resort to placing some of my handsets in the refrigerator? Oh, yes! This heat
as had my Galaxy S2 and HTC One X in meltdown so much so that I had to put them
in the freezer at my local supermarket and the refrigerator in my home! I found
that removing them from the protective casing did help somewhat! Gosh!
Hey, many of you thought that my idea for Facebook to pay us was a good one!

FACEBOOK SHOULD PAY

Good afternoon, Synapse Circuit Readers! It is thankfully a cooler day! And in
a bit I will be out taking photos on my Galaxy S4!
Twitter’s Biz Stone thinks that he has the answer to enable Facebook to bring
in $1 Billion per month. I think it is a crap idea! Ok, a monthly fee could
possibly work for professionals, the entertainment industry, online retail
outlets, etc but it won’t work for ordinary people.
FACEBOOK SHOULD PAY US The
best way for Facebook to generate revenue is to pay its users for clicking on
ads that are relevant to them. Better still, when users take up a special offer
they get a discount on their purchase.
By paying us to click on ads it will be a win / win situation:
1. The users gain a little revenue for their activities which can be used to
add to their purchases.
2. Advertisers will invest more into advertising on Facebook.
3. Finally, Mark Zuckerberg will have monetized the social network for life!
ALTERNATIVE Charging users for Facebook has been a persistent rumour from since I
created my profile back in 2007 and recently Zuckerberg tried to implement a
payment scheme for users writing to celebrities. I knew it was not going to
work! There are so many fake celebrity profiles! Lol!
At the moment Facebook encourages users to “promote” their status update which
is a stupid idea. Zuckerberg is not content to tell us how we should make our
friends but dictates to us on how many of our friends can see it. It is
annoying to say the least.
I’ve noticed that this does not make users abandon Facebook in droves. I don’t
see a revival of MySpace either. I migrated from MySpace because of all those
bloody restrictive rules! I have jumped into the fire from the frying pan by
settling on Facebook! Jeez!
I am trying Google Plus (G+) and it is not bad at all. I am finding my way
around.
PROMOTION
That word “promotion” is a funny word that can get some people all riled up for
nothing. As you know, I write about Tech and Social Networking, etc and some
people get upset with what they see as “spamming” by my posting links to my
articles in the appropriate discussion areas within Facebook Pages / Groups, Twitter
and Google Plus Communities. What I do is for non-profit but it has some people
throwing their toys out of the pram. However, these misguided folk think it is
a good idea to post rude and irrelevant comments and become a troll. These
sorts of people have caused Facebook to think about charging the likes of me
for wishing to share my writing. Honestly, I think people need to calm down.
People need to look up what “spam” actually means. People need to agree
universally as to what spam is because Zuckerberg changes the definition at
will and it has an adverse effect on people – it turns them into egotistical
maniacs! Raving freaking lunatics! And that’s not funny!
It’s not about money.
NO! It’s about social etiquette. Facebook and other social networks are
creating Social Network Sociopaths who become extremely nasty trolls and
cyberbullies.
Technology and social networking is producing Smart-Idiots; I’ve noticed that a
lot of tech-folk aren’t able to read articles that criticises our usage of mobile
phones and how secure we are. They just don’t get it. They are used to watching
videos of somebody opening a box or some tech review. They can’t seem to
understand any other context outside of tech reviews. It’s alarming.
Social etiquette should have Zuckerberg paying us for giving Facebook a revenue
stream. I think if people were paid it may create a more stable mentality of
its users. I think all social networking media should adopt paying users for
clicking on relevant ads and making discounted purchases.

MICROSOFT $1BN DOWN ON THE SURFACE

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! The fan is blazing on full blast and I
am still burning! Still, it’s a beautiful night!
Have you heard the news about Microsoft losing $1 Billion with the failure of
the Surface tablet and its shares have fallen by over $32 Billion!
STRANGE GAMBLE Yes,
what a strange gamble Microsoft placed on the Surface. Windows 8 RT????
Bizarre! Rather than playing to its strengths i.e. a tablet PC with a full
version of Windows 8 they tried to take on the iPad and the army of Android tablets
and without a great portfolio of apps! I would have thought that Microsoft
would have known better than to try and create an operating system for the ARM
chip when that horse has bolted from the stable. Personally, I think it makes
better sense to buy a decent laptop than to waste money on a Windows RT tablet
which is more expensive and for no justifiable reason. Ok, it does look
aesthetically pleasing plus the stand and keyboard are great ideas too!
Windows RT has more success on the mobile phone but not much in comparison to
Android and iOS.
TABLET PC If you have been following the history of technology you’d know that the
tablet computer is nothing new and that Microsoft had created one when Bill
Gates was knocking around but at the time the tablet PC was too costly to
produce. They were on the right track but did not follow through! What a shame!
All those billions of dollars would have been better spent on mass producing a
tablet PC thus bringing the costs down. December last year I visited a
technology exhibition and came across the HP stand; I had a play with a nice
looking tablet PC with the full blown Windows 8 OpSys and thought it was quite
good. I thought the build was pretty solid. But I almost passed out when I was
told the price! I think it was something in the region of £799! Gosh! For that
money I’m better off with the good old fashioned desktop and a Google Nexus!
I am also surprised that Microsoft didn’t come up with the idea for a hybrid full
Windows 8 and Android tablet thus combining the best of both worlds!
It remains to be seen if there’s a market for the full blown Windows 8 tablet
experience let alone hybrid models such as the forthcoming Samsung ATIV Q. But
I fear the price tag for these things will put it out of reach for most people.
I can see shares falling some more!

