SAMSUNG MARKETING POWER vs APPLE SMOKE AND MIRRORS SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
SAMSUNG’S MARKETING POWER vs. APPLE’S SMOKE & MIRRORS

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? It is so good to see you as always! I hope you are getting maximum joy out of your tech! More reviews are coming! Say, it’s been a while since Synapse Circuit hosted a competition... Wait and see... Wink, wink...

Whether you like or even love Samsung or not you can you honestly say that you haven’t talked about a Samsung device – namely the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge? Weren’t you impressed by the Galaxy Note 4? And what about the often sublime Samsung adverts – especially when they mock the “Sheeple” or “iSheep”? But, hey, someone begs to differ...

"Everybody talks about Apple. Nobody talks about Samsung, or Microsoft, for that matter," says former Apple CEO John Sculley.

TELL A LIE OFTEN ENOUGH AND YOU’LL START TO BELIEVE IT
It’s as though the people at Apple are cyborgs in that what comes from their mouths is a vehement constant denial of the competition, “Apple is fantastic. Apple is amazing. Apple is wonderful...”

Well, it hasn’t always been like that as the massive tech war that amounted to an undue lawsuit to prevent Samsung products from competing around the globe. People were certainly talking about Samsung then (and now)!

I have exposed Apple on many occasions from the destruction of the music industry with iTunes, exaggerated sales figures and how the iPhone 5 tanked as did the 5C. However, despite these, er, hiccups the Apple skin remains shiny and bright. There may be a rotten core below the surface.

Just about everybody who follows tech news knows that 2014 has been hard for Samsung due to the ever changing Android market; the standards have definitely been upped somewhat. What was a high-end handset 2 years ago is now a budget one today. We know about the Chinese manufacturers and how they have cornered the mid to mid-high end market. However – and I keep saying this – I have yet to see a handset from a Chinese manufacturer that can rival the premium Samsung models, Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. There is no doubt that these mid to high-end Chinese handsets are a cost effective alternative to Samsung and other premium staples but I would imagine that a majority of Android fans in the West would prefer a Galaxy Note or Galaxy S over something like the OnePlus One. Well, I know that the Galaxy Note 4 has great audio support for music composition on the fly and I suspect that the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will have the same audio features and more besides.

While the Chinese have switched from Samsung and Apple to national manufacturers such as Xiaomi, for example, it is not going to happen globally. Even if Xiaomi or OnePlus entered the US and European markets in a big way I do not think that we’ll switch all of a sudden! Just look at Huawei over here in the UK – they are still struggling to break the stranglehold of Samsung, LG and HTC. The only market that Huawei can tap is the budget one. And it is the same with ZTE (here in the UK); they are now forced to create better handsets with a lower price.

Then you look at other Android competitors such as Acer and Archos, they are forced to create better handset at a lower price entry.

GALAXY S5
Once again, the Galaxy S5 was a pedestrian “back to basics” offering from Samsung; it is what people have been talking about from the initial unpacking until now! So, all eyes are upon The Next Galaxy Unpacked come March 1st at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

But you’d be hard pressed to find someone that will talk about the failure of the iPhone 5 and 5C. Apple won’t talk about it because they behave like those failures never happened. Given the choice of a Galaxy S5 and an iPhone 5 or 5C I wouldn’t have to think about it: Galaxy S5!

The Galaxy S5 is still a great handset that features a great camera amongst other features such as the heart rate monitor.

Did Samsung’s marketing power or lack thereof have an adverse effect on the Galaxy S5 sales? It’s a tough one to call because the general consensus from the UK tech magazines put the LG G3 on top of the UK Android market and no matter how many ads Samsung take out in magazines and television it is hard to dissuade the public from tech magazine (paper and TV) recommendations. The Galaxy S5 simply didn’t capture the imagination of the majority of tech media in the UK. As a Samsung fan myself I wasn’t very impressed with the Galaxy S5 design but beyond the design it was the best handset of 2014 only coming second to the Galaxy Note 4 released in September. And on the streets I see so many people with Galaxy Note 3 handsets – men and women! Y’know, I have yet to see someone with an LG G3 on the streets...

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE:
TAKING ON THE iPHONE

It’s one thing taking on the rest of the Android manufacturers but to take on the iPhone??? Well, actually it is not that big of mountain to climb because Samsung premium handsets are better than the iPhone. Yes, really! Here:-

1. THE DESIGN IS BETTER.
Yes, I do understand the idea of “premium” materials but that’s not necessarily the whole story. We all know that all smartphones suffer from a weak battery. To be able to swap out the battery on the Galaxy S series up to 5 and the Note series to the current fourth incarnation is the hallmark of a great design. Just the other day when I was in a coffee shop in Soho I witnessed a group of Asian patrons with their iPhones plugged into the wall.

Above: Chief Apple designer, Jony Ive. You'd look miserable too if all your designs were surpassed...

One more time... We interface with the screen and so having a big 5” screen on the Galaxy S5 and 5.7” on the Galaxy Note 4 makes the rest of the handset quite superficial. Show one person that is infatuated with the back of the phone and I’ll show you an elitist ill-informed person that is in love with the Apple logo. The only time I really interface with the back of my Galaxy handsets is to change the battery and check my heart rate. That’s it! With the iPhone the forehead and chin, so to speak, are quite big and unsightly. Jony Ive is simply overrated as a designer. All Ive can do is just criticize and bitch – very boring!

2. MORE FUNCTIONALITY
The functionality of the Galaxy S and Note series are unsurpassed. Because Apple isn’t able to imbue the iPhone with such functionality they call Samsung’s innovations “gimmicks”. Once a person goes from the iPhone to a Galaxy Note, for example, they rarely go back. I have to admit that I find it hard to believe when someone tells me that they have gone from a Galaxy Note to an iPhone 6 Plus as I think they are either lying for effect (to prop up Apple) or they simply didn’t make use of the Galaxy Note. Yes, Apple announced record breaking sales and profits but I do think that it’s the affluent Chinese market that has helped. Android still has over 80% of the market and Samsung is still on top!

