! I can't wait to learn the details of the European release.

"Android 5.0 Lollipop, which comes on Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, will also be available on Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks..."

Fantastic news for owners of the above products! Yes! However, Motorola has issued a statement to say that the Lollipop upgrade is coming to the following handsets:-
Moto X (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.)
Moto G (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.)
Moto G with 4G LTE
Moto E
Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini

Too bad about the Motorola RAZRi as I am very sure that there is a possibility there that Lollipop is small enough to be installed on that handset. I am very curious to find out if Lollipop could improve the fluidity of the RAZRi as it has become quite sluggish. Still, it's good to know that the latest Motoroloa Moto models (along with the Droid handsets) will be getting the upgrade! It is going to be a superlative time for Android and the mobile device industry in general! Watch this space for more commentary, reviews, competitions, etc!

5... ANDROID 5 IS ALIVE!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT ANDROID TALK NEXUS 6

Above: On the right is the LG G3 and on the left is the forthcoming Nexus 6 / X.
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
ANDROID TALK 3:
NEXUS 6 OR X, HTC NEXUS TABLET & ANDROID 5

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? How’s it going? I hope you are well and making great progress with your tech – especially if you are embarking upon a project using your mobile device applications and computer software! Did I tell you that I have now joined the Android tablet ranks? Well, I have! I will post up a review shortly! Watch this space for my reveal...

Ooooh, yes! It’s now the first day of October and you know what that means? Absolutely! That’s right... ...we are closer to the next Google Nexus range of toys: phone(s) and tablet(s) to usher in the next version of Android!

#Android #Google #HTC #LG #ASUS #Samsung #Sony

NEXUS 6 OR X

"Shamu! Hee hee..." Bad Michael Jackson joke...

What can I tell you that you haven’t already discovered through a web search on the subject of “Nexus 6 (X)”? Nothing other than I am looking forward to the reveal! These days I prefer not to do too much searching for clues and leave some space to be surprised. I don’t know about you but I do get tired of feeling disappointed after a massive build up! Hahahaha!

The one interesting aspect that I would like to mention is that it appears as though Motorola is manufacturing the next Nexus; “6”? I would like to think that it’ll be called Nexus 6 regardless of the biological Androids featured in the classic Sci-Fi movie ‘Blade Runner’. A mobile phone is different from a movie character and this shouldn’t present a potential litigation problem, right? This situation reminds me of when ASUS were being sued over the “Transformer” name! Pathetic! ASUS won by the way! Yay!

The Nexus 6 may be the penultimate design and release from Google Motorola before the baton is passed over to Lenovo! When Google first acquired Motorola I thought that one of the first things they would have done is the Nexus 5 but it still worked out great for LG! From what little I have seen the Nexus 6 looks very much like a bigger Moto X which is fine by me! If you haven’t heard the latest whispers the Nexus 6 may come at a nice 5.9” screen size. What? Too big? Not for me! The other whisper is that there will be a smaller version at 5.2”. I guess like the iPhone 6 situation! I am curious if the Nexus 6 model(s) will feature a 64-bit chip as my hope is that Google will show off the 64-bit enabled Android with style!

As I stated earlier, I haven’t bothered to look for “spec leaks” but logic tells me that the imminent Nexus 6 is going to be a great contender – more so than usual! I can’t say that I care too much if it’s 64-bit because a premium Android is blazing fast and, apparently, at least 4GB of RAM is needed to take advantage of the 64-bit chip architecture. I can’t confirm this repeated notion.

HTC NEXUS TABLET

Again, like the handset I have vague details such as the codename: “Volantis” and that it’s either a 9” or 8.9” in screen size. Oh, there is a strong rumour that it will feature a 64-bit Snapdragon CPU! The 64-bit CPU wouldn’t surprise me as HTC is said to be in the process of releasing a 64-bit handset shortly! We’ll see!

It’ll also be great if ASUS was still in the game to produce the 7” Nexus tablet as it’s still a handy size. Despite the iPad market in continual freefall the Android tablet market is still vital! Why? If you have been following my articles on the subject of the tablet market you will know why Android tablets will continue to flourish! But if you haven’t been following my articles... ...here goes...

1. The Android operating system, unlike Windows and OS X, is not cut from a desktop operating system. Therefore there is no hardware to cannibalize as with the iPad Air cannibalizing the Macbook Air for example. In theory, because Android 5 will be compatible across different CPU architectures there is a possibility for an Android based desktop and the 64-bit tablet could very well be what Microsoft is trying to achieve with the Surface tablet; great idea that comes at a great price – so much so that a decent laptop is preferable!

2. Cost! The Android tablet comes in at different price levels to serve entertainment / social media, basic productivity to high end productivity.