Good afternoon, Synapse Circuit Readers! It’s another scorching day! I feel
like a baked potato!
About last night...
POPULATION EXPERIMENTATION Last
night / early morning, I decided to write an experimental piece to gauge the
effect of Project PRISM has left upon us, the level of concern / paranoia and
raise discussions.
The piece was also based upon some out there conspiracy theories doing the
rounds on the Internet that have filtered down to people offline – a Neurological
Network if you will. Once in a while I get approached by strangers who inform
me of the elusive shadow world of the... ...wait for it... ...yes, the
Illuminati and proceed to warn me of the dangers of mobile phones and joining
social networks and how our information is being used to keep a watchful eye on
us. Maybe I have a sympathetic demeanour why I get approached a lot and
thankfully not so much of late
I am reminded of the era of J. Edgar Hoover and how the telephone conversations
of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were listened in on. Then there are the
stories of undercover agents infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan, Black Panthers, the Hippies and
other seemingly radical group formations. Today there are many documentaries on the
Discovery channel that asks questions surrounding the deaths of US President
John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy. Oddly, there aren't
documentaries on the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King or Malcolm X... Too
radical? Perhaps! But I have noticed that in almost every era there’s some kind
of awareness of some conspiracy or another. In the 70s we had some theories
surrounding the death of Karen Silkwood; the same things occurred: phone taps, death threats. And subsequently theories abound surrounding her fatal car crash. Skip forward to the
80s in the UK where (mostly) women set up a camp in RAF Greenham Common to
protest against nuclear weapons; many women have said that they had their
phones tapped and that they were spied on. The police were allegedly driving
around in vans and taking pictures of the protestors presumably to create profiles. Fast
forward to the present day in the UK where undercover policemen have been outed
and have caused grave concern over using the identities of dead babies to assume a
watertight alibi. And, of course, Project PRISM has recently come to light.
I have wondered to myself, ‘Are people unconsciously embellishing these ideas
by putting their own enthusiastic and imaginative spin on them?’ You know how
it is, right? Someone tells someone else a story and that someone else tells it
to another and adds his or her own flavour. It is what the media does – except that
it wilfully paints a false picture so that lies and truth are indistinguishable.
Yet some of us feel compelled to buy into it. It’s almost unavoidable. For
example I rarely buy newspapers but while I am shopping in my local supermarket
I can’t resist seeing what crap is being told in some of the tabloids. Crap,
but entertaining crap – sometimes!
It is interesting how technology has helped to spread the word around the world
in minutes!
PHONE HACKING / IDENTITY THEFT
Recently in the UK we have also seen Phone Hacking by journalists looking to
get the most up to the minute scoop on anybody they deem newsworthy,
celebrities, the royal family, politicians, etc. I find it amazing as to how
far these so called journalists will go to find a story. So, now the idea of
spying on people has moved away from a shadow police / government and with the
right equipment just about everybody can get into espionage.
I have seen many scare articles on the subject of hackers being able to hack
into any mobile phone and remotely activate the microphone whereby the
hacker is able to record audio from that handset without the owner knowing. The
hacker is said to be able to use the camera to not only take pictures but to
see remotely too.
It this makes me wonder as to how safe is our privacy when we use these
wonderful gadgets. It follows that if we are able to set-up an application to retrieve
our stolen handsets that can remotely record the audio and even take a snapshot
of the thief then it is possible for a hacker to get into our phones without us
knowing. And if a hacker can do it then so must intelligence agencies. The
situation reminds me of the US TV series starring Jim ‘Jesus’ Caviezel called ‘Person
of Interest’ whereby a computer genius invents a grand super-snooper-computer
to pick out bits of conversation emanating from any mobile phone, CCTV and
basically any electronic device with an audio / visual feed. There are echoes
of Project PRISM there. However, the ‘Person of Interest’ always manages to
foil the bad guy unlike Project PRISM... I mean, the tragic Boston bombings
weren't foiled.
Then there are the horrendous stories of identity theft! Unsuspecting folk
suddenly find themselves with a massive credit card bill and in some cases
individuals are being set-up in character assassinations. How many times have we
heard innocent people being falsely imprisoned or even killed through a
manipulation of ID?
PARANOID?
Should I be? Should you be? Going back to this ‘shadow group of people’ this
idea has now permeated the media... It’s usually a bunch of extremely wealthy
people who have conspired together to become untouchable, with impunity to do
as they deem fit. In Batman Begins it’s the League of Shadows; Smallville (TV
series based on the formative years of Superman) it’s the Gravitas Group and in
the (underrated) Watchmen movie a lone rogue former masked adventurer (superhero)
heads a company called Pyramid. And we know that the Freemason’s is the worst
kept secret in the world. I ask, ‘Is it our imagination of what we think
Freemasonry is about because we don't really know any wiser or are the ideas
based upon reality?’
Again, lately the media has paid a lot of attention to these ideas and the
documentaries – if you can call them that – seem to play into our fears /
suspicion rather than to answer questions in any real depth. I guess we do love
a good mystery. And I guess our love of mystery plays to a part in our brain
that allows the mystery to be sustained.
Of course there are many who dismiss the idea of this secret society outright.
Some of the stories on the web are so outlandish it makes me wonder some more
as to if the people putting those ideas out there are just trying – with some
success – to make others believe the absurd. By now with these wonderful handsets featuring full
HD video cameras in their millions should be able to capture shape shifting humanoid
aliens, a clear alien spacecraft and other supernatural activities that are
said to be “happening everyday” that many are unaware of. But the flipside of
the coin is the recent outing of UK celebrity child abusers in the form of
Jimmy Savile, Stuart Hall and the alleged soap opera star, William Roach. For
years there were rumours about these men abusing young girls & boys that weren’t
taken seriously until now. God (another popular rumour) only knows the secrets
that Savile has taken with him to the grave.