The iPhone cannot beat Android and Samsung’s TouchWiz for functionality. Yet, that said, TouchWiz can produce some lag where the fluidity of the interface goes. I can’t say that a little lag here and there has ruined my enjoyment of the Galaxy S and Note handsets. I can’t say that I have noticed any lag or stutters on the Galaxy Note 4 thus so far.

3. PRODUCTIVITY
You’d think that the Apple App Store has a greater edge over Google Play Store the gap that was once there has closed considerably. In addition Samsung is creating apps for its own Galaxy App Store; granted that the Galaxy App Store features many apps that can be found on the Google App Store there are a few apps pertaining to the Galaxy S and Note handsets.

Once again, the productivity apps can output to file formats for further work on a PC or Mac. This is why serious technology fans go for the Galaxy range of premium handsets over the iPhone.

The iOS operating system is just a front for iTunes.

MARKETING: THE DIFFERENCE
In some ways Apple is very clever; over the years Jobs has cultivated an acute elitism in the personal computing market, “We’re Apple Macs and we are superior to PCs...” Apple had to do something to stem the tide of Microsoft, Windows and inexpensive PCs. Apple jacked up the prices and invested in some revolutionary designs for the time with its Mac computers. It’s like Apple reinvented its brand to appear like a Rolls Royce to the rather bland Ford PCs. But that was a little over 10 years ago. Today we have some brilliant looking PC cases, well designed monitors and interchangeable components such as a graphics card for example. A well made PC can beat a Mac in price and in functionality.

Apple has just repeated the jacked up price formula for the iPhone and iPad; it’s that brand building that captured the minds of the consumer looking to buy into prestige. Add the constant Apple derision of the competition and you have a bunch of people hating the competition for no real reason and this is why many people find it hard to reason with iPhone fans on social networks such as Google Plus.

When you look over at Samsung it is entirely different... What Samsung does is just concentrate on how good its products are. As you know one of the ways Samsung has shown that its products are better is with those wonderful ads that poke fun at the ‘iSheeple’. Apple can never do ads like that. As I have been saying for the longest time that the Apple lawsuit persecution has given Samsung a great deal of publicity! I still chuckle at the iPhone 6 Plus keynote, “Look, it has a landscape mode!” said Peter Schiller. I laughed so hard at the time. The audience, made up of press and Apple personnel, clapped like trained seals. Wow! Isn’t that fantastic?

You’ve only got to look at the build-up for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to see that Samsung are masters of marketing. It will be interesting to see how Samsung markets the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge post the Unpacked event in Barcelona in a couple of days time.

But a good product or products should speak for themselves. Should Samsung get the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge right then they’ve done 80% of the marketing already. There’s a bit of panic in that some Android fans are saying that the next Galaxy won’t have an microSD card slot “copying the iPhone” and will not be water or dust resistant. I can just about live with a non-removable battery on a Samsung but with all the pictures and videos I take with my Galaxy handsets I will need a microSD slot! As for water and dust resistance... ...I’ve never really needed such protection.

I think the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Unpacked event is the most anticipated ever! It has overshadowed all the other manufacturers attending the Mobile World Congress; the tech media has written an article practically every day based on pure speculation, Samsung’s finances, “leaked” pictures and so on... What I’ve tried to do is to step back a little and try and put the clues together. I didn’t want to join in with the rumour manufacture and photo leaks from unofficial sources. Such tech journalism is lazy in my opinion. I try to put some effort in my journals. Lol!

We’ll just have to wait and see what Samsung reveals this Sunday!

GALAXY S6 AND S EDGE GREAT EXPECTATIONS SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

Is this the actual Galaxy S6? Notice that the edge isn't the same as that on the Galaxy Note Edge and therefore what we are looking at is the bezeless Galaxy S6!
Yeah, I'd like to see Samsung pull that one off - the extendable screen.

SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
GALAXY S6 & S EDGE:
GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s wonderful to see you as always! I hope that you’re well and making the most of your tech! I also hope that you are wrapped up warm as it’s still chilly here in London and Toronto (my Canadian Friends inform me).

Yes, this is the final countdown... 3 days to go before we learn what is the actual Samsung Galaxy S6 and S Edge are all about!

#Samsung #GalaxyS6 #GalaxySEdge #GalaxyS6Rumours #MWC2015 #MobileWorldCongress2015 #GalaxyS6Active

BRACE YOURSELVES
Yes, I have kept true to my word by not copying all the other tech media out there and post up “leaked” images of the Galaxy S6 and S Edge. By all accounts some network providers have revealed images of the Galaxy S Edge – I think! Lol! Anyway, if you have been keenly chasing up every bit of news on the Galaxy S6 and S Edge then I am sure you have seen just about all the “leaked” images there is to see!

Again, I do believe that these “leaks” are to bring us back to reality. If you are anything like me you will succumb to fantasies of what the next premium Samsung handset can possibly look like! All those beautiful concept renderings can send me into Lala Land... And I have learned the hard way! The leaks are to reduce our expectations. “Ground Zero” to Samsung may S Translate into something entirely different to us! I am still dazzled by the folding Galaxy S model in the promotional video showing off the possibilities of the flexible YOUM screen. I do think that there are many out there that expect this folding screen Galaxy S anytime soon... I reckon it is a distinct possibility as technology allows for the printing of circuitboards unto flexible materials such as plastic or even paper! There is no telling how far that technology has gotten and if it will bring us that folding screen Galaxy S handset... Galaxy S10???

NO WAY, NORWAY
Samsung Norway has taken what I see as sensible measures to lower our expectations with a clever site that mocks the Galaxy S6 and S Edge rumour mill. I reckon it’s precisely these kinds of rumours that hurt the Galaxy S5... Okay, it didn’t help that Samsung felt the need to go “back to basics” on that particular model. Why, Samsung? Why? Lol!

Above: Samsung Norway having a laugh!