3. The 3G / 4G enabled tablet has become the new “phablet” and it is just a matter of time before the UK (that’s where I am based) and International networks allow us to use standard phone SIMs. At the moment it’s either the Internet (data) or call / text limits. Not good! But one can use either a main handset as personal Wi-Fi hotpot (tethering) or a dedicated Mi-Fi device to keep you connected on the go!

4. Because Google Play is being populated with quality applications specifically for the tablet it means that it has yet to peak! Whereas with the iPad it has gotten to a point whereby you may as well add a bit extra and get a Macbook Air because there is no longevity in the iPad; next year your expensive purchase is outdated already! You are better off using software as opposed to apps. The iPhone 6 Plus will most likely eat into the iPad market.

Android tablets of today has longevity built into them as the operating system becomes highly optimized and remember that Android devices over the last 2 years is blessed with decent hardware; there is a good chance that the 2013 Nexus 7, for example, will be able to upgrade to the latest operating system (Android 5). I would imagine that a top notch tablet that is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S range will last a good while! Just look at the Nexus 10 – it has stood the test of time!

5. Combining the points above, the Android tablet can be an inexpensive sketchpad of sorts that compliments a PC / MAC computer as the files produced on an Android tablet is compatible. It’s so easy to put the 7” Android tablet / phablet in a jacket / coat pocket and be productive on a bus journey for example. It’s not as precious as an iPad where you might feel uncomfortable showing it off in public – especially in London where crime is rife!

There you have it! There will come a time whereby we will stop using a PC or MAC desk or laptop as the Android apps have a greater potential fulfil our needs as we continue to embrace digital formats. It’s funny... I have seen apps that create physical greetings and postcards; why not just send the postcard digitally? We already do with WhatsApp and LINE. Why waste a tree for the purpose of such folly? It is Android that has given us a great range of cost effective handsets and tablets that everyone on the planet should have one by now! I love it that I can send a picture, video, recorded voice message, etc to anyone in the world! Okay, I have to admit to enjoying sending and receiving Christmas cards as such items become part of the decorations. Other than that the greetings and postcards are practically dead or dying! The cost of the domestic printer ought to come down somewhat! I digress slightly... ...as usual!

My jury is out on HTC manufacturing the next Nexus tablet as I feel that it hasn’t delivered the goods where the handset is concerned. Yes, the One (M7 & 8) are great looking handsets but the cameras let them down. The One isn’t complete as the Galaxy S4 & 5 is where the camera is concerned. Sure, the Galaxy S range looks minimal in comparison but the handsets deliver all-round! HTC has got to be on top of its game for the Nexus tablet and I hope they turn its fortunes around big time! HTC reminds me of none other than Rocky Balboa in that they keep taking knocks but come back with something potentially brilliant! C’mon, HTC!

THE MOTOROLA NEXUS TABLET?
I don’t know about you but I hoped that Motorola would get back into the tablet arena. Isn’t funny how circumstance can create the most amazing phenomena? From what I have understood early versions of Android could only support a low resolution and as a result that gave us the 7” tablet! Typically, Jobs laughed at the very idea of a 7” tablet made it clear that there would never a 7” iPad. Derisively, Jobs stated that tablet apps were nothing but stretched out phone apps. So, Google responded with Honeycomb, Android 3. Motorola put out the XOOM 10.1” tablet to mixed reviews followed by the XOOM 2. If I remember correctly there was some dispute with the “XOOM” name and along with the idea that Android wasn’t quite ready for a large tablet Motorola pulled the plug on its tablet range.

My how times have changed! I hope that Motorola will design and produce the Moto Nexus Pad X (???); I envisage that this tablet or set of tablets could be aimed at the mid-range with competitive pricing. I feel that the Moto X and G ranges are missing a tablet counterpart! So, the Nexus 6 phablet makes a great deal of sense. I feel that there is room for a nice 7” Moto Nexus tablet with slim bezels and that dual front-facing speaker design that is working well for Motorola right now! I reckon it’d be something if there was a 3G and / or 4G version(s) with a dual SIM slot enabling calls and data as Android folk are gravitating towards bigger handset screens. I don’t know about you but I LOVE these huge screens as it makes the consumption of media, surfing the Net and productivity such much better!

I guess I am dreaming – again! But that would be such a higher note (no pun intended) for Google Motorola to go out on before handing over the reins to Lenovo! All the best to Lenovo! Anyhoo... ...by all accounts the legacies of the Moto X, G and E is such a brilliant achievement! Just when you thought that Motorola weren’t happening! After the RAZRi the Moto X, G and E constitutes of a great return to form! And let’s not forget the customization of the Moto X by being able to choose from a great range of colours and unique materials such as bamboo and leather for the battery cover! Awesome! Oh, and the Moto 360 smartwatch! I must review the Moto 360 asap!