00:45 and I’m writing this short article now, Google Now...
DO YOU TRUST IT? Yes,
it’s regarding Google Now being on 24 / 7; do you trust it? The mic is
constantly on? Hmmmm... I don’t know about that what with project PRISM – the all
Seeing Eye ‘n’ all that. Oooh, I’ll have a side of New World Order to go. Thank
you! Oh, I’ll have fries to go with that! Super-size me!
I grew up in a very religious family and I tell ya, “The silent listener at
every meal...” And now Google wants a piece of the action? Sheesh! It makes you
wonder, right?
Check out the iPhone’s Siri; I am sure you are aware that “Siri” is “Iris”
backwards. I wonder if the mic is open 24 / 7. I am so not convinced that Apple
didn’t know about intelligence agencies snooping on its users. Yes, of
course... ...Retina display! I bet you that the front-facing camera watches
you, has taken your pic, added it to your very own dossier and you’re in a
massive database! It’s the same with Google too! They will continue to deny it
because how can they admit such a breach of privacy.
May I remind of what Google Chairman said about privacy, “If you’re doing
something that you shouldn’t be doing it then you shouldn’t be doing it.”
I’ve got nothing to hide! But still, I do like my privacy.
MOTO X / ANDROID 4.3
Despite the above I do love the idea of controlling my handset without touching
it! If it works anything like it does in that Canadian Rogers “leak” I am all
for it!
But what’s with that wrist action to launch the camera???? I can’t do that in
public just in case some guy thinks I am insulting him! Can’t I just tell it
that I want to take a picture?
If Google’s Sundar Pichai announces that the mic would be open 24 / 7 with
Android 4.3 on the 24th of this month would you be happy? Would you
be happy if you had no option to turn it off? Hmmmm...

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! What a heatwave! This is the hottest
July on record! I guess this is a great time to for Google’s Sundar Pichai to
invite us to breakfast to talk product – I hope!
WHAT TO EXPECT Ok,
so Android 4.3 is not going to be a game changing update, but I expect that the
there’ll be a continuation of the butter effect. I am also expecting that
notifications will come as cards to enhance the Google Now app. Perhaps the
cards will get a makeover too! But will 4.3 see the introduction of the open
mic that is a main feature of Moto X?
MOTO X
I expect we’ll be hearing about Moto X as it is expected to reach the markets
by August. I guess you’ve read my articles on Moto X so no need to wax on some
more. I am curious though as to if there will be different versions like the
RAZR series.
NEXUS 7 2ND GENERATION
Yes, I have promised myself that this will be the year that I get a tablet! It could
very well be that the second generation Nexus 7 could be the one! There again,
the second generation Nexus 10 could also be the one! Lol!
LOW KEY?
I have to say that the event seems low key... Very subdued... Hmmmm, Google had
rotten luck last year with the freak weather in New York but c’mon, Google!
Push the boat out! At the time of writing there was no disclosure of where the
event is taking place other than somewhere in San Francisco. I guess Google don’t
want to tempt fate!