DESIGN PREDICTION
ON THE GALAXY S6

Once again, if the “leaked” pictures are anything to go by I figure we’ll be seeing something along the lines of the Galaxy A series mixed with a bit of the iPhone and One M8 as the metal design that Samsung is going for is similar - but not a copy – of the iPhone. Both the iPhone and Samsung handsets have a ‘Home’ button and therefore there is a going to be an industrial design standard that places certain features in the same area such as the speaker on the Galaxy S6 finding itself at the bottom next to the mini USB port along with the headphone jack – if the “leaked” pictures prove to be genuine. Personally, I prefer the headphone jack to be at the top of the handset as I’ve become accustomed to it being that way. I would prefer front-facing speakers... But more than aesthetics it’s what the Galaxy S6 and S Edge can do that is most relevant to me.

Like it or not the Galaxy S6 and S Edge will have that distinctive Samsung design signature imprinted upon it.

As predicted years ago: a metal body will bump up the price of the handset considerably! I am expecting a high upfront payment cost here in the UK when taking the Galaxy S6 and S Edge out on a contract! Golly gee!

Once again, here are the projected / rumoured prices of the Galaxy S6 and S Edge. Look away if you are squeamish!

Galaxy S6

32GB internal memory, €749
64GB, €849
128GB, €949

Galaxy S Edge

32GB, €849
64GB, €949
128GB, €1049

DISAPPOINTMENT ALREADY?
Hmmm... Well, it does look likely that the Galaxy S6 will be getting a 5” screen. I have to say that I wanted a 5.5” screen simply because big is best! Big is best and that cannot be denied! Once you’ve gone 5.5” and over you may find that it is pretty hard to go back! But that said I still love my Galaxy S4 and was watching a TV programme through BBC iPlayer earlier on.

“A 5.5” screen on a Galaxy S model will eat into the Galaxy Note market...” I don’t think so as the handsets are quite different! The Galaxy Note 4 has a 5.7” screen and an S Pen; the functionality is markedly different to that of the Galaxy S5 for example.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the Galaxy S6 will feature a 64-bit CPU where the Galaxy Note 4 will be 32-bit (the UK version).

It may be possible that Samsung will give the Galaxy S Edge a larger screen and body to incorporate the curved screen but I am not holding my breath. While there are massive Galaxy S6 leaks there are no Galaxy S Edge leaks aside from the US networks in their respective different colours: yellow, magenta (T-Mobile) and blue.

Another rumour that comes across as definite is that the camera will be the same 16MP one as found on the Galaxy Note 4 and not 20MP as we were given to expect from the Galaxy S6 benchmark tests. In some ways it makes sense to keep the camera the same as the Galaxy Note 4 as it’s still on the market! I don’t care too much about not having 20MP as the 16MP camera on the Galaxy Note 4 produces great results!

I can tell you that Samsung has really whipped up the excitement for the Galaxy S6 and S Edge BIG TIME!!!

BETWEEN THE LINES
Finally, what I have noticed across the Norwegian “Is This The Next?” site, the recent promotional video and the “leaked” images are possibly inconsistencies.

For example the leaked images shows slightly different looking cameras at the back and therefore it could be Samsung playing with our expectations. Also they could be winding up the Apple biased tech media that have it that Samsung is yet again “copying the iPhone” design.

Notice that the Samsung promotional material doesn’t say “Galaxies” in plural. Okay, they didn’t say “Galaxy Notes” for the unpacking of the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge. However, the latest promotional video voiceover says, “Borders will be free...” amongst other qualities. This makes me wonder if there will be a Galaxy S6 that has absolutely no bezel but a slightly curved screen at each side and a Galaxy S6 that is more in keeping with the traditional design (Galaxy S4 and S5). Plus the Galaxy S Edge model that looks very much like the Galaxy Note Edge. So, I am thinking that there will be 2 Galaxy S6 models (one with no bezels, the other could feature water and dust resistance) and a distinct Galaxy S Edge model. This could also explain why the camera rumours keep fluctuating because the cameras may differ between the versions. It would explain why a certain case manufacturer shows at least 3 discernible protective cases for the forthcoming Galaxy S series.

It has become a trend for Samsung to put out handsets from a design series in different screen sizes, etc as we’ve seen with the Galaxy A series: 3, 5 and 7 - or something like that. Samsung could very well do the same for the next Galaxy!

We’ll just have to wait and see... February is at last coming to an end! Goodness knows that I have to get my skates on as 2015 will pass me by! I have a few things that I want to achieve with Synapse Circuit! Wink, wink...

SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 LEAK DAMAGE SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

SAMSUNG GALAXY S6:
LEAK DAMAGE?

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How goes it? Well, it’s not long before we learn what the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge is all about! Are you planning on getting either the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S Edge? I’ve got to have the Galaxy S Edge as I gave the Galaxy Note Edge a miss for the Galaxy Gear VR!

Here’s a question: Do you think that all these “leaks” are damaging Samsung’s chances for success?

#Samsung #GalaxyS6 #GalaxySEdge  #Leaks

NO SURPRISES?
Do you think that there will be no surprises on the day of the reveal, 1st March 2015?

What do we really know about the Galaxy S6 apart from some “leaked” specs? Not a lot, right?

Here’s what we don’t know:-

The new cameras
The camera is a big deal on smartphones these days and Samsung knows more than any manufacturer just how important it is to get this feature right. We’re seeing many Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei putting in some serious MegaPixels on the front-facing camera these days i.e. 13MP! Gosh! Golly! Gee! But at the end of the day it’s easy enough to take selfie pictures with the main camera. Besides, many selfie pictures are fodder for social network feeds; 13MP may be overkill for that purpose. If the rumoured 5MP front-facing camera on the Galaxy S6 & S Edge is accurate then I’d say that Samsung has got it right (for the front-facing camera).