ANDROID 5: LOLLIPOP?

My girl lollipop...

Now the rumour is that Android 5 will be called Lollipop as opposed to Lemon Meringue Pie which was looking very likely... ...in any event I can’t wait to experience the game changer that is Android 5! Google appears to have taken its time with getting the next version of Android right. I am quite sure that if Google followed Apple’s enthusiasm for jumping from iOS version 6, 7 to 8 with minor improvements I reckon we’d have reached Android 10 by now. And look at how iOS 8 has been plagued with inconsistencies... ...this is not to say that this can’t happen to Android but I get the feeling that Google have been putting Android 5 through the wringer!

I have understood that Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 4 will get the Android 5 upgrade towards the end of the year! Hurrah! Fingers crossed on that one! I do find myself wondering as to how far back can Android 5 go... Will it be possible for the Galaxy S4 and Note 2 / 3, for example, to get the update?

And if you are using a Cyanogenmod ROM on some of your handsets when will the Cyanogenmod guys have CM12 (Android 5) ready for installation?

One thing is for sure: Thanks to Google, Android and the awe inspiring manufacturers we get another Christmasesque experience! Bring it!

That’s something to think about!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT APPLE TALK THE FALLOUT 2

Above: The iPhone 6C - not!
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE TALK:
THE FALLOUT 2

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers. How are you? How was your day? Ready for the Bank Holiday Carnival Festivities? Heck! I can’t handle the crowds... If you are still going through your day I hope it’ll finish up on a good Note 4 (hee hee hee) and that you will have a relaxed evening!

Apple Talk Fallout is what usually comes after an Apple Talk article; I tell you I get some interesting to downright mad responses from mainly iPhone users when their beloved handset and iPad gets criticism.

#Apple #Samsung #Google #SteveJobs #TimCook #iPhone6 #iPhone6Phablet #iPhone6L #GalaxyNote4 #GalaxyAlpha #Premium #Nexus6 #AndroidL #AndroidLemonMeringuePie

THEY REALLY BELIEVE
THAT IT’S PREMIUM...
Gosh! I am amazed by this discovery: iPhone / iPad users really think that their handset is a “premium” one! Wow! Initially I was asking about the notion of “premium materials” that make up the iPhone / iPad and the fact that the metal is not as durable as plastic. One guy admitted that he dropped his iPad and it now has a dent in it; typically he sidestepped the issue of vulnerability...

Another guy said something along the lines of the iPhone / iPad being likened to a Rolls Royce and that it may “...not be practical for driving the kids around in the back...” However, the adverts have it that the iPhone / iPad can enable children to be creative... I then stated that the top of the range Android handset can be likened to a Ferrari or Lamborghini super-sports cars and Mr. Rolls Royce was not happy about that analogy and had it in his mind that I was belittling the Apple mobile devices. Nothing of the sort!

What I meant by using the Ferrari as an analogy to describe the top of the range Android handset is that it is made from non-metallic materials that such as plastic that makes the Android handset very practical for everyday use! The Ferrari is made from carbon fibre in contrast to the (as far as I know) metal that makes up the Rolls Royce. So, therefore I conclude that many iPhone / iPad users believe that the impractical materials that have gone in to it / them is money well spent. Cool – if that’s what they are happy with.

The first guy who skipped the issue of vulnerability launched into a massive missive about the “premium service and functionality” that he gets with his iDevices. He also mentions that he can move seamlessly – I am paraphrasing – from the iPhone / iPad to the Mac computer. Well, I have news for you mister...

PREMIUM ANDROID?
Another guy just lost it when I stated that, according to analysts, Android have sold over 1 billion handsets compared to 150 million iPhone units. He said something along the lines of, “You can’t compare 1 billion Android handsets to the iPhone...” and... “...iOS and Android would have been a better comparison, blah, blah, blah...” further still... “You (I) should compare the iPhone to a premium Android handset...” Yawn! Why am I being so blasé? I will tell you if you haven’t figured it out already...

The notion of the “premium” Android, from my observations, pertains more to the specifications and – at a stretch – functionality. To the guy that suggested that I should compare the iPhone to a specific Android equivalent... How about the cheapest quad-core Android handset from Google Motorola? Look...

