SYNAPSE CIRCUIT IFA 2014

LG: G3 Stylus
  SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

IFA 2014
Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers. I hope you had a great day! My day has been odd! I just hate it when tech does not work as expected and this means that a certain gadget will be on its way back to the store first thing in the morning! I hope you are having better luck with your tech!

Are you looking forward to this year’s IFA? I certainly am!

#IFA #IFABerlin2014 #SamsungGalaxyNote4 #ASUS #Huawei #LG

TECH BONANZA = IFA
I am very, very excited about IFA 2014 as there will be an obscene amount of tech that we can look forward to! I keep saying that I am after a tablet and I have been ever since the Nexus 7 came out but I have been, admittedly, hanging back to see how the tablet market develops and it looks like the time is right!

I am also in the market for a couple of upgrades later on this year and at the moment the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is high on my list of the most wanted handset! But will I wait for the Galaxy S6 or go for one of the many challengers to Samsung’s throne! We’ll have to see about that!

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
I am expecting more wearable tech in the form of smartwatches. Hmmmm... To be honest I think that the smartwatch is in its infancy and if I were to go for one I’d like to get a pretty decent one. By all accounts the Moto 360 could be the one to go for and it is said that it will be announced at IFA; I am very curious! Will it be all that it’s cracked up to be? Or will LG’s round smartwatch usurp the Moto 360? It wouldn’t surprise me if ASUS got in on the act too... I know ASUS have got a few handsets and tablets on offer this year but I am surprised that they haven’t announced or leaked a smartwatch.

I guess that the main smartwatch to look out for it is Samsung Gear Solo that is said to contain a SIM; “Hello, Dick Tracy...” This I’ve gotta see! It’s supposed be round also! I have to say that I am at a loss as to why none of the bigwig manufacturers haven’t come up with a large rectangular screen on a wristband instead of these odd looking small watch faces! Hmmmm... Oh, well... I guess when one of those smartwristbands come out it could make the handset obsolete. But there again, these tech-glasses have yet to take off in a big way... I think people are still afraid of these things! Lol! One day, one day... The price has a way to go for such smartgoggles to enter the mainstream!

TABLETS
Yes, I told you that that the new phablet is the 7 inch tablet with either 3G or 4G built into them! We should be seeing quite a few of those – I think I may have outed one such tablet / phablet by ASUS. It is unclear if they are going to produce similar tablets but with a slimmer bezel so that it looks more like a handset – just like the Samsung Q!

Now, would Samsung release a 7” version of the Galaxy Tab S that has 4G as a standard? Hmmmm... I guess that will take away from the Galaxy Note 4.

Archos have announced a number of tablets to hit the market this year and one of them is the 8” tablet, 80 Helium 4G! It features a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage expandable by microSD card up to 64GB! You can make and take calls on it! And it only costs £199.99! Gosh! Oh, it has a 5MP main camera and 2MP front-facing for video calls! Sweet!
HANDSETS
Yes, just before the iPhone 6 is announced there will be so much competition from IFA alone that it is so very interesting to see if the iPhone market will grow or shrink even further! Having been in some serious shall we say “discussions” with iPhone fans it is a tough one to call! I would imagine that those that use the iPhone as a productivity tool may stick with it but those that just want a fancy handset the iPhone may have outlived its usefulness. Huawei is going to show off its Ascend P7 handset with a sapphire display! Nice!

Check out the ASUS ZenFone 5 (A501KL) is a 2GHz quad-core handset with a 5” (Gorilla Glass, 720p) display that features 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8MP main camera, 4G and Android 4.4 (KitKat) with ZenUI costs £199.99! Yes, it is expandable via microSD up to 64GB RAM! Wow! Should ASUS get the marketing right this handset could fly!

LG will show off the G3 Stylus that could be a budget alternative to the tripped out Galaxy Note 4! We’ll see! The G3 Stylus is not like the G3 in terms of the QHD 1440 x 2560. Uh-uh! The G3 Sylus features a 5.5” screen with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a pixel density of 200 ppi. So, the G3 Stylus is looking to take the budget end of the phablet market! But the Galaxy Mega 2 could pour cold water on that challenge.

We can expect the Sony Xperia Z3 and its mini variant. For some reason I am not yet convinced by Sony handset designs. I am hoping to see a better design from them. I think the square design is getting a little long in the tooth! What I appreciate about LG designs is the round edges and the very slim bezel on it.