As for the main camera... ...it seems there is some fluctuation between 16MP and 20MP. I am going to place a bet on 20MP as this was a big rumour for the Galaxy S5. We are still in the dark (hee hee) about how the main camera will compete against strong efforts from other manufacturers. I would imagine that in any event (Mobile World Congress 2015) Samsung will make a massive effort in outdoing the iPhone cameras. Samsung should be aiming to obliterate the iPhone cameras in terms of quality of results and not just a high MegaPixel rating alone. As well as optical image stabilization we want more quality night shots.

Battery life
It looks as though the battery will be smaller due to the fact that we are expecting not only a metal / glass unibody but the Galaxy S6 (and possibly S Edge) will be ultra-thin. As a result the battery is said to be 2600 mAh. Now there are several factors to a handset that can drain a battery fast:-

a) The operating system... Lollipop (Android 5) may be causing the battery to drain rapidly as it is a major upgrade. No doubt that Google will keep releasing updates to improve the overall Lollipop experience as they have done with other incarnations of Android.

b) A QHD display! Samsung could reveal an improvement upon its Super AMOLED technology that is less taxing on the battery.

c) The processor; as soon as you start using your handset to consume media i.e. YouTube videos, games and music the battery starts to diminish considerably. It seems to me that the tech media keeps forgetting that Samsung is an experienced chip manufacturer and that it has been responsible for the iPhone A series of processors. Many showed concern regarding the use of Samsung’s own chip, Exynos 7420 for the Galaxy S6 (and S Edge) instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 but Samsung would not jeopardise its flagship knowing how high the stakes are. Who knows how long Samsung has been working on the Exynos 7420? To hazard a guess I would say since Apple engaged Samsung to realize its 64-bit processor; it was just waiting for Lollipop.

We have an idea that the Exynos 7420 chip will be less of a strain on the battery.

Biometric scanner
We have yet to get details on the fingerprint scanner. Apparently the swipe to unlock fingerprint scanner is out! The fingerprint scanner should work in a similar way to the iPhone. But that is just hearsay! It could be that Samsung removes this feature totally from the Galaxy S6 and S Edge. To me a fingerprint scanner is just a novelty.

It does appear as though the heart rate scanner will still be a feature.

Samsung specific apps
I am not talking about bloatware but Samsung productivity apps... We have no idea what or if Samsung will provide its own apps that can take advantage of the Exynos 7420 processor and much rumoured 3GB RAM. For all we know it could be 4GB when it is actually released.

It sort of goes with the biometric scanner in that Samsung did a good job with the S Health app to track steps, heart rate, calorie intake, etc. I use it on my Galaxy Note 4. I find it very useful.

Sound
We don’t know if the Galaxy S6 and S Edge will have the same kind of sound features that will appeal to enthusiastic and professional musicians like the Galaxy Note 4 does. Fingers crossed that it does! The functions for sound can make a great difference in sales as music making apps on Android have gotten to a very high standard. Again, Samsung has its own Soundcamp music making app that could see its way on the Galaxy S6 and S Edge.

See?
There is a lot that we really don’t know. I could post up “leaked” pictures of the Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant but you have probably seen them already. And the chances are is that those pictures are genuine. Samsung and other manufacturers “leak” the images and benchmarks on purpose to generate excitement and to keep the media (in general) writing and talking about the Next Big Thing. The images are also leaked so that we don’t expect too much of the design so when it is actually revealed it shouldn’t come as a shock if you were expecting something outlandish. Once the look of the handset is “revealed” we should then start to focus on what the handset can do.

In a way we’ve been looking at “leaks” ever since Samsung put the Galaxy Alpha out there which has morphed to the all metal Galaxy A series. Some of that design ethos will go into the Galaxy S6 & S Edge (as I have pointed out already).

SHOWTIME
The reason why the Galaxy S5 didn’t do so well wasn’t because of the “leaks”... Well, kind of... We’ll get to that in a bit... It was simply because Samsung didn’t do a presentation in a similar vein to the Galaxy S4. Samsung should get back to those big reveals; while the introduction of the Galaxy S4 didn’t go down with everybody – it was seen as patronizing to women – it still showed off the great functionality of the handset. I would imagine that Samsung was feeling deflated after the Apple witch hunt and when the tech media panned the Galaxy S4 Unpacked event it (Samsung) felt rejected and decided to tone things down for the Galaxy S5, “Back to basics...” If the “leaks” did damage the Galaxy S5 it was because some of the “leaked specs” didn’t live up to the hype. I was initially disappointed with the Galaxy S5 design (even though it was “leaked”); I found myself hoping that some of the concept renderings (at the time) would have been based upon a Samsung design. I was also disappointed with the spec. We Android folk want our premium handsets to have the best tech crammed inside it! As it turned out the Galaxy S5 “Prime” was the LTE-A G906S variant of the Galaxy S5 and there are so many variants of it! Here in the UK – at least – we were expecting the LTE-A G906S to be on the market but it wasn’t. As a result some consumers opted for the LG G3 instead.

I reckon had Samsung stuck to its flamboyant Unpacking sense of showmanship with a more thoughtful approach to women, for example, I think that the Galaxy S5 would have shifted more units. I don’t know about you, but I do appreciate when Samsung shows us situations where its innovations are useful. Samsung didn’t go all out on presentation with the Galaxy S5 so much so that I can’t even remember the whole event like I do the Galaxy S4 Unpacking.

UNPACKED 1st MARCH 2015
I am hoping that Samsung will restore the Unpacked flare that they are famous for since the introduction of the Galaxy S3 at this year’s Mobile World Congress. I want to see what Samsung has envisioned for us. I love it when they make a great show of it combing the use of video projection and actors. The Unpacked event is not just for the media and tech-heads out there... Uh-uh! Many consumers are watching to learn as much as possible on what could be their next handset. Consumers like to see how what could be their next handset differentiate from the competition. It’s these unique selling points that went into the adverts for the Galaxy S3 and S4. For the Galaxy S5 ads I remember the battery saving capabilities and heart rate monitor... Whereas with the Galaxy S3 I learned about the great camera functionality and unique design! And with the Galaxy S4 it was not only the camera but Air Gestures and Smart Pause!