C’mon... ...you’re not going make me write out the spec of the iPhone 5S are you? What are you people like? Lol! Incidentally the Motorola G 4G has a variation known as the Ferrari edition. Hee hee... Put that in your pipe!

iPhone 5S

FEATURES
OS: iOS 7, upgradable to iOS 7.1.2, planned upgrade to iOS 8
Chipset: Apple A7
CPU: Dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone (ARM v8-based)
GPU: PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics)

The spec is similar but obviously not the same... A main difference is beyond the CPU and operating system is the camera; the camera on the iPhone features an 8MP sensor to the Moto G 5MP that only manages HD video at 720p! Oh, the screen size of the Moto G is bigger by half an inch with a 326ppi pixel density to the iPhone 5S 4” screen with the same pixel density. I almost forgot that the Moto G storage is expandable via microSD whereas the iPhone 5S has fixed storage options starting at 16GB! Now let’s look at the prices of these babies!

Moto G 8GB 4G, £150 vs. iPhone 5S 16GB 4G, £540
Me? I have come to the realization that many Android handsets from £150 to £250 are premium! And dare I say it, the prices are set to fall slightly come 2015 due to the influx of Chinese manufacturers. LG have already announced its new budget L series and the L Bello model boasts a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 5” 196ppi pixel density and an 8MP camera! Not bad, huh? I wonder how much it will retail at... Under £140?

Make no mistake, many Android handsets are indeed premium and that’s how it is able to dominate and sell over 1 billion units! Handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S & Note; HTC One M8 and LG G3 are what I would call superphones in that they go all out to give the consumer so much more: DTP quality pictures for printing resulting from great cameras (aside from the HTC One M8 – the pictures are ok but not of the same quality as the Galaxy S, Note and G3! Video recording at 4K (again, with the exception of the One M8) and very useful interface features! Maybe the superphone is a niche market as not everybody needs such hardcore tech! Me? I love all that tech! I want as much tech as possible squeezed into my superphone! Have you seen the Vin Diesel 'XXX' movie and the bit where he tells an uber-nerd technician to, "Put all that (tech and weapons) in there (pointing to a Mustang car - I think)..." That's me with Samsung, LG and any other manufacturer that wants to wow and woo me! I gotta get the Galaxy Note 4! It's not long now...

NEED A PC / MAC?
One can argue that the PC and Mac are essentially the same in what they are capable of. You can make music on a PC; you can make it on a Mac. The same goes for video, DTP, photo editing / manipulation etc. But it is very possible that you may not need either when using the iPhone / iPad or the Android handset / tablet.

I was asked by Mr. Premium Got-A-Dent-In My iDevice, “Is it possible to do use an Android handset or tablet in conjunction with a projector to do presentations...” Of course! There are projectors that allow the Android user to project via Wi-Fi with an app; it’s also possible to use a big flatscreen panel using HDMI and Chromecast and some handsets allows for the Screen Mirroring with or without a dongle. You won’t need the dongle if, for example, you intend on using a Galaxy S or Note with a Samsung smart TV!

Then there is much iteration of apps that can edit Microsoft Office documents – including PowerPoint presentations. Google has them all: Slides, Docs and Sheets! And there are a few apps available only for the tablet that enables the creation of eBooks!

And should you need to transfer files to be completed on the PC or Mac you can! I guess that’s what you’d call premium functionality! I can’t think of any Android handset above the £130 upwards price range that can’t do any of the above! Personally, I haven’t had much time with budget handsets at the low-end of the market. I had a couple that cost £80 at the time and I had to get rid very quickly as I found them too slow and the screen too small!

BREAKTHROUGH
I think I may have made a breakthrough in understanding the iDevice user psychology! They actually think that the Android handset is unable to perform office tasks such as word processing, projecting slides with the aid of a projector / screen-panel for example. You can also edit video; make high quality professional music... I can’t think of anything that I can’t do on a smartphone / superphone! Okay, I concede that the camera quality can vary on an Android handset – you get what you pay for! Lol! But you are still paying less than you would for an iPhone! Once again, I do not see metal as being a premium component of a handset. My beloved Galaxy S2 looks pretty much like it did when I took it out of the box some years ago! I am pretty proud about that! Now my nephew’s iPhone 5S... Ouch! Hee hee...

Anyway, it was good to read the responses from the Apple Talk articles!

I do think that Android 5, Lemon Meringue Pie, is going to be a major breakthrough for the Android industry! While iOS is catching up to Android it will fall behind again this fall! We could be seeing a new Nexus handset, Nexus 6, to usher in Android 5 which, I predict, will the crème de la crème of mobile operating systems! It should be faster, leaner and even more versatile than before! I think it will have manufacturers doing away with heavy user interface overlays for even more responsiveness! Roll on 64-bit Android! The premiums just keep getting higher!

Hey! If you are happy with your iPhone – and I do hope that 6 and 6L is all what you want it to be – that’s brilliant! It’s all good! But some are marginally better! Wink, wink! Ahem, Galaxy Note 4! Ahem! Wink!

That’s something to think about!