Good evening, Synapse Circuit Readers! Mmmmm... Nothing like a tub of ice cream
on a hot night such as this! Chocolate ice cream... My favourite! Speaking of
sweet things...
ANDROID: JUST DESSERTS? I’ve
been reading a lot lately about how manufacturers should leave Android pure and
direct functionality towards apps. I even wrote something along those lines a
few months back and now I am not so sure...
For a the last two Saturday’s in a row I’ve been out taking photos with my
Androids, Galaxy S4 and my recently acquired HTC One X. I can’t say that I am
too impressed with the HTC One X results – oh, I have rooted it and installed
Cyanogenmod. As I have always maintained with HTC handsets, the camera is not
up to much. The pictures are grainy and the video is often jerky. Anyhoo, this
is one of the reasons why I have chosen to go with Samsung handsets.
And last Saturday it became very apparent as why I have come to appreciate the
camera application on the S4 and TouchWiz. TouchWiz Nature UX 2.0 to be
precise. In comparison to TouchWiz 4.0, Nature UX 2.0 has come such a long way
that I can’t see myself ever installing a custom ROM. On my Galaxy S2 I felt
that TouchWiz 4.0 was getting in the way and it was very necessary to root and
Cyanogenmod it! The S2 still works remarkably well considering... ....so, what
I am trying to say? Yes, it’s that hot! I can hardly function! Lol! Ok, ok...
What I am trying to say is that Android has always been able to access a good
camera and moreover take great snaps too! I am waiting for a Google Galaxy S4
to prove that, barring the special effects as part of the standard S4, you’ll
be able to get more or less the same results. In other words, a bad camera is a
bad camera. And when you have a top notch, in my opinion, camera that is the
Galaxy S4 I don’t want to use any other camera application other than what is
there! Therefore, I am no longer subscribing to the “Vanilla Android is best”
idea. But I do understand the purist’s point of view at the same time. I am
practically running Vanilla Android on my One X and I prefer it to Sense.
THE SOLUTION
Google... The solution is down to Google to provide either a built-in camera
app as part of the Android operating system – I am not sure how that would
work... But just like Google have apps for many functions I think it is about
time they did a camera app, Google Eyes! Google Eyes would be one sweet camera
on par with Samsung and / or your favourite manufacturer camera app.
Google are already
working on making Android faster. But I can’t say that I have noticed a lag nowadays.
Jelly Bean is a massive leap forward as you may know... There again, I still
read about “lags” and I can’t say that I have experienced this with the premium
handsets. The only time I have experienced lag is with those budget handsets
that can’t deal with CPU intensive apps.
I think that manufacturers should, like Google, keep improving their overlays!
There are only a few things I would change with TouchWiz and the one that’s on
the top of my head is to make the UI adapt to landscape; that is long overdue
with TouchWiz! Oh, and to create folders by simply dropping an icon on top of
another.
I was thinking about asking Samsung to turn TouchWiz into a launcher but I
think that stop Samsung being Samsung and respectively Sense on HTC and so on
and so forth.
Next up is the hardware! It seems that these quad-core beasts are good for
driving the UI overlays because if you take the Motorola RAZRi with its
single-core Intel 2GHz CPU it chugs along without any real lag. I think this is
because the RAZRi runs near pure Android as the hardware does not warrant
special UI tweaks.
It’s horses for courses! It’s what makes Android a unique experience and what
drives manufacturers to innovate with what the operating system can do.
Oh, I would want stock Vanilla Android’s interface to infinitely scroll the
home screens! It’s a little annoying that I can’t go from screen 7 to 1 by
swiping left and vice versa.
ARGUMENTS / DISCUSSION
Whatever... I was having a discussion with a Nokia Window 8 Fanboy regarding
Nokia going Android and basically he told me that it is a bad thing for Android
to dominate the world. And then he asked me if I work for Google! Lol!
The point I am making is that Android is so malleable that you can pretty much
do what you want with it! So, why can’t Nokia do something with it? Today, a
phone isn’t just a phone... It’s what the phone can do! But there is a reason
why Android is dominating at the moment and if it could save Nokia from going
under then why not?
It’s like with BlackBerry... They want to do their own thing yet want to
utilize Android apps in a bid to save their bacon. Can they have it both ways?
We’ll see...
There’s talk of Tizen, Firefox and Ubuntu operating systems. Bring ‘em on! Put
Android to the test!