In other words the Galaxy S5 was undersold. That said there was a great interest on the UK launch that took place in London’s Westfield shopping complex in Stratford. Since then Samsung has closed its Stratford retail outlet. It’s a bit of a shame but the Central London Samsung shop is still in existence and is very busy!

A SENSE OF WOW
What I have taken from the various “leaks” is that the Galaxy S6 and S Edge will most likely be the most powerful handsets in the world.

It’s also going to have a different design language that befits an ultra-thin unibody while being recognizable as a Samsung handset. Yeah, yeah... ...some people are saying, “It’s like an iPhone...” already... If the “leaked” pictures are for real then it is more like a hybrid between the HTC One and iPhone. I would have preferred that it had front-facing stereo speakers but as Samsung seem to be aiming to create the world’s thinnest handset it’s not going to support it (front-facing speakers). Maybe, just maybe those “leaked” images are a red herring and we could be in for a surprise with the actual Galaxy S6 and S Edge. I am not going to hold my breath on the design for the reasons mentioned above i.e. the “leaks” are meant to get people used to the design (instead of expecting something from another galaxy... hee hee...). I saw the leak for the Galaxy S3, S4 and S5 and I did hope that they would be different. But the designs never detracted from the functionality of the handsets themselves. I have yet to see the camera on a premium Galaxy handsets bettered; the camera is one of the reasons why I have stuck with the Galaxy S and Note ranges.

I don’t think the media and consumers will be disappointed when it comes to the functionality; functionality is Samsung’s speciality and I expect to be wowed once more on what the Galaxy S6 and S Edge can do!

If Samsung presents the Galaxy S6 and S Edge right I don’t see a reason for them not to sell like hotcakes!

64... BIATCH
That’s right! Samsung’s 64-bit Exynos processor is going to be another selling point for the Galaxy S6 and S Edge. As a result I envisage that the Galaxy S6 and S Edge will be the biggest selling handsets this year (not counting the Galaxy Note 5 come September). By the looks of it the Exynos 7420 processor is more advanced than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and since most premium handsets will be packing it i.e. the HTC One M9, LG Flex 2 and the Sony Z4 - to name a few – the Galaxy S6 and S Edge are going to stand out (from any device using the Snapdragon 810). Samsung are coming back with a vengeance.

APPLE BIASED MEDIA ASSAULT ON GALAXY S6

Above: Samsung's press invite for the 1st March 2015 at the MWC, Barcelona, Spain.
I am looking forward to unpacking whatever form the Galaxy S6 or S Edge takes!
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
APPLE BIASED MEDIA CLAW AT THE SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED GALAXY S6!

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! How are you? It is great to see you as always! I hope that you are keeping warm in this chilly weather. I do my best to keep the sniffles at bay! I also hope that you are making the most of your tech!

I think that all this wishful thinking that Samsung will fade into obscurity is nuts! Plain and simple! What I find even more nuts are “news” sources with an obvious bias towards Apple... Find out why Apple is afraid of Android and Samsung in particular... Read on...

#Samsung #GalaxyS6 #GalaxySEdge

MEEOUCH!
Reading from the blatant Apple biased tech media can be a hoot sometimes... Most of the time the Apple biased media is just plain silly! One source has it that because Samsung “stopped copying Apple products” its fortunes have taken a tumble! LMAO!!! I never saw an iPad Tab 7, did you? I didn’t recall an iPhone Note? Furthermore, the Galaxy 10” tablet series looked nothing like the iPad! Let’s not forget that Apple had to publish an apology to Samsung on its UK based website. Talk about bias! Good gosh!

What this source and many others are referring to about Samsung “copying again” is that the Galaxy S6 could feature a unibody made from aluminium and glass. This is nothing new of course as a few Android manufacturers have done this already. Now it appears as it is Samsung’s turn to go metal and glass! Big deal! I have noticed that the Apple biased tech-media don’t state that Apple have copied the Galaxy Note what with the adoption of the 5.5” screen for the 6 Plus. Uh-uh! But they are quick to state that the 6 Plus is breaking sales records, etc. Funny, huh?

Still, it’s good that the as yet unannounced Samsung Galaxy S6 is getting some coverage. Such “news” just piques my interest even more – as if I couldn’t get more interested! True to my word I have resisted posting up “leaked” images of what could possibly be the Galaxy S6 but if they are anything to go by it looks like iPhone meets the HTC One M series (without the front-facing speakers, sadly).

Besides, the Galaxy S6 and its S Edge variant may have already been “leaked”. And if the “leaked” pictures are anything to go by then the Galaxy S6 still retains the Samsung design language. I am very much of the opinion that these “leaks” are put out on purpose to ease super-high unrealistic hopes and in the case of the Galaxy S Edge it is to tease the public!

I didn’t opt for the Galaxy Note Edge because of the Gear VR unit that I will get later on but I do WANT the Galaxy S Edge for sure! All I can say at this point is that I hope the Galaxy S Edge isn’t exclusive to one mobile network as it was with the Galaxy Note Edge. I think it is an odd way to sell such awesome new designs.

Yes, as I stated in another article: when Samsung showed off the concept handsets with a curved YOUM screen at CES 2013 the press and consumers alike acknowledged these concept handsets as “advanced” and now that these awesome concepts are in production the Apple biased media, once again, is placing a negative spin on these innovations!

Apple is said to be working on a stylus for a possible forthcoming iPad Pro and uses “Air Gestures” too! Now where have I heard that term, “Air Gestures”?

I FEEL THE NEED...
THE NEED FOR...

Judging by the “leaked” benchmarks for the Galaxy S6 or S Edge it looks as though Samsung has produced the fastest Android handset on the planet. And it looks as though my wish for a 5.5” screen is dashed! Here’s what could be the Galaxy S6 innards:-

5.1” 1440 x 2560 display.
Samsung Exynos 7420 processor.
20MP main camera.
5MP front-facing camera.
3GB RAM.
32GB internal storage.
Android 5.0.2.