Motorola could be showing off the Moto G2 and X-1. From what I have seen of the “leaks” I do like the design with the rounded edges. I don’t fancy speculating on the components within as I’d rather weigh them with the competition when I learn what they are. I personally find creating articles on spec a little tired. I think now that the superphones are here there’s not that much to build upon when it comes to the brilliant premium handsets that we have come to expect from the Android stable at the middle range of the market. The thing with Android is that we are getting some great efforts in at the lower end too! I think it has gotten to a point where the markets of high, middle and low are starting to blur. One day we’ll be purchasing handsets from a dispensing machine! Lol!

OBSERVATIONS
Has the camcorder become obsolete? Sure, I see them in stores but it appears as if there is no longer a great interest in the camcorder and I guess this is thanks to the superphones from Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. There was a bit of an interest in 3D camcorders but the interest in that seems to have fizzled out. By the looks of things the camcorder has ported over to the digital SLR market which by all accounts is still going strong. Mobile phone photos are good but not quite up to the quality of the digital SLR.

TV
I am expecting announcements of 4K televisions – I may be getting one this Christmas to watch my Galaxy Note 4 footage! I am expecting some announcements from companies we’ve never even heard of looking to get inexpensive 4K televisions into the European market and this should drive the prices of 1080p televisions down even more! The large hypermarkets are selling these 1080p TVs by the truck load so it seems; every time I visit my local 24hr hypermarket I see at least a couple of people walking away with inexpensive HD TVs. Come October to December this year there will be some level entry 4K TVs.

VISION
What I see is Android gaining more ground in terms of more handsets and tablets towards the end of this year and throughout 2015 we’ll be seeing the Android tablet invading the streets all over the world! My American friends tell me that Android tablets are commonplace on the streets and it is only a matter of time before London and UK-wide streets have people walking around with Android tablets as they do with their handsets. It is going to be a great thing! We should also be seeing some Android based TV boxes / gizmos; since ceasing Virgin Media I am keen on developing my Android set-up!

I also expect to see more on automated home systems for both Android and iOS. I thought the last two years was an exciting time for technology and we have so much more to look forward to!

I hope to bring you some news / facts on what I think is the best of IFA 2014!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT IFA BERLIN HIGHLIGHTS

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
IFA BERLIN HIGHLIGHTS

#IFA #IFABerlin #Asus #LG #Sony

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! I hope you have had a good if not exceptional day! And if your day is still unravelling there is still time! Wink, wink!

NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING
That’s wonderful nature of IFA! It is a Tech Lover’s dream! I love tech! Yes, the understatement of this year! IFA certainly backs up what I stated in another blog, “A new handset and tablet release from Android and Windows is like reliving the moment when iPhone and iPad were first introduced.” Jeez! I am quoting myself. Lol! But it is true. However, I didn’t get an iPhone or iPad – they felt and still feel like specialist devices that only serve to glorify Apple and not the consumer in an encompassing manner. Of course that’s just my opinion and you’re entitled to yours. I have to say that it cracks me up to see some iPhone fans pretending that major non-Apple technologies don’t matter. Kudos to Apple for creating that loyalty in some of their users! I see technology as a bridge and not a haven for a chosen few!

REELING...
I am still reeling from the Samsung Unpacked event. I’m trying to figure out a way of getting the Galaxy Note 3 and Gear! Lol! I know... I am nuts! Oooh, c’mon... ...you know you want a Galaxy Note 3! Don’t lie to me! Hahaha!

ASUS
Asus announced the Transformer Pad with the Tegra 4 CPU.
The 10.1-inch Android tablet has a overhaul that includes the 1.9GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor, along with a 2560x1600 IPS display. My thoughts are thus: great innards but the design is a tad disappointing. I would like to see Android tablets with a thinner bezel; however it is not lost on me that having a thick bezel makes the tablet easy to handle, to avoid accidentally interacting with the screen. I am also of the opinion that a thick set bezel makes the screen appear to be smaller than it actually is. I am hoping that the price gets a significant rethink – especially as I have this knowing feeling that I will have a tablet this year.

Then there is the Fonepad Note 6. It features a Full HD Super IPS+ display with both multi-touch and stylus inputs. It's also powered by the new Intel Atom Z2580 processor clocked at 2Ghz. It comes with HSPA+ and 3G that will keep you connected and not reliant on Wi-Fi. The original Fonepad 7” tablet turned out to be quite a hit what with being able to make calls ‘n’ all. It can be picked up for £169! The Fonepad Note 6 is, perhaps, positioning itself as an alternative to the Note 3. Certainly, it will be a phablet to consider amongst a whole range of phablets coming out this year!