The Exynos 7420 processor has set a new record at 60,978 points, beating Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 quite comfortably.

This makes me very happy as I am a Samsung Galaxy S user and it also makes me wonder why Samsung couldn’t do this for the Galaxy Note 4. There again, most handsets are designed well in advance. Still, the Galaxy S6 and S Edge appear to be the pinnacle of Android handset design. Oh, it looks as though 4GB of RAM is out of the question! Lol! Now I am curious as to why ASUS has put 4GB of RAM on one of its ZenFone 2 models... Anyhoo... The 20MP camera is very exciting for me as I do LOVE to take pictures on my mobile whenever I am on my travels in Central London. Samsung cameras have never let me down yet! Okay, briefly with the Galaxy S4 which was remedied with a software update soon after.

Sticking with the camera, I do hope that 4K video recording will have no time restrictions.

There’s no mention of external microSD storage but I suspect that Samsung will allow for it as it always has! Now that 4K video recording has taken hold I think it would be advantageous for the capacity of microSD cards to increase! By now I would have thought that up to 500GB is possible on a microSD card, no? Serious video makers will want to take advantage of what 4K has to offer!

Photo and video editing... It would be great if Samsung features some desktop-like apps for picture and video editing to compliment such a great – potentially great – camera!

A SOUND BET
Another aspect of the Galaxy S6 and S Edge to be excited about is the sound facility; Samsung design and builds its flagships around multimedia. As a result the Galaxy Note 4 is a gift to musicians as there is compatibility with IK Multimedia’s music hardware interfaces and apps for Android as it is on iOS. So, if you want to use your handset for the purpose of music making without going iOS then the Galaxy Note 4 is the best offering out of all the OEMs (original equipment manufacturer). I am expecting the same for the Galaxy S6 and S Edge.

I do make music when I get the chance and I am looking forward to exploring music making on Android mobile devices in due course.

And if you are a journalist the Galaxy S6’ relatively small screen factor could change your working life. I used to record interviews using my Galaxy S and an assortment of digital cameras with HD video recording capability. Today I would use my Galaxy Note 4! In the future I see myself using the Galaxy S Edge!

I do think that the tech-media – Apple biased or not seem to be ignorant of the flagship Galaxy S (and Note) audio capabilities. There are some music / audio apps that require a Samsung premium flagship handset for best results. Now do you understand why I bet on Samsung each and every time for my main drivers?

64-BIT ANDROID FRENZY
I just love it when Apple tries to put the squeeze on the Android industry; Cook and co remind me of the coyote in the famous Roadrunner cartoons that always gets caught in his own traps! I do think that Apple have already started to regret forcing 64-bit on Android before it was ready. It was bad for Google and OEMs in the short run. It’s always going to be good for the consumer as the 32-bit handset prices should fall dramatically come summer when 64-bit floods the Android marketplace. This is why ASUS have gone all in with a decent 64-bit handset at a decent price point from the off with the ZenFone 2. Other OEMs have a number of budget 64-bit handsets to bring to the Android marketplace! But not all 64-bit chips are made equally! It looks as though Samsung and it 7420 Exynos chip could land them on top of throne when it comes to chip manufacturing. I know that that Apple is going to use Samsung again for more chips! And I would imagine that other Android OEMs will start using Samsung chips in the not too distant future. Samsung can start clawing back what it has lost in chips alone! Look at the loss that Qualcomm is anticipating because Samsung is using its own chipset on the Galaxy S6 and S Edge? Not taking anything away from Qualcomm they make great chips and I reckon Samsung will still use Qualcomm chips on smaller handsets and tablets.

CHIPPED ACCESSORIES
Talking of “chips”! It looks as though Samsung will require accessory manufacturers to authenticate Galaxy S6 and S Edge accessories with a Samsung issued chip! I think this is about time! I think it is important for consumers to purchase accessories made specifically for Galaxy products knowing that they have been approved by Samsung. I am not talking about just cases... Yes, cases are important as some do not cater for the NFC capability on the Galaxy Note 4 for example. I think it is more important for battery extension accessories such as a power-stick or power-case. I believe an unapproved battery extension for my Galaxy S is what caused it to not function properly. As a result I never use anything that does not have the Samsung branding upon it.

It looks as though that there will be a number of decent accessories that consumers can trust with regards to Samsung products. The thought of a non-removable battery on a Samsung flagship does disturb me somewhat; I’ll be relieved to know that I can use a protective case that also houses a battery extension. Bring it with those authentication chips!

SAMSUNG PAY? BE AFRAID... BE VERY AFRAID...
Ah, that’s another rumour doing the rounds regarding Samsung “copying Apple”. If this rumour turns out to be true then I can only imagine that this is a rebranding of Samsung Wallet and its ability to make payments with PayPal. This is no big deal! Samsung had the Wallet before Apple had Apple Pay. Nothing wrong with a bit of rebranding – if the rumour turns out to be true. I feel that I have to keep reminding people that iOS and Android are two different platforms. The main difference between Android and iOS is that it’s better... Lol! Seriously (even though it true), the main difference is that Android isn’t saddled with another computer operating system that is the equivalent of OS X (and to some extent Windows) and therefore Android can serve both OS X and Windows with applications that save in OS X and Windows compatible formats. So, this is the real reason why Apple is afraid of Samsung’s flagships! It is also a reason why Microsoft is desperately trying to garner interest in Windows, etc. Microsoft has bought a mobile phone manufacturer (Nokia) but there is very little desire for Windows phones. It’s no wonder that Microsoft has invested a reported 70 Million in Cyanogen – the start-up company that will most likely produce a forked version of Android at the end of the day. Again, look where that got Amazon and its Fire phone...

IN CLOSING
I have pointed out that there is no real challenger to the Samsung crown when it comes to its high-end premium flagships. Many of the Chinese OEMs have yet to reach the European and US markets. Because the UK lost mobile device retail outlet Phones 4U last year it has meant that some of the best alternatives to Samsung’s mid-high down to the budget end of the market have been denied to consumers. Phones 4U had the LG L budget range that was quite popular. If you lost your phone or broke it beyond repair or that it costs more than it’s worth then you’d pick up an LG L. However, I think that Motorola has put paid to the budget end of the market whereby the LG L range is dead in the water and even this seems like it could be for the short term as there will be a few budget 64-bit handsets that may prove to be more powerful than the Moto G 2014 for example. So far Motorola haven’t announced that they’ll be releasing a 64-bit equivalent of the Moto G 2015.

Above: Samsung's new lead designer, Lee Don-tae.

I do think that Samsung can also redefine the sub £200 handset market by either using lesser Qualcomm 64-bit processors or Samsung’s Exynos processors. In fact this is a good opportunity for Samsung to experiment with new designs in the form of plastic 64-bit handsets aimed at the budget market now that they have hired designer, Lee Don-tae who worked for Tangerine where Jony Ive worked before starting with Apple.

I don’t think Samsung is going to fade away anytime soon...

We’ll just have to wait and see what the actual Galaxy S6 and S Edge are about... It’s only the 10th of February! Only 18 more days to go! Lol!

SAMSUNG TO FADE AWAY SYNAPSE CIRCUIT

Can Samsung keep its crown?
March 1st 2015 seems like a long, long way away...
SYNAPSE CIRCUIT
SAMSUNG TO FADE AWAY

Goodhour, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s a glorious, golden sunny day here in London! Although it’s quite chilly it looks like spring is on its way! Yay! I hope that all is well with you and yours! I also hope that you are making the most out of your tech!

I tell you, as a Samsung fan, the countdown to the first day of March is excruciating. Like the rest of the world I want to know what the Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant will entail. Oddly, although there is such a great anticipation there’s talk going round to say that Samsung could be on its way to obscurity... Read on...

WISHFUL THINKING?
As pointed out with HTC as an example there are many manufacturers looking to snatch Samsung’s position as the Android king! Then there are the anti-Samsung Android consumer out there that may have already buried the prolific manufacturer... ...this is what makes the Android market so fascinating: we have our favourites. And although there is a sense of loyalty out there it seems as though we mostly favour the manufacturer with most to offer.

Why are people writing off Samsung all of a sudden? To put it very simply: The Galaxy S5. We were expecting more and didn’t quite get it. In addition the Chinese manufacturers have produced high-end handsets with a midrange price and therefore Samsung’s midrange efforts aren’t as enticing as they once were. Again, these Chinese handsets have yet to make an impact on the UK market. And from what I have seen thus so far they (the Chinese manufacturers) have yet to reach the US market.

Over here (the UK) we get a little trickle in the form of Huawei and ZTE and that’s about it! As you know, Huawei produces some pretty darn good handsets but they haven’t broken the UK in a big way. Huawei handsets are the kind you go for when your premium handset is too expensive to repair (the warranty has expired) and some of what Huawei has to offer can make for a decent enough handset for a teenager – if you wanted to buy the handset outright. However, most teenagers are pretty much clued up and you may not be flavour of the month for going Huawei! “Listen, son! It’s Huawei or the highway!”

Above: The ZTE Blade S6. This interesting 64-bit handset from ZTE may never come to the UK marketplace.
Okay... Let’s go over to ZTE... At the moment ZTE handsets can only be had through Virgin Mobile and the handsets on offer haven’t been great! Uh-uh! The best handset that ZTE ever released over here was the Grand X that borrowed heavily from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus design. At the moment ZTE aren’t releasing its better handsets in the UK for some reason. So, like Huawei, ZTE is out of the running for Samsung’s crown.

Which manufacturer can seriously stand a chance to take Samsung’s crown?

IN THE RUNNING
What manufacturers are seriously in contention?

HTC
We looked at HTC a few days ago and I have it that, although its flagship One M8 is beautifully designed, the camera is just not up to the task thus the chances of HTC producing a handset with a killer camera is minimal. It appears that HTC is dashing its UltraPixel main camera for a 20MP one for the One M9 and this could possibly do it for HTC. There again this wouldn’t be the first time that HTC put a potentially good camera in a handset only for the results to be grainy with jerky video. I just do not see HTC reversing that bad camera trend. Then the Sense overlay is pretty boring. As I have already written about HTC I will leave it there. What? You didn’t read the article? Here it is: What’s Wrong With HTC?

SONY
Sony has done very well with the Z range – the Z2 & 3 are quite popular behind Samsung and LG. However, the design for the Z range is quite safe and resembles the Galaxy S2 from way back. Nothing necessarily wrong with the Galaxy S2 design as it is what the handset can do that matters... Aside from a 20-odd MP camera, water and dust resistance the Z range doesn’t offer any extras that can compare with Samsung’s TouchWiz. There’s no Sony version of the S Pen or the Galaxy Note. Sony does produce some great tablets though! I think that these tablets are underestimated! But somehow I don’t see Sony taking Samsung’s crown. Apparently, Sony wants to sell off the Xperia

LG
The G3 is LG’s breakthrough and it looks like they will continue to create beautiful handsets that tick all the boxes: camera, screen and design. LG are poised to take up where the G3 and G Flex left off. I think that LG has the potential to take Samsung’s crown which won’t be that easy. I mean, if you are due an upgrade in April are you going to wait until May or June for the G4?

Another design in the G3 direction could tip the scales in the favour of LG. So far LG is the strongest contender.

ARCHOS
While Archos handsets aren’t freely available in the mobile device retail outlets they are certainly available to purchase through the Archos website. Archos could be the unanticipated French invasion as it seems like they are gearing up to be in the race again. Archos, in my opinion, seem to just miss the mark with its releases. The price for the very good 50b Helium 4G, £149.99, is quite reasonable. The 64-bit 50 Diamond is going for the budget market and this handset could make more dents in Samsung’s midrange efforts. Archos could possibly steal Samsung’s midrange crown. Archos don’t appear to do high-end premium at the moment but who knows what they will be announcing at the Mobile Wold Congress from the 2nd of March?