Asus also presented the Memo Pad 8 and Memo Pad 10. Both Android tablets offer 1280x800 resolution displays and quad-core processors. The Memo Pad 8 is an 8GB model with a 5MP rear camera and 1.2MP front-facing snapper. The 10, meanwhile, comes in 8GB and 10GB versions and has a 10” display. You can currently pick up a 7” Memo Pad for £169! Seeing as Asus is behind the Google Nexus 7 the Memo Pad 8 and 10 are alternatives to the Nexus in that you can get slightly bigger tablets for what I imagine to be the same ballpark asking price. We’ll see!

That’s pretty much the Android side of Asus wrapped up! As you’d expect there are Windows offerings in the shape of the X102BA, snazzy laptop sporting a 10.1” HD display with 10-point multi-touch for navigating Windows 8! Cool! Again, I find myself very curious about the price because the cost of a good laptop keeps tumbling down! And to think I once spent £2k on a laptop that was at one point the state of the art. Now it is state of fart! It has to be one of the most expensive paperweights going!

Then there are the Zenbook models - the UX301 and UX302 – that feature the Haswell Intel processors, souped-up graphics and a high resolution WQHD display (on certain versions). Something tells me that we are already gearing up for 4K video media!

They look very much like the Macbook models and are very desirable indeed!
LG
LG boasted the world's biggest Ultra HD curved OLED TV. The 77” curved screen may one day change cinema once more. If you were old enough to remember the introduction of the VHS video recorder and player then you’d probably recall a minor slump in cinema going figures. Should the 77” TV becomes a commonplace household product I would imagine that the latest movies / films can be screen from the cloud onto your screen at home! That would be so nice; I would love to avoid noisy people and having some idiots shoe at the back of my head!

Then there’s the G Pad 8.3 tablet that may or may not come to the UK market. The G Pad looks like it too, like Asus, Samsung and Sony premium tablets, could give the iPad and iPad mini a considerable challenge. Not to bash the iPad too much but, as I predicted, it is losing ground to Android tablets. I predict again that by mid 2014 the iPad will be on 27% of the tablet market share.

SONY
Sony showed off its Xperia Z1which features what is most likely to be the best camera in the world at 20.7MP camera that does not do 4K video! What???? The Z1 does look good though. It features Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and rocks a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm MSM8974 Quad Core CPU! Tasty! It’s also waterproof!

If you’re a little envious of the Z1 the DSC-QX100 might interest you. The DSC-QX100 is an attachable camera that looks like a lens that can be attached to any handset and I presume tablets too! Here’s the spec:

F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens
Maximum aperture F1.8 – 4.9
1.0 type Exmor CMOS sensor
20.2 megapixels
BIONZ image processor
3.6x optical zoom (28 – 100 mm)
Optical SteadyShot (image stabilization)
Optical SteadyShot Active (video stabilisation)
Multi terminal/ Triluminos color compatibility
Wi-Fi
NFC

All the above looks very promising for photography enthusiasts! I think it is a great idea, I love taking pictures on my mobile phone and I this is a must have gadget for me!

That’s it for now! If I get more time I will write about more at IFA!

Take good care!

SAMSUNG UNPACKED: EPISODE 2 @ Berlin IFA!

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
SAMSUNG UNPACKED: EPISODE 2 @ Berlin IFA!
#Samsung #SamsungUnpacked #SamsungIFA #SamsungGalaxyNote3 #SamsungGear #SamsungGalaxyNote10.1

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s that time again... Time to take note, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to be precise!

BLOWN AWAY!
Wow! I have to say that Samsung did not disappoint tonight! Samsung delivered what are the best devices that I’ve ever seen! The Galaxy Note 3 is a superb instrument, the design is sublime. And yes, it does feature 4K video recording but it appears as though there may be two different models (3G & LTE) and one of which will feature the 4K video camera. Hmmmm...

NOTE 3
I am very happy that Samsung stuck to using plastic for the body; the removable back is textured to simulate a leather notebook. The back will come in different colours. MY THOUGHTS
Put simply that’s... KA and POW!!!! I WANT ONE!!!! The Galaxy Note 3 blows the competition away! There’s Multiview Smartshare that allows multiple Note 3 users to create a large screen to view video for example. I do hope that the 4K video comes to the UK / European markets!

It’s a journalists dream! Imagine being able to take high quality photos and videos which can be media ready... Gone are the need for dedicated devices such as a video camera and digital camera. Naturally, it is dependent on where the media is destined for delivery. However, if your media is web based you are laughing! C’mon, 1080p video at 60 frames per second! Wow! Oh, the 13MP camera gets an LED and stabilization to enhance low light photography! Awesome!

The features of the Note 3 are encompassing but I ought to mention ‘Air Command’ which brings up a fan-like interaction that allows you to access S Pen features and applications. I don’t think there is a manufacturer that can match the usability features that Samsung puts into its premium handsets.