MOTOROLA
Again, I have to hand it to Motorola for coming back strong in the latter half of 2014 with great handsets to cover the low, mid, mid-high and premium markets. Now that it is owned by Chinese Lenovo there is a strong possibility that Motorola could usurp Samsung on every market front. However, there are some concerns that may keep Motorola waiting in the corridors of power...

1. The camera! Oddly, the 8MP camera on the Moto G 2014 yields in a better result than the 13MP Moto X and Nexus 6 cameras.

2. Motorola devices are pretty much stock Android with a few Motorola embellishments and if you like what Samsung has done with multiple windows, Air gestures and so on then the Moto X and Nexus 6 may seem basic in comparison.

3. If Motorola will do future Nexus devices then the non-microSD slot will be a source of dissuasion – particularly if 4K recording is important to you. Where are you going to store all that footage?

Then there’s Lenovo itself... It is a possibility that they might continue with Lenovo branded handsets but now that they have the Motorola name it means that they have access to the Western markets of Europe and USA. Of course, the Motorola name may carry some weight in China!

ASUS
The ASUS strategy has been an interesting one... ...the ideas were interesting such as the PadFone and Fonepad but through owning a Fonepad I can see that ASUS didn’t do a great job. Then last year we were introduced to the ZenFone range which looked quite interesting but somehow they had the technology of a bygone era in them... How was that possible? No 4G on the any of the ZenFone models (4”, 5” and 6”)! Bizarre! Still, they were reasonable efforts for the budget end of the market. But if you are going to go for the budget – or any market you have to make sure that your handset is packing some serious hardware to be in the running! When one of my contract handsets got damaged beyond repair my first stop was the ZenFone and then the Moto G 2014 came out and I got it! The Moto G 2014 ticked the right boxes: screen size, camera, stereo front-facing speakers and price. The only box that wasn’t ticked was 4G but the damaged phone wasn’t 4G anyway; still it would have been the icing on the cake.

Above: The ZenFone 2... It looks good (for a plastic handset) but is the Intel CPU up to the job?

Now it looks as if ASUS have decided to go all in a produce a decent handset from the off with the ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Zoom. These new ZenFone models are 64-bit and at least one of the models features 4GB RAM; the prices are said to start at $199! I know... ...I keep harping on about the ZenFone, its 4GB RAM and price but it does look like you’re getting a lot of phone for your money! That said, the handsets look to be made from plastic imitating metal and this could put some people off. Will the 13MP PixelMaster camera of the ZenFone 2 have what it takes to challenge the 20MP camera (if that’s correct) on the Galaxy S6?

Is it possible that ASUS will have a couple of handsets aimed at the high-end / premium market? Hmmmm... Somehow I can’t see ASUS taking on Samsung just yet but the ZenFone Zoom could be a hit with mobile phone photographers.

ACER
Acer reminds me a lot of Archos in that they keep coming ever so close to doing a good handset but trip at the third from last hurdle. Acer seems out of whack with the marketplace. They came so close with the Liquid S1 & 2 phablets but were sadly lacking. Acer just can’t seem to make a handset with enough power or feature a decent camera.

It’s not as though Acer can’t design it’s just that the hardware is very weak. Given that Acer is able to put out a decent tablet or two and are quite well known in the PC industry I am quite surprised that Acer don’t seem to understand the Android market.

Above: The Acer Liquid Jade. It looks like one of those concept renderings you see online and judging by the hardware I don't think it's up to much...

Here’s the Liquid Jade spec:-

MediaTek Quad-core 1.30 GHz
12.7 cm (5") (1280 x 700)
13 MP (Rear Camera), 2 MP (Front Camera)
1 GB RAM
8 GB

The Liquid Jade looks like a recent model and the spec is not up to par. What manufacturer does 1GB RAM these days? The 13MP camera could be good but like HTC I am envisioning grain and jerkiness on the video recordings. I am very curious about the pricing of the Liquid Jade; is it aimed at the lower end of the market?

In any event I can’t see Acer taking on Samsung.

THE GIFT OF 64-BIT
As I’ve stated previously, Apple has given Android the gift of 64-bit! Manufacturers now have the opportunity to create some great mobile devices. I think the Android marketplace will throw up a few surprises every now and again. All it takes is a decent design and strong hardware; this is where Samsung is consistent. Sure, you can argue that the Galaxy S5 was “safe” but you can’t say that it is not fast and does not feature a decent camera.

The Galaxy A series tells me that Samsung is still going to be hard to beat. And knowing Samsung it’ll try to release more handsets down the line to combat the competition which will be very intense this year. Who knows if Samsung might release premium handsets that feature Qualcomm chips in the future? I know that the Galaxy Note 4 hasn’t been out for long but you can bet that Samsung is already on the case with the Galaxy Note 5 and will it feature its own Exynos chip or Qualcomm?

There is one question still unanswered: Does Samsung have an answer to those inexpensive 64-bit handsets from ASUS, Archos and ZTE (in the States) for example?

Could the answer come in the form of Qualcomm chips? Would it be worth Samsung’s while to compete in the lower market? Wouldn’t it be in Samsung’s best interests to go even higher than the forthcoming Galaxy S6 and current Note 4 (in terms of the fastest possible processor and RAM) to redefine “premium”?

Jeez! From one question many more questions arise!

FOOLISH
It would be foolish to write Samsung off as there is still a lot of scope... ...I mean, Tizen could develop into an alternative that will still require the Google Play Store. Again, Tizen is a way for Samsung to develop its own technologies and innovations. I think of Tizen like a forked version of Android (but not) if you see what I mean.

Some say that the edge screen idea is desperate but that wasn’t the feeling when Samsung first showed off its YOUM flexible screen technology at CES 2013. Now that it has arrived some people are trying to discard it. The edge screen is great for the camera functions – what’s bad about a virtual shutter button?

We’ll just have to wait and see... February is taking its sweet time! Lol!