GEAR SMARTWATCH
Gear met with my anticipations and expectations in that it is very much like an extension of the Bluetooth headset; it is intended to compliment the premium Galaxy range of handsets. Again, I do want one!!!!

Voice operation
The built-in speaker allows users to conduct hands-free calls directly from the Gear, maintaining connections to their mobile communications without disrupting their daily routines. For example, a user leaving the grocery store, whose hands are full with shopping bags, could still make a call by speaking into the GALAXY Gear without touching the screen. Users can also draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms, and check the weather on the GALAXY Gear with S Voice.

Capture daily life from your wrist
In addition to enabling smart device controls, Samsung GALAXY Gear introduces several features that help users easily capture life’s meaningful moments which otherwise might be missed. With the Memographer feature, a 1.9 Megapixel camera, users who are on the move or participating in physical activities can record both photos and video to create quick, visual records of important information or events from their daily lives, as well as share them on their social networks. Extending the quick-record concept, Voice Memo lets users capture important thoughts or conversations from their wrists and save those voice recordings into texts on their Samsung GALAXY devices.

A growing list of controls for favorite features
With the GALAXY Gear, users gain a wide range of favorite features that further increase the benefits of this new accessory. New security enhancement Auto Lock automatically secures the companion smartphone screen any time that GALAXY Gear is more than 1.5 meters away from the smartphone, and then unlocks the smartphone when the companion devices are near each other again. Find My Device helps users find the location of their smart devices when they have been misplaced by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate. With Samsung GALAXY Gear, users can also control the music played on their Samsung GALAXY devices. As with traditional music players, it helps users browse, play and pause songs even when their smart device is not within reach. Finally, the GALAXY Gear also works like a Pedometer to track physical activity via enhanced, built-in sensor technology. This feature systematically and automatically monitors users so they can track key personal data such as calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

Standalone Watch and Iconic Fashion Accessory
Samsung GALAXY Gear embodies understated elegance. Its refined design, executed in, high-quality finishes, conjures images of luxury jewelry while still being understated enough to go well with any outfit. A rounded and simple flowing form wraps around the body, integrating with the user’s personal environment, and maintaining comfort at all times. The GALAXY Gear also serves as a wristwatch and includes several face options that create the opportunity for users to personalize their watch face. It will come preloaded with 10 different clock options and more choices will be downloadable via Samsung Apps. The GALAXY Gear experience can be further personalized by selecting from six colors that will be available at launch: Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green.

Samsung GALAXY Gear will be launched with the GALAXY Note 3 in more than 140 countries around the world starting from September 25.

You may have noticed that the date for release in most countries is September 25 and not the 16 as indicated by the UK Three network that will be giving users 4G at no extra cost!!!! Brilliant! I would imagine there will be an upfront cost for the Note 3 and there could be a special offer to combine it with Gear! Cool! Oh my! I just want them already! Lol!

GALAXY NOTE 10.1 2014 EDITION: THEY’VE SMASHED IT!
Naturally, I knew that Samsung was going to introduce a tablet and I was wrong about a 12” version. But, hey, that could come later on in the fall of 2013 or early 2014!

Certainly, the Note 10.1 2014 edition has smashed the retina screen once and for all. Before you accuse me of being an Apple hater I am just stating that at last Android tablet users have yet another tablet option with a great screen resolution! That’s it! 2560 x 1600! WOW! I should reserve my “WOW” until I have seen what it costs! Lol! If you have been following my articles on the Android tablet phenomenon you will know that I am in the market for a tablet this year. I think I will wait it out a little to see what develops! There will be 3G / WiFi and LTE versions! Cool! See photo above for more spec! Again, I want it! Lol!

The Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition appears to be superlative!

PRESENTATION
The presentation was definitely a step back from the Galaxy S4 launch but it was very enjoyable nonetheless. I thought Jason Bradbury was quite good as the MC.

Again, what I love about Samsung presentations is that they do not get involved in taking pot shots at the competition, namely Apple, and prefer to wow the audience with amazing products with great usability.

Samsung even mentioned Android for a change! Perhaps Samsung and Google weren’t on good terms (as suggested by some press) for whatever reason but that they are mentioning Android shows anyone in doubt that Samsung are not going to move away from the Android platform anytime soon!

The presentation was also broadcast featured a live link via satellite to New York’s Times Square!

The ‘Design Your Life’ theme worked brilliantly and I do believe that Samsung has delivered the future today! Lol! So Futurama (the Sci-Fi cartoon series).

As a tech fan Samsung makes me glad to be alive in this day and age!

What do you reckon?

Take good care!
